#85 HELICOPTER PILOT | Add On week | Day 85 Coffee With Kenny

Kenny Keller, who created Helicopter Online Ground School, warns that examiners testing fixed-wing pilots for helicopter add-ons won't skip basic private-pilot topics. Expect questions on VFR fundamentals, weather, and airspace rules. Refresh your private-pilot knowledge before the checkride.

Hello, I'm Kenny Keller, the creator of Helicopter Online Ground School and I want to answer one of our member questions. And he said, I'm already a fixed wing pilot. When I take my helicopter checkride, are the weather questions that he's going to ask me, are they going to be the same as the questions I was asked during my fixed wing checkride? And my answer to him was yes. Whenever you're doing an add on checkride, don't go into that checkride expecting that you're going to get a break and that, okay, well I'm already a pilot, so maybe I don't have to know weather like I did for the other rating or maybe I don't have to know space as well. I can tell you in over 15 years of teaching and doing checkrides and probably half of those checkrides have been add on pilots. A lot of times add on pilots will go to a checkride and they're a little rusty on a lot of the VFR stuff. So just because you're already a rated pilot and you're going for an additional rating, don't think that the examiner is going to give you a break because.
You'Re already a pilot.
That's not the case. Majority of the time. Majority of time an examiner is going to want to make sure that your knowledge is still good and that you still know weather, you still know airspace, you still know what you can and can't do as a private pilot. They're gonna still ask you the same questions. And I can tell you almost every checker I've ever seen add ons as well. The first thing the examiner does pulls out a VFR chart and starts asking airspace. And I had one student many years ago, still a good friend of mine, and he was a pretty accomplished fixed wing pilot and he was really sharp. And we were doing ground school, you know, he kept going, well, I'm already a fisherman guy, I know that. And I'm like, well, I know you know that, but I just want to go over it with you because he may very well ask these questions. He's like, ah, just keep going. You know, I'm good, I'm good on that one. Well, the check ride day comes, he's really nervous and at one point he was really struggling. And the examiner came out and said, what's wrong with your boy in there? And I said, I don't know, I guess he's nervous. And he said, okay, he's really struggling. I'm giving him a minute to calm down. I want to go back in there.
So he ended up making it through.
And then this gentleman after the fact kind of scolds me and he says, I'm going to tell you this, I'm going to tell you one time only and we'll never say it to you again. When you're doing add on, pilots make sure they know their basic weather, their basic VFR stuff. And he kind of went through me, you know, giving me a hard time and I said, hey, you're the one that argued when we were going through the training and I kept telling you, you know, he's going to ask you basic private pilot stuff. Even though it's an add on, do not assume that they're just going to like, well he already knows this. So I'm not really going to go over it. You know, if you get an easy check r, you know, good for you. But don't count on it. Make sure that all your basic knowledge for the private pilot rating when you're doing an add on, make sure that it's all really good. So hope that video helps give us a like and a share. You can go to the description box below for a link to our website where you can go check out our helicopter align ground school. Find more about what we do and who we are.
