Kenny Keller explains AIRMETs, SIGMETs, and Convective SIGMETs for pilots. AIRMETs warn smaller aircraft of IFR and moderate turbulence. SIGMETs cover severe icing and turbulence for all aircraft. Convective SIGMETs alert to embedded thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hail 3/4 inch or larger.

I want to talk about airmets, sigmets and convective sigmets. Examiner's going to ask you about them. What are they? An airmet most generally is geared towards smaller aircraft. Not specifically just two, but geared for smaller aircraft. Things like IFR conditions, moderate turbulence, things of that nature. A sigmet is whether to a broader range of aircraft could be basically anybody and those are things such as severe icing, severe turbulence, things along that nature. Convective segment is bad weather, like really bad weather, embedded thunderstorms, tornadoes, a storm that has hell 3/4 of an inch or greater. So those are some quick breakdowns. But he is going to ask you about airmetric sigmet and convective sigmet. So spend a little time going over these, understanding the difference between the three.
