Advanced Autorotation Course- 90 Degree Turns Part 2

In-flight transcript from an advanced helicopter autorotation training video (Advanced Autorotation Course — 90 Degree Turns Part 2) featuring instructor Chris coaching a student through hover checks, 270/360 pedal turns, quick-stop landings, extended autorotation entries, and simulated engine-out glide planning. The instructor emphasizes coordinated use of collective, cyclic and pedals, rotor RPM management (keeping RPM in the green, ~90 knots references for 44 profile), situational awareness (tail clearance, obstacles, traffic, wind shifts), and variation of airspeed to control glide/flare. Radio traffic and ATIS/weather snippets appear throughout, anchoring the exercises to a live airport environment.

Three Three two, one. Look at that. Now just hold this right here. Looking good. Yep, just hold it. Look at that. But hell, we may even make that. But yeah, look how far we. Yeah, that was good. Wow. That was pretty awesome. I bet that looked pretty cool from the road because we're hauling off. Yeah, we are on balls again. Good. Nice pickup. All right, tails clear my side on like a right pedal turn to the taxiway. If you want, we can use 3 6. We'll take, we'll take. We'll come up here to Bravo taxiway and we'll depart to the north. Okay. Got the tractor over there. So he's going to be. Yeah, he might be. We'll just come out here, we'll do a couple pedal turns. Okay. And then we'll do kind of a modified takeoff departure and we'll come around and we'll use three six. Okay. Warsaw traffic, go up to one eight one Mike. Bravo's taxiing from the north. Dangers, overweight taxiway. Bravo. I appreciate you coming up, Chris. Yeah, no problem, man. This is fun. I like doing this stuff. Yeah, yeah, this, you should be having fun here. No, really, no pressure. You check right stuff, you know, and kind of just today just kind of having some fun. Seeing some things maybe you haven't seen before. Practicing a little bit more. All right, tails clear on my side. You want to do just a 90 degree left or a right pedal? Actually do it. Do a 360 left pedal turn. Well, what would that be? A 270. Do a 270 left pedal turn. So we're lined up facing north that way. We're doing our hover check here. The power, I'm sure is the same as this morning. We're still at 24 Celsius. So we check that. All right, so what we'll do is we'll depart so we don't cross over. We'll do right traffic on this one. Okay. And we'll come in and just do a normal approach into 3 6. And we'll do two or three quick stops down the Runway and then we'll get at it. Okay. The only thing you got is tractor right there. So just kind of do a modified departure here maybe if you want to do a little bit of a max performance. Okay. Yeah, I like to do that. Get a little lower. Yep. Take advantage of all that down watch if you want. And we can pull what, 25.7. Okay, so just so nice and easy. Just slow pull. Just slowly. Keep pulling. Yep, keep pulling. There you go. Now a little forward yeah, now a little forward. Looking pretty kill. Traffic helicopter 181 Mike Bravo departing taxi Bravo via right. Traffic three six. Got some more tur down there? Sure. Are they better hiding during Thanksgiving? Go chase them suckers. All right. All right, so just give me a normal approach into 3 6. Then we'll do some quick stops now since we're fat, dumb and happy from lunch. There we go. Making sure we haven't forgot anything. All right, nice normal approach to the numbers. 36 for me. All right, much light Florida traffic. Skywagon turning downwind Runway seven in the traffic order. Just remember we're only 500 ago right now. So being this low, I would be particular of flying over buildings and all that. Just, you know, single engine aircraft. Always be. I much rather go on top of those trees than on top of Lowe's or Meyer or whatever. Come on around. All right, one car slice drop needles are matched up. Temps and pressure looks good. We still got plenty of fuel. We'll go landing light on just because we're coming in final. Looks good. All right, so we're at 300 right now. We're a little bit of ways out, so don't go any lower yet. Traffic helicopter 181 Mike Bravo. Right, base turn final three six for kind of hold this. And there's our 60. So looking good. Yep. So I kind of hold off just. Just a little bit more. Yeah, there we go. Yep. Now you can start your normal approach there. Nice and easy. All right, good. Now we're just going to do a couple quick stops. I'll tell you, you know, I'll say something about