EP 29 Helicopter Pilot Networking & HOGS Professional Member Goes For A Flight

Kenny Keller and Seth talk with a HOGS member from Freedom Helicopters about instrument training in the R44 and G2, and his plan to get a double-I rating while building hours toward CFI. He flew an EC130 and fenestron and suggested HOGS expand its instrument and airspace videos.

Is this thing on?
Mm. Push, baby. Push, baby, Push.
Did you get that on camera? Yes.
Chris Hauser, HOGS guest instructor. Flying with one of our HOGS members today.
What am I supposed to say?
Whatever you want. Oh, introduce why he's here.
Well, this is Seth. He's from Freedom Helicopters down in Indianapolis. He's working on his instrument training in the R44. And due to some uncontrolled circumstances, he wanted to come up here and get an hour, hour and a half in the G2 under the foggles. And that's what we did today. So he's about ready to take his instrument checkride with Freedom Helicopters.
Awesome. And he gave us some good feedback. Make a bunch of noise in the mic here. My stomach ground too.
Oh, whatever.
So I appreciate him being here today. I'm glad I got to meet him because I really haven't had a lot of chance to see HOGS members, especially since there's no heli expo this year. And he gave me some great feedback on. He's been going through the instrument course and he's like, hey, those airspace videos could be updated. I'm like, well, hey, we've got brand new airspace. But they're not. Those airspace videos are in private. They're not in the instruments. We're like, well, hey, we'll make that update. And then there was something else.
Just more content in general, a little bit more details on most of the instrument videos were very brief and didn't go into very much detail. So just having more content.
And you've mentioned that you know that the instrument. That's one of the things that we want to work on is adding instrument videos to the instrument course.
Yes. And what's gonna happen. Yes. And what's fun about that is the instrument course videos. Our majority of them are done by Tan and Austin, who flew at Freedom Helicopters, same place you're flying, and was.
My private instructor for my private rating.
Right, so he was your private instructor, which is cool. Now he's in Vegas flying with Taz, our other HOGS Online instructor. Taz does some of the instrument videos, but Tannen, you know, he was a brand new CFI when he was making those videos. And so that course was built, you know, kind of in a hurry. And Tannen did the best he could remember.
Tannen was my double eye instructor. He was. Who wrote. Who endorsed me for my double eye.
Nice. See, I forgot that. So it's funny how, you know, this video could be, you know, how the. Such a small world the helicopter is and how Everybody's connected and why you probably shouldn't burn bridges and keep your contacts because just look here, between four of us, well, five of us including Taz, how we're all connected and then Freedom Helicopters too. I appreciate Freedom Helicopters because we, a lot of our HOGS members have or have flown or are currently flying at Freedom Helicopters. And I know I've never met Joe but we've communicated a lot over the years through email and a lot of the members have come from Freedom Helicopters. So we appreciate that. And I want to go down, I just mentioned him today. I want to get a hold of Joe and go down there, see if I can do some R22 videos at some point. I think that would be awesome if he'd be up to it. So.
Great Flight school. I love the flight school.
Tell us what's Freedom's got because we don't mind, you know, pimping the flight schools that are out there servicing the HOGS members. So let us know what goes on down at Freedom.
So right now they've got one R22 available and 144 that's pretty much always there and another one that's available when they need it. And so that's the instrument training is through the 44 we've got which I'm working on my getting my instrument instructor as soon as I can get my instrument rating. But they've got a couple instrument instructors down there that are kind of part time available. So they've got a little bit of a mix of instructors available.
Tell us about something that Chris and I had never heard of. And this is really cool what you're doing that we didn't even know that you could do. We never thought about it. I never thought about either. Tell them what you're doing as far as approaching your CFI and your double eye. You're doing something a little bit different.
Yeah. So while I'm still trying to get my 200 hours required for the SR73 for training in Robinsons for the regular CFI, I don't have the 200 hours yet. So I'm going to try to use the time while I'm still working on that to get my double I instrument instructor and I probably will end up with my instrument instructor before I get my cfi.
And that's really cool. And you spoke with the examiner. So you know this is something that can take place because you've already talked to him.
Yes. And he was perplexed. He'd never seen it done before. It doesn't sound like, but it was asking why, but did not indicate that it was impossible. He just asked why.
So see, that's really cool though. And I, and I, it's Matt. I know he writes a lot of articles and he's really well known examiner. And that's cool that he even had to kind of scratch his head a little bit, but then went, well, I guess you could do it. And I like what you're doing because it makes sense to get to that 200 hour mark that you got to have. Teaching the Robeson is perfect. So it's a little trick that most of us never even thought of how if you're nearing your 200 and you're not there yet, what you could do to help make use of your money.
