3 Hours CFI Flight Prep

Kenny Keller says commercial helicopter pilots prepping for their CFI checkride don't need much formal training if they're already sharp on flying and written knowledge. He runs a week-long course with three hours of flight prep and intensive ground teaching, and offers a limited discount on R22 and R44 training.

If you're a recent commercial pilot and you're working on CFI, you don't need a 5, 10, 15, 20 hour package necessarily that a lot of flight schools are going to sell you. If you've just recently finished up your commercial, your knowledge should be fresh. You've been flying for the cfi, you got to get your written done. The CFI has a high level of knowledge. It's not really about the flying, it's about the teaching and being a teacher and a good presenter. When I did my CFI, I did it 25 years ago in California, Accelerated course. That's exactly what they told us. They said, hey, you don't need this 20 hour package that some schools trying to sell you. When you come out here, it's going to be ground, teach and a little bit of flying. It's going to be three hours for the prep and that's all you're going to do. We are not going to do any more than three because that's all you need. If you are flying to commercial standards, the flying in the helicopter is going to be flying to a good commercial standard and talking. And you're also going to do full downs, but you're going to get that endorsement from your instructor so you don't have to demonstrate that to the examiner. So if you are at a commercial level flying to commercial standards, you need the prep to practice flying from the opposite seat, get the training for the full downs and learn to speak and talk with while you're flying to a good commercial standard. So we did it. Two of us together, both named Ken. We were K1 and K2 went to California and those guys finished us up. And it was an intensive week of ground training. Yes, CFI is a very high level of knowledge. So every day we'd go to the flight school and we would teach. Would you be up on the board taking turns teaching subjects to the instructors and to our partner? And that's all we did for a week. And it was like, study all day, go to your hotel room at night and just study your ass off every single night. And we did it in like seven days. So there's no reason to drag a CFI for CFI out for months, weeks. We have a gentleman that was just in his commercial recently, he wanted to get a CFI done. He's like, oh, but I think I want to get it done by May. And we're like, just get out here, what are you waiting on? He's even got his written test done for the cfi. It's like, you don't need a bunch of flying. Don't fall into that trap. Now, if you haven't flown in a long time, then you might need more than three hours. But this is for someone. If you're flying to a commercial standard and it's fresh, you can get it done. So reach out to us if you want a deal. We're doing our final approach courses. We've got a deal between now and the end of 225, 50% off on R44. You get the R44 for R22 price. Reach out to Heather at 574-767-1797. You can text or call that number.
