Ground School First before any flying lessons?

Kenny Keller argues ground school before flight lessons saves money and hours. One student prepared extensively with his Helicopter Online Ground School before flying; Keller himself needed 88 hours because he skipped ground prep. Madisonville Community College now uses HOGS as core curriculum.

Ground school first before any flying lessons. Question mark. This is a great question. Comes up a lot. I'm Kenny Keller, creator of Helicopter Online Ground School. We're gonna get to that in a second. Down below. Free PDF top 10 checkride tips. Co authored this with Dan Taz Chrisman 2018 Flight Instructor of the Year. Good little book. Free PDF. Lots of nice tips in here. So I've changed my tune on this over the years. I used to say, yep, the fly, do, ground, fly do ground, fly do ground, do them both. Then we had members who started using hogs over the past 10 years, started going through hogs before they ever showed up for a flight lesson. We had one guy, Johan, Superstar hog story, shows up at a flight school in Florida and they evaluate his ground nodge and they're like, oh my God, he's done. And the one instructor's like, oh, there's no way. Let me evaluate this guy. Then that instructor emailed me and said, kenny, this kid walked in the door before ever flying a helicopter and his ground was basically done. And all he did was watch Hogg's videos over and over every day when he was farming, going up and down the road, up and down the roads in the farm or in the fields, watching Hogg's videos while he's listening, watching when he can, I guess, however, he did that safely. So that's one way. And then I just spent a few days down at Madisonville Community College in Kentucky. We are now officially their core curriculum for their ground training to complement their flight training at their college, part of their college course. We're very excited about that and what they do, they make the students go through a certain amount of ground training before they ever put them in the aircraft, just to make sure that they're committed and they're going to do what it takes and it helps them with their learning. The more knowledge you can get before you start flying can be very beneficial. Some things may not make total sense until you get a chance to get in the aircraft, but then you'll get in the aircraft and go, oh, I understand now. That makes a lot of sense. So ground skull first before any flying lessons, you certainly can. I also encourage you, if you're just thinking about it, there's nothing wrong with going to your local flight school and getting an introductory flight and go try it out. However you can do what's best for you. But you can certainly. And now I do kind of encourage go ahead and start learning before you start flying. Because I did it backwards. Took me 88 hours to get my private because what did I do? Flight lesson, flight lesson, flight lesson, flight lesson. Instructors always going, well we should do some ground. You want to go fly though? Yeah. Yeah, let's go fly. Well, who doesn't want to fly? Nobody wants to do ground. That instructor was awesome and he helped me get through my private and he's my friend to this day, but he didn't make me do do any ground school. He didn't make me read or learn anything. We just flew. So in turn it took me 88 hours to get my private because I did it backwards. So we highly encourage it. Alright, so we have a sale going through the end of summer again.
