HELICOPTER BEST KEPT SECRET: [ Master Every Maneuver Like A Professional ]

Kenny Keller and Heather teach helicopter approach technique: trim and stabilize at 300 feet above ground, line up with your landing spot, use collective to control angle and cyclic for speed, then lead into a hover. The setup matters more than you think.

All right, we're going to do another one.
Alrighty. Let me check that off. Yep, process done.
All right, Heather's checking another one off the list and our one for today is. And I've done this video a million times, but I'm going to do it again. What's the key to a good normal approach? It's the same as the good or is the key to a good auto or the key to a good slope. The key is a good setup. If you set these things up, these maneuvers up nice, they're going to be nice. If you set them up sloppy, they're going to be sloppy. We're training to a standard. People go, oh, well, real world, okay, we understand real world. But when you're training for your private pilot or any other rating, you're flying to a standard. So in this example, I'm going to line up from a normal approach down to the taxiway and I want to be 300 AGL. I want rate of descent and I want to be in trim when I start my approach. I want all that stuff cleaned up before I start to descend. So I'm descending right now to my 300 AGL. I'm going to line up with the Runway, get rid of any rate of descent that I have, and I want to be ready before I start the approach down. So I'm lining up with the taxiway and for me in this aircraft, it's the compass with my spot. It's the second taxiway intersection. And when that comes into view, I'm going to call that my normal approach. Then we're going to fly it down. So my collective controls to angle, cyclic controls my speed to look like I'm always approaching that spot at the same speed. So the approach started out nice. It's going to be nice as long as I control that angle, keep leading my speed up to bring me a hover by the end and we're good. So there you go. The tip is taking the time to set the maneuver up correctly. If you're sloppy on your setup and you enter it half ass, the whole maneuver is going to be half ass. I've seen it a million times.
So.
