EP 47 "Instructors Ask Examiner What Should My Students Study?"

Kenny Keller, Chris Hauser, and DPE Randy Sharkey discuss what examiners wish students studied for rotorcraft checkrides. Sharkey says instructors often skip the Practical Test Standards entirely, and students frequently miss airspace questions on knowledge tests. He recommends using the PTS from day one of training.

All right, we're doing good.
We're down to number number seven.
Yeah, moving right along.
All right, here we go with the next examiner pet peeve. I'm Kenny Keller, creator helicopter online ground school Chris Hauser, Sweet curling with sweet aviation. Randy Sharkey, Sweet helic. Designate pilot examiner Randy, go ahead and give us your next top 10 pet peeve as a DPE.
G' day Chris. Welcome aboard the H130. As we continue to knock down this list today we are on one that starts out this way. My least favorite statement from the recommending instructors is what should I have my student study hardest for? It's no secret, it is the pts. Rotorcraft Hilt helicopters are still testing from the pts. Now there's going to be a day, Kenny, when we're going to transition to acs like our airplane folks are. But for right now it's still the pts. And if it's in there, then it's Fair game. So do that. What else can they study besides the pts? That would be the questions that they would have missed on their knowledge test. So let's say they missed three questions regarding airspace. There is a very high prob that you will be tested that day on airspace. As examiners, we have to incorporate those questions into our plan of action. So we're going to ask you those questions on topics that you missed in the knowledge test. So you're going to study for the oral look at the bts. And when you're there, make sure that your instructor covers the questions that you missed on the knowledge test.
From my practical experience teaching for 20 years and doing a lot of check rides and flying with a lot of people around the country, I cannot believe the amount of instructors that aren't using the pts. I can't believe the amount of students that aren't using the pts. I can't believe how it comes up over and over and over. I can understand why examiners would get, you know, annoyed with that question because it is, it's the freaking practical test standards, you know, and it's like, I mean, I'm passionate about it because I've seen it, I've heard it over and over and over. And every time I ask them, not every time. Let me, let me rephrase this. I'll say, somebody comes to fly, say, pull out your. We've been flying together for a while. Pull out your pts. They pull it out and it's crisp and clean. Like this crisp and clean book right here.
Right?
I know you haven't opened the damn thing. Okay, you should be working through the PTS as a student. Your instructor should be working through the PTS as your instructor. You two should be getting together as student instructor and working through that pts and not just the last day before your checkride. You should be looking at that thing all the way through your entire training and be thinking ahead, oh, am I, Did I make my point, Chris? Throw in something in there. Because I get so frustrated too, because it's like it's in the bts.
You know what, when I, when I get a new student, you know, sometimes they'll, they'll email me ahead of time or whatever or on from day one, they'll say, okay, well, what kind of reading material do I need? What do I need to buy? I said, you have to have the helicopter flying handbook and you have to have the pts. Rotorcraft Helicopter. Those are, those are the must. And then once we get through, you know, get into training a little bit more, they'll start talking about the check, right? Or whatever. And, and I'll say, listen, know this.
Book, in and out.
Know the pts, in and out. Go through this. If you can have an answer for everything they ask in this, you're going to do just fine. In the aeromedical section, when they say, what is spatial disorientation or what is, you know, inner ear problem or whatever, you know, if you have an answer for each one of those, you're going to be just fine. I said, this is your test. So I harp on it. And I do. Exactly. Probably because I got it from you. But I say the same thing. I said, if you buy this book and you don't open it once and the DPE sees that it's not absolutely, you're not going to do so well, you have to go through that book. You have to. And there's a lot of useful information. There's a lot of knowledge in that book. If you just read through it.
And good for you. People that use it, good for you. The instructors that. That are using it and teaching it because a lot of people are good for you. That's the way it should be. But don't be a dummy. The day to check riding. Oh, well, I didn't know that. Well, it was probably in the under something. Under pts. That's a good one. Okay, we'll wrap it up because I.
Could go on for another half an.
Hour on that one. So come back tomorrow for Randy's next pet pee.