For me, it's just probably mostly just going to be the training for it and actually taking a check. Right. I'm not sure if I'll ever end up having students before I get my cfi, but I'm flying for a rating. Might as well use that time for another rating. So that's not my plan at the moment.
By the time you're done, you do the double I and then do CFI and then you'll pretty much be at the 200 hour mark. Yep, it makes complete sense.
It doesn't sound like it makes sense, but it does make sense.
Well, we recently talked about how you learn something new every day and we got that conversation. I'm just like, see, there's always things that pop up that you've never heard of before. And just because you never thought of it doesn't mean that it wouldn't work. That's really, really cool. Well, how about wrapping up with what you thought of the Cadbury as another pilot who has been out there flying the clockwise counterclockwise. And I know I said I've changed my tune and we're going to do that in another video, but since we've had this conversation going, what'd you think of the cabaret? And what'd you think of the difference in the pedals?
The pedals really weren't that. Today was my first time ever in a clockwise as well as a fenestron. So there was, I think the fenestron was bigger of a difference than the clockwise for me just having how much power pedal to put in. But once you're in the air, left pedal brings the nose left, right pedal brings nose right. It's a helicopter at that point. I liked the first time experience with the glass panel. That was kind of fun. There's A lot of information in a very small window. So just trying to figure out what everything's meaning. So that was a little bit of an experience. The helicopter is fun to fly.
It is.
But when you're getting going from the 44 with the hydraulics that I've been flying mostly lately to not having hydraulics, it's a little bit of that strain, but just trying to get used to how much pressure it takes to move the collective. But other than that, it's just. It's another helicopter. They all fly differently. I didn't really notice that much with the opposite pedals.
Right. We had this discussion in the office today before they went flying the second time. And I went back to the story of when I was struggling as a student pilot working on my private. Struggling with the pedals and the. And the older instructor that came in, you know, the guy that comes in to give you your stage checks and stuff and said, kenny, just push the damn pedal. Just push the pedal. Put it where you put the nose where you need it. You're overthinking it. And it kind of plays into whether you're just learning or whether you're switching later on because you've been flying clockwise and then you're going counterclockwise or whatever. I personally made a big deal out of it when I didn't need to, so. Awesome. Well, thanks for jumping on camera with us today. Thanks for inviting me up. So I.
Thanks for flying with me.
Thanks.
To be here today and meeting a ground school member made the whole trip up here worth it. We might not even fly now because this weather looks a little iffy, but. And we still might. But either way, the whole trip was worth it just to meet you today. So thanks for jumping on camera with us.
No problem.
All right. I guess this is a YouTube video probably. So subscribe the channel, click the bell, become a member down below. Helicopterground.com. see you next video. Peace out. Hey, people.
You know, it works wonders on editing, too.
Well, You're a perfect. I mean.
Am I grabbing this?
Yeah, take that. Did you remember how to turn that off? Did you turn it off?
I did.
Why?
Okay, good. Because I was like, oh, man, that go dead in the middle of recording. Oh, but do you remember clear back from what?
Well, no, I just saw this power button. I just turned it.
Okay, well, that's made it pretty easy.
Oh.
I just thought I'm gonna get a little bit. Tell us about the EC130.
Oh, I don't know.
This is a130.
I don't know. We've got. Technically, we got three of these. We've got the 109 that goes to 109. Then we have a. An A star at, like, the Las Vegas tours, the Grand Canyon tours. Hawaii uses these aircraft. Real nice aircraft.
An update for the top 10 pet peeves. DP pet peeves. We're doing that next week at 1, by the way.
Next week.
And you're invited. Got it.
I'm invited.
He said, I want to make sure Chris is here.
Yes. Like today. A week from today.
Yeah. One o'. Clock.
One o'.
Clock.
So, you know, I'll put on the counter.
I got it.
Goodness. I know. Because you're.
You're.
Your people have been waiting for it. We keep saying that.
I told him we've been pimping it. He's got to do it. Yeah, that'd be awesome. So.
And this puppy, clockwise rotation, flies just like the G2. If you can fly a G2, you can fly this aircraft.
Which is a benefit now to people learning the G2.
Correct.
There's so many variables now on which way to go. It does help you be ready for your furtherance of your career. Yep. Okay, good. That's good.
Awesome.
Badass.
Kicking it.
Amazing.