abort and then three, two, one, and then. Okay, so we might be fast, you might be slow, might be nice and gentle, might be more aggressive. I don't know. Okay. All right, so make sure everything's looking good. Yep. We don't need car beat right now, so we're looking good. All right, off we go. All right, we're going to board in 3, 2, 1. Yep, it's nice and easy. I just kind of feel like you're kind of almost slamming. You're not slamming it down, but I just feel like the. The down collective's just a little fast. Yeah, just nice and easy. Remember, as you're lowering your half cycling with that right pedal, they're all. All three controls coordinated together. Okay. All right, let's go again. Try that again. We're gonna board in three, two, one. There you go. There it is. Good. Let it start to settle. There we go. Good. All Right now this one's gonna be a little bit more aggressive and let you get a little bit of altitude just so we don't strike the tail. Okay. I like to see that nose come up, though. Okay. On this one. All right. All right. Just always be aware of that tail. You know, if we're close to the ground, then little ass cycling. But if we're, you know, if we're 20ft off the ground, then you can pull that nose up and really get into that. Okay. All right. All right. Everything's looking good. Using that 44 profile. Remember, they stay low until what, 45, 50, I think. Looking good. All right. As she starts to climb here. All right, we're gonna abort in 3, 2, 1. Nice potential. There you go. Yep. Stay on those pedals as she starts to settle. Now start forward. There it is. Good. Do you do one. Just swear I know where I'm not even close to. Let me come around real quick. Your controls. My controls just a little. So I could feel like I'm not even close to being too. Yeah. I mean, remember, we don't want to strike the tail hard, right. We. But we don't want to smack it. But we do have a guard there if we happen to brush it a little bit. Warsaw traffic. Go up to 181. Mike Broad was repositioning on 3, 6 for. Sam. All right, now hopefully it doesn't look like. Better climb up just a little bit. All right, we're gonna enter in three, two, one. Okay. Okay, we can now push forward. As I'm lifting. As she's settling. Now I'm pulling collective a little higher here. I'm not smacking, so I won't cross the threshold here. 3, 2, 1, down. Right. And about stop. Yeah. And that's. And now I'm slowly pulling as she's starting to settle. All right. Okay. All right. You want to do another one? You want to go. Can I try one? Yeah. Light up your aircraft here. You want me just get you around? Yeah, you circle around. So remember, when you. When you pull back on the. I'm going to give you the controls real quick. I have the controls. All right, you have all your. Just remember, it's not. It's not a yank back on the cyclic, and it's not. You're not throwing the clip collective down. It's just a nice gentle. And just bring that nose up. Kind of standing on its tail. Make sure. Just be aware of our height. And then as she starts to really slow down and she. And you feel like You've almost lost all that forward speed. Then push that cyclic forward to level the nose. And then as she says, starts to settle. Then you're slowly, smoothly pulling up on the click. Okay. Okay, I get a little more height here. Just play with that. Yeah. All right. And just remember, when leveling, don't yank up. Just nice and nice slow and smooth pull. Okay. All right. Get a little height here. All right, here we go. And three, two, one. Slow. And then. Yep. Then pull back. Just keep pulling back. There you go. And as she starts to slow down, push forward as she settles. There you go. And you can even let it start to settle a little bit more. Then bring it in. Yeah. Cool. You like it? Yeah. Yeah. Which. Hang on. I just want to hear what the winds are doing one more time. Automated weather observation. 