Welcome to Day 85 copy with Kenny. I'm feeling a little bit better today. Thank you everybody. Yesterday for your get well wishes. I was under the weather. Feeling a little bit better today. Not a hundred percent but make it to my third copy. I know I feel better. I really appreciate the people that got in there and said they had, you know, got static from an instructor or somebody they worked for when they called in sick and I said good for you. Stand up for yourself. They'll get over it. Right. So today I want to talk about helicopter add ons. I thought, you know what, had a good idea this morning we're just going to make this next week for helicopter add ons. I'm going to say 50% of our members and 50% of the questions that come in probably are from fixed wing pilots working on their helicopter add on rating. And this week I do have a member coming in. So this member is a fixed wing pilot coming up to work on his add on. We haven't discussed it in length. I know he's coming up and I know he's flying up in his airplane. So I thought this would be a good week to do something every day on helicopter add ons. I just rolled a video on what you're going to need to know. I really like that video because that is a very common question and what I've watched over the years, the examiner is going to hit the basic stuff he is going to still ask you. So it is in your best interest even for the add on to go back through everything for the private pilot and refresh all that knowledge. And for the member coming in this week, I'm going to be 100% transparent here. I just jumped into helicopter land ground school and I checked his progress and he has watched almost every single video in private pilot and from what I can tell, the only ones he hasn't watched are some videos that I recently updated. Because when I update a video it shows in the progress that this person hasn't viewed it, right? So I'm thinking this gentleman has been through pretty much every single video with the exception of a few that I just updated that he just hadn't logged in to see yet. So I'm pretty sure that his knowledge is going to be good when he gets here. And that's what we like, that's what we want to do. You can pay me 50 an hour to sit here and teach you, teach all this stuff to you face to face. Why when you can go into private pilot membership for as little as $49 a month and you can watch these videos over and over and over again and the stuff that's gonna that I'm gonna tell you when we're doing one on one ground, it's the same thing you're gonna hear in helicopter land ground school. So when you come up to fly, saves you time, saves you money, whether you're coming to fly with us or whether you're going to fly anywhere in the country, whatever, wherever flight school you're going to. That's the beauty of helicopter and laying ground school. It helps cement your knowledge. Look for more helicopter oriented or helicopter add on oriented videos coming this week. Ground school members always give them their option whether they want to be on camera or not. Maybe this gentleman will, maybe he won't, but even if he doesn't, I'm sure each day there's going to be some good content that'll come up that I can relay things that I haven't talked about before in videos. As far as doing add ons, some stuff will be reviewed. Maybe I'll come up with some new things that I thought, oh, I've never talked about that before. So subscribe to the channel, click the bell so you be notified this week of our helicopter add on videos like I said. Each day will bring you some kind of content oriented to doing the helicopter add on. I am Kenny Keller, creator of Helicopter on Ground School, author of the Amazon number one bestseller Helicopter Checkride. Whoops. I am Helicopter Checkride but also top 10 checkride tips. This I did with Taz Christman. This is a good book whether you're fixed wing or helicopter because it's the basics of taking a checkride. We bought a whole pile of these books for you. We ship them to you for just shipping and handling. We got a big stack that we just purchased in the offices. Heather ships those out to you. You just pay shipping and handling. So I'm going to put a link down below for that along with the helicopter online ground school link where you can take our test drive. You can test drive the private pilot membership for 24 hours on the monthly or yearly option. Decide to keep it or if it's not right for you, remove your credit card from within the Helicopter Land Ground School site before the 24 hours is up or end your subscription and PayPal. We part as friends. You're welcome back anytime. If you want to keep the training, keep it as long as you like. You can keep it for 30 days, 60 days, 90 days. You can take a break, leave for a little while, come back. We have more and more people that are doing that and we have a lot of people that are doing the private take a break for a few months when they want the commercial, they come back and join the commercial for a few months and the commercial includes the private. So you can go back and review private, all the private stuff, then view the commercial. Same thing with cfi. I've watched this happen. Member joins monthly, does their private takes a break, you see them come back six months or a year later, they do the commercial, they take another break, and then you see them come back a few months again and join the CFI membership. That's what the beauty is. You can use the training at your leisure. Log home eating, you know, cereal in your pajamas and be watching videos. Or like our star student Johan, driving the tractor, listening to the audio all day, just letting the videos play and listening to the audio from the video over and over and over again.
It's a great way to learn.
It's a great way to supplement your training regardless of where you're flying or who you're flying with doesn't mean you have bad instruction. It just means you want the additional training, something you can use use and log in on your own. $49 a month. It's a great deal. Seven years long, seven years online. We've proved what it can do and it's been absolutely amazing. So thanks again for joining for day 85. Tomorrow will be day 86. We'll keep you informed on the ground. School member weather looks pretty good. Not sure if he's going to come up Monday or Tuesday, but I told him all week is open other than one appointment. I have on Monday at 3, so should be doing helicopter add on stuff all week. So we'll do some videos for you, bring you some more great content. Do us a favor like and subscribe and we'll see you in day 86. It.
