#43 Home Flight Simulators vs Actual Aircraft Student Training

Kenny Keller explains what home flight simulators actually teach pilot students. They build confidence and help with radio navigation and cross-country planning, but can't replace real aircraft because they lack motion and sensory feedback. Real flying teaches things no simulator can.

A member overnight asked me about using home simulators and if I thought they were beneficial or not. And I'm going to give you my answer to that question in just a minute. I opened my eyes this morning thinking about flight simulators and this coffee cup. So I'm Kenny Keller, creator, Helicopter Airline Ground School. I open my eyes usually thinking about the video that I'm going to make for you in the morning while I'm drinking coffee. Got a couple other things to cover real fast. Then when I get to the flight simulator question, we have a congratulations for Christopher, who used our commercial and CFI membership monthly to pass both of his ratings. Just told me how he just got through his ratings. He's all finished. How much? It was a big help, especially on the basics. And he wanted to know how to cancel his monthly. It's easy. Go into settings inside your membership, remove your credit card. If you sign up with PayPal, go on PayPal and end your subscription. So congratulations, Christopher. There's how you unsubscribe. So and then another member who said she's taking a break from flight training because she's a little low on money, which happens to a lot of us. She just got started, got some time under her belt, and now she wants to know if she can just study on her own versus paying an instructor 70 an hour. So, yes, of course you can. That's why we. That's why you are a member of Helicopter Airline Ground school. Johan showed up for his flight training and did his rating in three weeks because he was completely prepared with Helicopter online Ground School. I'll put that link down below for those of the. You. Those of you that haven't seen it. So, yes, by all means, home study with Helicopter Online Ground school. And she wanted to know what books she needed. She's a member in the beginning of Helicopter Online Ground School Private pilot. We go through what books you need. So she needs to go back. Go to the very beginning. First lesson, private pilot section. We cover what books you need to be studying at home. Good question, though, and I'm glad she sent it. So the coffee cup. My training in the beginning was really random. I did all kinds of crazy stuff. So I'm a multitasker. I can procrastinate, waste time and be unproductive all at the same time. I like the cup. That's kind of the way my training was in the beginning. Jumping around, going to different aircraft, different flight schools, trying to study. Failed my first check ride. I was a mess. I was a mess. That's why? Seven years later we have helicopter on land ground school so that you don't have to struggle like I did. Okay, so congratulations, Christopher. Yes, you can study at home. Use helicopter land ground school to learn pretty much everything you need to know. Walk into your flight school and dazzle them. When you walk in and you have this spectacular knowledge. No, you don't have to pay instructor 70 an hour to keep your ground school fresh while you're waiting to build up your flight training money. Use helicopter ln ground school. That's what's for. So back to the simulator question. This is a great question and I'm getting these a lot. I want to know down below what flight simulators you're using and how much have they helped you? My answer is going to be pretty quick. I did use flight simulators in the beginning. I just used simple Microsoft flight simulator and I had versions way back. It did help me with learning some cross country navigation. I used it to learn radio navigation. I used it for a lot of things in general just to kind of help my confidence. And it did help. And his specific question was, you know, no, I'm not trying to get around FAA regs. Do you, do you think that it's beneficial at home? Yes, to an extent. Personally, it'll never be as good as being in the aircraft, smelling the smell, feeling the vibrations, you know, the whole sensation. It's never going to be that good. And I know there's sophisticated flight simulators out there, but we're talking home flight simulators. Okay, People. Something that people can use at home. So I say, sure, it can help somewhat. A home simulator is never going to be like the real thing, but yes, it can help you. So I want to know because I used flight simulators, Microsoft flight simulator, many years ago, the last 10 years probably at least, or more. I have not been on any kind of a home flight simulator. So all I know is what I used back then. So for those of you who are into that now, I know a lot of people are. I see these videos all over YouTube. God, I'm sure there's so many of them out there, it would be silly for me to try to tell you which ones are good, which ones aren't, what people are using. That's what YouTube's for. That's why you're here and that's why we're doing these videos, so you can jump in, give us your feedback below on home flight simulators. Have they helped you? You know, how have you used them? What do you think you can Use some simulator time, some approved simulators to help you get through the ratings and save you a few hours on different ratings, particularly like the instrument rating. But I'm not going to go into that because now our audience is worldwide. So it depends on the country you're flying in. Just go to your regs and look it up and you can look and see what is and what is not approved for flight training devices that will help you actually work on your ratings and what is legal to use that you could actually log in your logbook. So I did that way back. I did some simulator time for my instrument rating. It was just an old simulator at a flight school I worked at years ago. But it, but it worked right in that even though it was an older simulator, it was approved for training. We had one of those at this flight school I used, we had one of those fly it simulators and that was basically just box in a trailer and a computer using Microsoft flight simulator. But that was years ago, right? And it was okay for some stuff because an instructor could jump in with you and program like upcoming weather or failures on the aircraft. So that stuff was good but you know, no motion, no real world part to it. So you know, again, it can benefit, can benefit you some. I'm not knocking them, I just don't have a lot of experience in the recent past. That's why I want your help. Jump in below. Tell us what simulators are cool, what people are using now, what tips and tricks you've used, have you used them to help you get some credit towards your rating. Again, we have a worldwide audience so let us know how you've been using it and what you do. So congratulations again, Christopher.