1-750-Zulu weather. Wind 100 at 4. Visibility. So it's gone back to the east. So we'll come around. Let's take off. And we'll make left traffic, and we'll come around on nine. Come around on nine. Okay, makes sense. Go left, and then we'll come. So basically, it'll be a left base for nine. Okay. And what we're going to do, I'll explain when we go. Okay. Forsall traffic, hook up to one eight one Mike Bravo on the go. Three six. We're going to make left traffic into Runway four, nine or so. So what we're going to do is we're going to extend our glide this time. All right? So what happened is we either entered early or we lost the engine. And the only spot we have is way over there. You know what I mean? Okay, so what we're going to do is, for the. For the 44, it's 90 knots at 90 on the rotor RPM. All right? So you might hear that horn blaring a little bit, but we're going to be fast, right? Right. And we're going to have this at the bottom of the green. And so we'll do 1800 again, just so we have a little time to play with. So now really what you're going to do, depending on what our airspeed is when we enter, you may have to actually push the cyclic forward a little bit to get that 90. Okay. And now you got to. Now you got to rethink a little bit where, you know, now we're. We're used to downright aft, right. So now we got to be like, down. Right. Where do we need the speed? Oh, we may have to push forward. Okay. All right, so Come on around. We'll do an extended left. Base, Warsaw Traffic Helicopter 181Mike Bravo, be an extended left, base Niner in Warsaw. Still stay on this side of Walmart. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This altitude doesn't really matter, but when you're coming in, you're only 300 and you're making that Warsaw traffic copter 1815 Bravo left base turn final minor, Warsaw Bourbon traffic 759. We are 10. All right, so remember, we're at 70 now, so we're gonna have to push it forward. All right? So let's. Let's do it over the road first, see what happens. Okay. All right. You got control of everything. All right. All right. You're following me though. Yep. And just remember, we may have to check the clip collective to bring that rotor RPM down. All right? All right, here we go. Three, three, two, one. All right, now. Okay, so we've got it. There we go. So just push that forward. Raise collective just a hair. Bring that rotor RPM down. There you go. Look at that. Now just hold this right here. Looking good. Yep. Just hold it. Look at that with hell. We may even make that. That's looking good. Look how far we. Maybe lower just a little bit. All right, here comes treetop level. Little bit of a flare, a little bit more. Now we got a lot of speed to build off, right? All right, throttle's coming in. Okay, let it settle. And now start pushing forward. Not too bad for our first one. Oh, we kept that rotor RPM up there a little bit long, but I think that's because we're just trying to be nice and easy on bringing it down. But yeah, look how far we. Yeah, that was good. Good. Wow. That was pretty awesome. I bet that looked pretty cool from the road. Like we're. Cuz we're hauling out, man. We are on balls to get. All right, let's go around. We'll do it again, man. All right. So from the road, so it's. We. It is weird to pull more collective. Yes, it is a different feeling. And it. And I don't like hearing the horn, but I'm. I can hear the horn as long as I'm keeping an eye on it. Cuz remember, rotor RPM is life, Right. If he gets too low, we just fall out of the sky. So we got to keep it up. We just got to keep that scan going for traffic. Helicopter 181 Mike Bravo on the go. Niner right. Traffic. And it's, you know, being out there. The 90 were right. The horn's Going off, that's letting you know, hey, we need to fix this. Right, Right. But we also know that in the flare, it's going to come back, so. But we don't want to be down in the 80 area either with the horn going off. Okay. But yeah, remember at pulling 90 trying to get to our spot, we got to do one hell of a flare to get rid of that. That forward air speed. Right, right. But hell, for our first one, I thought that was pretty. I thought that worked out. Yeah, that's booking. Yeah, it is. Booking. Warsaw traffic helicopter one eight one mike Bravo right downwind niner, Warsaw. All right, so again, everything is as. I should have said it earlier, but everything is the same. You know, power recovery. Expect to go. Go to the ground in case we have to. That way it's not a surprise. In the grass. We'll stop the water bird above us. I think they went off to the north somewhere. Oh, okay. All right, we're gonna do the same thing. Where'd we enter? Did we enter the road? Yep. Yeah. I say we try that again. Try that again. I know it feels weird, so we need to bring collective up a little bit because we held that 90 a little bit or that middle of the green a little bit long. But I think that's because we were trying to just be comfortable of not pulling too much and bringing it down. Plus trying to. Plus pushing cyclic forward to build that air speed. Yeah, this is kind of like. It's a different feeling of like, oh, I'm putting