Kenny Keller (YouTube) announces the FAA's 2019 Helicopter Flying Handbook update, highlighting the terminology change from "settling-with-power" to "Vortex Ring State" and the handbook's inclusion of the Richard recovery method alongside the standard recovery technique. He recommends that helicopter pilots obtain and read the 2019 edition (PDF or ordered copy) and notes the update appears on the FAA website.

Hey Kenny, with helicopter land ground school got something cool. A lot of, you know, some of you may not the new helicopter Flying Handbook is out. A lot of people are going to be happy and a lot of people are going to have to find something new to bitch about. Because now finally the helicopter flying handbook says 2019 Vortex Ring State, formerly referred to as selling with power, describes an aerodynamic condition, blah blah, blah. So there you go. So not only have they changed the terminology, a brief description of where the confusion came from, and they also have included the Richard recovery method along with the standard method that many of us have been taught over the years. So I think that is really actually pretty cool just because there were so many arguments and discussions and videos and you know, I've always felt like I had to defend the faa, right, because we were always teaching from a standard and teaching from FAA terminology. So I don't have to do that anymore. And so ground school members know that, yes, over time we will be going in and changing the videos, but there's a lot of content on the formerly called selling the power, now called Vortex Ringstate. I'm happy that it's now changed. The arguments can end well, I'm sure somebody will find something to argue about. But at least now the FAA has come along to adopt the terminology that most everyone else is using. So that's a good thing because that just makes it easier on all of us. So there you go. Pretty short topic. It is up on the FAA website. I just checked. You can go to faa.gov and you will see the 2019 edition with this cover. You can always download the PDF or you can order your newest copy. And I highly recommend any pilot working on a rating. Well, any helicopter pilot that plans to be current, I recommend getting the new Helicopter Flying Handbook read up, know the new terminology and Mr. Joseph T. Whatever the hell your last name is, that's short enough for you. Peace out. Subscribe the channel, click the bell. See you in the next video. Maybe, maybe not.
