I will say the new way how you schedule the written exam sucks. From a ground school member. We're going to talk about the written test tonight and some of the things in and around the written test. A question that comes up a lot. I'm Kenny Keller, creator of Helicopter Online Ground School. Do us a favor and subscribe to this channel. Click the bell so you'll be notified of our weekly videos. Talk about all kinds of stuff. We answer a lot of questions from our Helicopter Online Ground School members. So many great questions and a lot of them we just do on YouTube because we would just make our site too big if we covered every single question, like inside the site. So this is a good place to do it. So we have this young man who just passed his written with 86% and he's excited and I want to tell you what he said. So this is someone who just took a written test. We're in 2020 now. Okay. Been a while since I've taken1. This Hogs member emailed me a few weeks ago and he was getting ready to take the written test. And I tell everybody the same thing. There's all kinds of things out there you can use, right? You're welcome to use anything you want. I told him as a HOGS member, I'd go through all the videos in the HOGS course because of course, anything's fair game on the written. And during the course, we point out things like, you'll see this on the written test, you'll see this on the written test. And we have written test practice inside Helicopter Land Ground School that you can use for free and take as many times as you want and you can score yourself. And you can also use that for FAA wings credit. So that's pretty cool. And when I honestly told him, I said if I was going to go for a written test today, I would not only use our training, but I would go through the ASA test prep manual just because I like ASA stuff, always have used it. I'm not endorsed by asa. I'm not endorsed by anybody, to be quite honest. I've just always liked ASA materials and especially for like studying. If you want to study with a hard cover book, the ASA breaks in two books. So you got the book with the questions and a book with the figures. So you can go through the questions and have the figure book open at the same time. Some people want to use an app or, you know, use video, whatever you want to use. You're welcome to use anything. But that was my advice to him and he Took it and he was excited and he sent me the email. And I'll tell you exactly what he said. And I'm going to tell you a little more about what he said about taking the written. He said you advised me to use the ASA commercial test prep and hogs. Well, you were correct. I took my commercial helicopter written exam and passed with 86% with hogs in the 2020 ASA Commercial Test Prep was all I needed. You saved me between 2 to $300 with your advice, so thank you. Awesome. Okay, so. So he's happy. He got the test done, got an 86%. He can, he has it done. He can move on. So any of you that are screwing around, dilly dally and getting the written done, get that thing done. The sooner the better. The sooner you can get that written test out of the way. Then you can focus on the flying and the aircraft and the duel and the one on one with your instructor. Or if you're going through hogs, whatever you're doing, get that written thing done. But what I opened with what he said was I will say the new way on how you schedule the written exam sucks. You can no longer call and schedule. Everything is done online, including payment. That's our world today, right? Everything's going online. So I'm not surprised, but I wanted to say thanks that he actually added his test results. Can't wait to get started. Again with the written out of the way. See right there. He can focus now. So you, if you're screwing around with that written man, focus on that thing, get it done, because then you can focus on the rest your training. Okay, so that was question number one. I got three others from ground school members or possible ground school members. Next guy's down in Florida and he's looking at going after the helicopter rating. And he asked me several of the basic questions that I already kind of talked about. He said, let me ask you, how much is the FAA written online? I don't know. Couldn't tell you. I haven't taken one in a long time and I haven't taken this recent one. But what difference does it make? You got to do it. It has to be done in the big scheme of what you're spending for your helicopter rating. The written test is, you know, dropping the bucket, right? I mean, it is what it is. You have to take it with the faa. You have to go to the FAA facility to take it. There's not, there's no two ways about it, right? This just has to be done. Second question, when I get past the written exam. How do I get documents to show that? My local flight school for flight training. Well, when you get the written test done, you're going to be able to take that in. Well, you'll take that written test in for your checkride. The day of your checkride, the flight school might want a copy of it, but they're going to provide you with the flight training. Flight schools have different ground training. Whether they do it all with you one on one, whether they let you study on your own, or whether you do combined effort, they're going to have to make sure that you are prepared for the oral in flight test. And of course they can help you with the written test and they can endorse you with the written test, which does come up quite a bit about do we endorse for the written at this time? We do not. You can take our written test practice and you can use it to get FAA wings credit, but we don't currently give a sign off for the written test. However, no matter where you're flying, your instructor can just give you a quick knowledge test, make sure you know what's going on, make sure you're prepared, and then your instructor can sign you off to go take the written test