selective down. Exactly. It's the opposite of what we're supposed to be doing right now. I gotta pull it. Yep. Come on around when you're ready. Wearing caution lights, drop temps and pressure. Looks good. Needles are matched. Plenty of fuel. Looks good. Now again, we're doing, you know, we're all of this today is. Is the, the, the parameters that we have for today. Right. So like, tomorrow it could be a 20 knot headwind. So that changes everything. Right. Or if we're cruising at 500 AGL instead of a thousand AGL, that changes everything. Right, right. Warsaw traffic helicopter 181 Mike Bravo short final niner, Warsaw. All right, same thing. You got all controls. Same thing. Controls wheels. All right, in three, two, one. Yep. Get. Yeah, Push that nose forward. There you go. And just come up just a little bit more on the collective. There you go. Speeds looking good. Looking good. Just kind of hold it nice. Look at that. We are getting it. Damn. All right, so here comes treetop level. Just a little bit of A flare. Oh, a little bit more. Now it's at Quick Stop. All right. Yeah. So we. We came up big time as that. As the rotor RPM built. It actually brought us up. Yeah. Let's go around. We'll go around again. And I had the collective down there. Yeah. So that. That's od. Yeah. So what's. Yeah, so that's. The things you got to think about, is we are getting it with low rotor rpm, but as soon as we start to flare, that rotor RPM is going to build. So we may even have to bring up the collective a little bit. So that's something we could try. Okay. Okay. And hopefully we don't balloon up. Oh, I. Yeah, that balloon fell. Yeah. That was kind of a. I was like, what the. All right, cool. Well, yeah. Why. We'll do it again. Yeah. That's fun getting it, though. Yeah. Then after this one, we will do. We will slow our air speed down. Okay. I wonder if we. So once we know that we're gonna make the spot, maybe we should start slowing down. Okay. And see what happens. That way, we can control rotor RPM a little bit. Okay. All right. Left, center, right. Clear. All right. One caution. Lights off. Needles match. Pressure good. Still plenty of fuel. All right. Car Good. War traffic. Helicopter 181, rock bravo. Right base. Turning final niner. War. Yeah. Now, look, that wind stop shifted again. Sure did. Now it's coming out of the northeast, if you want to believe that. Hell, I mean. All right, here we go. Yep. All right. Two, one. Good. That speed up. All right, so now slowly start to bring your speed back. Nice and easy. Yeah, this is looking good. It's looking much better now. Here comes your flare because we know we made our spot. Go half cyclic. Now she starts to settle. Roll throttle coming back in. Stay on those pedals. There you go. Other than the pedal thing, that wasn't too bad. So I think it's. Yeah. Once you know you're gonna make that spot, start bringing air speed. Bringing. All right, so now let's come around. And now we're going to enter late, or we realize that our spot that we need to make is pretty much not below us but right in front of us. So we will play with air speed now. Okay, so we'll. So we're slowing down. So we're going. Yeah, we. So what we. We normally between 60 and 70. We might bring it down to 40. We might bring it down to 30. We'll just see. I'll be with you. Still at 90 for the rotor RPM I like the Middle of the green on this one. Okay, okay. That. I just. I didn't. I wasn't getting enough pedal in there as I was pulling clutches. Yeah, see, that's the problem with doing power recoveries is you're bringing torque back, right? So you got to be on those pedals. Go ahead and bring your air speed. We'll try to save a little bit of time here. Let's try to do a climb here. Yeah, that's the problem with, with power recoveries is the torque's coming back, so you gotta be on top of your pedals. In real life, you don't have any torque coming back. Right. So. All right, go make your turn. We'll continue climb as we make our turn because these are going to be straight ins as well. Warsaw traffic, helicopter one eight one Mike Bravo right downwind niner Warsaw. So what we're going to do is we're going to be at cruise airspeed. We're going to enter late. Okay. To simulate that our spot is somewhat right in front of us. And now we got to slow us down. Now, tomorrow we'll do some other things that we could do, but I primarily like to just play with speed. I just think it's easier to deal with. Didn't mess around with S turns and all that stuff, correct? Yep. Marion traffic Skyhawk 2630.
