#50 FIXED WING Commercial 35 Hours PIC for Helicopter add on

A short instructional YouTube monologue by Kenny Keller offering advice to fixed-wing commercial pilots considering a helicopter add-on. He explains that a helicopter commercial add-on requires about 35 hours PIC, discusses whether to pursue a private add-on first or go straight to commercial, recommends going through private ground materials to refresh basic VFR skills, and briefly addresses headset preferences and a 24-hour trial for his courses.

To Taz for winning that awesome award. We've bought a whole pile of books for you. We ship them to you, you just pay shipping. So I'll put that link down below as well. Commercial Pilot Add on this is a question we get all the time and I'm going to answer it. Pulled out the I'm at home so I don't have my far aim at home, but I do have the far aim on my iPhone. It's about 35 hours pic and helicopters to get the commercial add on. So the common question I get for commercial fixed wing people that want to add helicopter add on is should I do the private or should I go straight to the commercial? Simple answer that 35 hours pic. If you don't mind flying around by yourself for 35 hours, you can go straight to the commercial. And I've seen it many, many, many times over the years where a person comes in and their intention is to go ahead and just go straight to the commercial again from commercial fixed wing to commercial add on helicopter and they get flying and pretty soon they're like man, this is boring flying around by myself. So then they change their mind and they do the private add on first so that then they can take up their friends or family and build the rest of their pic time and then do the commercial. So it's really very simple if you're a fixed wing commercial pilot and you want to do the helicopter add on and when you're trying to decide do I just go to private or do I go straight to commercial add on depends on what you want to do during that 35 hours of pic time that you need for the commercial add on. So either you fly around by yourself for 35 hours after you get your dual training and you're proficient in the aircraft, or you do basically about the same training private and commercial very close in the checkrides with exception of tolerances. But as a commercial pilot you're going to already know that it really is up to you what you want to do. Whether you want to just go to private first, then you could take up friends and family while you're building that pic time or if you don't Mind flying around for 35 hours? Great. Go for it. So brings up another good question. I've been getting a lot of questions about add ons and of course we do, because probably over the years, half the people I've done checkrides for have been add ons. Okay, so another question is, well, if I doing the helicopter add on, should I go through your private first and then do the commercial material or should I just do the commercial membership? Go through the private first. The commercial membership includes the private. And here's what you're going to find over the years. Fixed wing guys, especially guys that do a lot of IFR stuff, their VFR skills kind of go to the wayside. Okay? Don't get frustrated with me. I'm not picking on you. I've just seen it over the years and I just had a question. Guy flying jets for 15 years wants to do his helicopter commercial add on and he's like, kenny, should I, should I go through the private. By all means, go through the private stuff so you can get the basic VFR stuff. Refresh your knowledge on all those things, VFR charts, VFR rules. Because again, as an IFR guy, you just get used to going out and filing IFR and doing your IFR stuff. And you can be, you know, of course, up in all the rigs and do what you need to do and you haven't flown VFR in a long time. They're very basic skills, but they, they do go to the wayside after a little bit of time of not using that skill. So I love all your questions. It's awesome. Keep bringing them, keep putting them down below. As far as the headset question, we. One of our viewers, Mark, has asked me several times about headsets. Man, they're getting crazy over there. I hope this is not too loud in the background. As far as headsets go, I use whatever. If it works and it's comfortable, I'm happy. There are a lot of you that are passionate about headsets, and I know that. So for the headset, passionate people put down below what you use, what you like, what you don't like. I have no real love for any one headset or any dislike for any one headset. If it works and it sounds okay and it's comfortable, I'm good with that. I have had one of the more expensive headsets and quite honestly, for me, I don't like having to carry batteries around or always remember to switch the batteries. You're in the middle of a flight, your batteries go dead. What a pain in the butt. So for me, give me a standard old set of headsets. If it's somewhat comfortable and it works okay and sounds good, I'm good to go. So make sure and comment below. Make sure you subscribe. Click the bell and put your comments down below. And while you're down there, there's a link for the 24 hour test flight. You can take all of our courses. Private, commercial, CFI, instrument, all for a 24 hour test drive. Either decide to keep the training or remove your credit card before the 24 hours is up. We depart as friends. You're welcome back anytime. Thanks for checking us out.