and he can even sign you off that you know you've used an approved home study course, blah blah, blah. Next question. We have a gentleman who is looking at flying helicopters, right. He wants to go after the rating and he is actually a tactical flight officer, so he's with an aviation unit on law enforcement. Aviation unit. He's wanting to work on getting his rating and he's been asking me several questions, but kind of along the lines of what our topic is today. I guess my more specific question is going through your ground school. I will get checked off on the knowledge side of things. Correct. Does your course offer the avenue of taking the required knowledge test, et cetera? When you're preparing for the helicopter license, you got a certain amount of flight training, certain amount of ground training. You'll have a written test that you have to do prior to solo that will be done at your flight school. The FAA written test, you have to go to an FAA test facility to take that. Now, our course helps you with the written test, the oral test and the flight test. We go through the pts, we talk about all the knowledge areas and we cover as many topics as possible. And in the private pilot alone, we have over 120 videos covering the scope of everything. So for his question, yes, we're helping you with all the ground knowledge so that when you're doing your flight training, no matter whether you go and he mentioned he might get to do some training with his pilot in command of the aviation unit because he's an instructor. If you can get some time with him and that's allowed by the department, that's great. And then you may have to go get some, you know, dual training on your own, but that's between you and your department on who's paying for what. But yes, we're helping you with all the knowledge test. So same thing. Someone's going to sign you off for solo, which will be whoever you're flying with the written test you have to, you have to practice for. You can use our practice inside our site. And again, I recommend the ASA manual. There's many other things that you can use, but it has to be done regardless. So, yes, to answer his question, we help you with all of the knowledge area so that you can focus on the flying. All right, then we got one more. Okay, this guy is, he said, I'm a fit and healthy young 52 years old, successful in business, awesome, wants to go after flight training. And his question is, I'm under the impression if you don't use it, you lose it. He got that from listening to one of our videos. In getting my pilot license to fly helicopters, would you say, look for an instructor's job to keep my skills up and remain sharp. So I'm flying on a regular basis or going up per month recreationally would be enough. If you're just going for private pilot, flying once a month would be great. I think the average person can do a pretty good job at keeping their skills up. Flying once a month, of course you'd like to fly more than that, but once a month would be pretty good. And I'm not saying you have to fly every month. There's people that might not fly for five or six months. It depends on your skill level. It depends on how much experience you have. Of course, the more you fly, the more current you will stay. But I do say if you don't use it, you're going to lose it. But I mean that in more of a long term scale, right? I mean, if you go a couple years without flying doesn't mean you forget how to fly. You can get back in and do it, but you're not going to feel confident and you're not going to feel super safe. The more you're flying, the better off you're going to be and the more comfortable you're going to be. So it really depends on any given person. You know, for recreation flying once a month, if you can do that, that would be great. Once you get your license, I think once a month would be great to help keep yourself current. Doesn't mean you can't go a little bit longer. The big thing would be keeping your knowledge fresh. And also, you know, you have to have your flight review every 24 months that you got to do. And anytime throughout the 24 months of flying, it never hurts to go jump in with an instructor even once you're rated, let's say you've been flying for a year on your own, schedule a flight with an instructor and go out and do some autos. We don't recommend people that are just private pilots going out and doing autos on their own. Some people that might own their aircraft, they might do that. And if that's what they choose, that's their prerogative. But most insurance companies look down on it. Most flight schools under rental policies aren't going to go out and do autos. They're just going to want you to go out and fly and have fun. So when I say if you don't lose it, you're going to use or if you don't use it, you're going to lose it, that's with any skill. But don't think just because you didn't fly for two months you forgot how to fly, because that's not the case in ems. I worked with a guy who was a Navy pilot and he never would say how many years he went without flying, but it was quite a long time. And it was long enough that he didn't know the new airspace. And this was about 10 years ago. So at that point he hadn't flown for probably 10 or 20 years. He had to freshen up his knowledge. But he was quite excited when they went out for an interview flight with the company that we were working for and he said, wow, the flying came back to him like right away, right? Which he probably had a couple thousand hours in the, in the Navy when he was a Navy pilot. But again, that's going to depend on one, any single individual. So there, that was kind of fun. It was kind of laid back. We get lots of questions and it's fun sometimes just to do them with the video because it's nice to put these out there because so many people have these same questions and I enjoy just flip turn on the camera and grabbing a mic and sitting down and going through them.
