#63 Are you teaching VUICHARD RECOVERY Method? Coffee With Kenny

Kenny Keller (Coffee With Kenny #63) describes attending a one-hour Vuichard Recovery Method class at Heli Expo given by Mr. Bouchard and Tim Tucker, explains why he now endorses learning and teaching the method after initial hesitation, and discusses industry uptake, terminology debates (vortex ring state vs power settling), training recommendations, and a promotional sale for Helicopter Ground School memberships.

Coffee cup sent in by a viewer for coffee with Kenny. I dedicate this to Mr. Bouchard and Tim Tucker at Robinson. So coffee number three is ready and I'm up early today. And one of my big takeaways from Heli Expo is the Bouchard recovery method. A lot of people have been asking me for a while and I totally get it. I attended a one hour class put on by both Mr. Bouchard and Tim Tucker. And after you spend an hour in the classroom and hear how and why this was developed and introduced, totally made me realize I need to jump on the bandwagon. And I know a lot of people have been teaching and doing this for a while from the people I talk to. Even Taz says he's teaching this all the time. I encourage you to attend a class with either one of those guys if possible. And in order to learn to maneuver, you're going to want to work with an instructor who is experienced at it. I wouldn't just go out on your own and try to learn how to do it by yourself. But the big takeaway is for me and they made it very clear, you know, the way we've been taught all these years is down, collective, forward, cyclic. But when you're down, then you're close to the ground and you're in with selling of power, there lies the problem, right? You're close to the ground. So because of that fact, that's why this was developed, introduced and why they're pushing it so hard. And it makes total sense to me now, of course I'm going to be totally transparent. I'm one of those guys that, well, we've always done it this way, right? And you get something ingrained in your head. This is the way we do it. This is the way we do it. And you teach it, you do it for years, but we also have to be willing to change when a new idea comes out. Okay. And they've been really working with this for almost 10 years. 2011. They talked about when they kind of really got started talking about this between the two and they became friends and Vouchard introduced to Tim Tucker and, and the story goes on and on and hopefully you'll see one of these. There's probably even maybe this is. Maybe it's filmed and out there and you can see it. But the point is when you hear the story of how it was introduced, I get it now. So I am going to start practicing it before I start teaching it because here's why I was hesitant before I became a Certified flight instructor. I was a law enforcement officer. And before I became the firearms instructor, I had to go to instructor development course. So not only did you learn through the instructor development course, and then I learned as a firearms instructor. When this, you know, shit hits the fan, you're gonna go back to the way you're trained. In my mind, when you first hear about something being introduced on a pretty important maneuver like this one, I go back to what they told us. They said, guys, you know, you practice all day with your handgun right here. That's a firearm. Fire your firing range all day long, right? So then you're off duty and you're carrying your gun over here. You're carrying it over here. And you walk in a liquor store and you see a guy robbing the place. Your hands going to go here first, the guy's going to notice that you just went like this, you know, Then what's going to happen? First your hand is going to go here, and then it's going to go searching for where the gun might be, where you may not normally carry it. With that thinking, I was a little reluctant to just jump on this new method and try it and teach it. So I didn't feel as though I should be really, until I experienced it myself and worked with it and practiced it. Didn't really want to introduce it into training or really even talk about it in videos. And of course, more and more people have been asking me, well, hey, Kenny, are you teaching this Richard recovery method? So I haven't been, but I'm going to now that I've been to the class and I learned a lot more about it, now I'm going to start doing it. So I highly recommend it. But they made the point and Bouchard made it, and he talked about, you know, sitting and practicing the maneuver mentally over and over and over and over. And I get that, right, so that you can break the. That method in your mind, right? So preparing mentally in training is great for all these things. We talk about armchair flying, sitting at home, you know, with the broomstick, and whatever else you can find to make your controls. That's the only reason I've been hesitant to really introduce it and talk about it a lot. But again, training is key, right? Knowledge is key. By entering a class or going to a class, it can change your mind through knowledge. The. The way it came about was really cool. My phone's in there dinging. I normally shut that darn thing off anyway, ruining my train of thought. The reason we went to the class was I got to interview Tim Tucker about helicopters. If you haven't seen that video yet, you should go back and watch it in the Coffee with Kenny series. But I'll put the link down below. Tim Tucker was good enough to talk to us and give his take on what helicopter you should train in. And you might be surprised by his answer, but. But we were all very impressed, and I was very glad to hear what he said. It's pretty awesome, so I highly recommend you do that. But when we started talking to Tim, he right away said, were you coming to the, you know, my Vouchard recovery class tomorrow at 4? And I'm like, absolutely, we'll be there. And Taz had already mentioned it. He already had wanted to go sitting down for an hour and learning and hearing how it's developed and the reasons why a person should know how to do it. A lot of instructors, this is the only thing they're teaching now. So it still kind of depends on where you're at in the world and who you're training with and what the examiners are looking for. Because the general consensus of what I heard, most examiners now are allowing you to use either method to get out of selling the power. Now you might run into an examiner who might be pushing one way or the other more. I don't know. So, again, this goes back to following the training methods that you are being taught by your instructor, the flight school, the area you're at. I just want to make the point that this is something that's now introduced and they're working really hard to get the whole industry to jump on board. And they talked about that, how pilots are like anybody else, right? They're resistant to change. And they're working really hard to put the message out there and explain why it's important to learn this method. Not only an alternative, but maybe the best choice for recovering with selling the power. And the other thing that cool that they talked about is, you know, there's this argument between selling the power and vortex ring state. And Tim talked about how there's two different sides of the military where they call it selling the power in one and power selling in the other. And so they go into that discussion and Taz Chrisman is going to cover that. We have a webinar coming up, and Taz is going to talk about the discussions of these different terminologies and how depending on what country you're flying in, you might hear different definitions. Not everybody's on board with what vortex ring state is selling, what power is power Settling, selling the power. A lot of debate over that. So not going to go into that because again, we have a webinar coming up where Taz is going to attack that. But they did talk about that and I find it pretty interesting. Hope you enjoyed the video. Be a lot of more, a lot of more, A lot more stuff, thoughts, things we learned at Heli Expo that we'll relay to you in videos coming up probably over the next week or probably in the next couple months because things are going to pop up and oh yeah, hey, let's talk about that. Or we learned this. We saw that biggest takeaway from Heli Expo was meeting the HOGS members. Taz kept saying that, right? I had a lot on my mind, like, hey, we want to talk to Robinson and we want to talk to Schweitzer. We want to talk to. You know. But Taz kept going back to meeting the members and Taz kept track of everybody. 22 Hogs members we met. And Taz took a picture of everybody's ID and put it in his phone so he could keep track of every single person that we met. So that was awesome. And hey, hopefully you've stayed to the end of this video. 40% off till March 15th. Crazy Kenny. So the discount is 40% off yearly or professional pilot memberships.
