Okay. Have a brand new knee board. Should look pretty much like this one. We're gonna, we're actually live today. We're gonna do some giveaways. We got a bunch of cool gear, go along with our holiday specials. This is Cyber Monday. The sale we got going on ends tomorrow night. But specifically today we're going to talk about knee boards and in cockpit organization. You know, we had this screw up.
A week or two ago now and.
If I would have been using my own tip, things we're going to talk about today in this video, I wouldn't have done $54,000 worth of, I'm not going to say damage, but that's the rough estimate now on the, on the inspection for doing our overspeed 54,000. That's without knowing more after everything's been inspected. Inspected. So non paid endorsement. Moagear.net this gentleman sent me two of these a while back. We gave one away recently. And then this is the one that I've been using. And this one specifically didn't have the strap on it. So we're going to give this away today along with one of these or this, this particular bag right here. And we're gonna give away the helicopter flying handbook. We have one that has kind of a crease in it. It's a brand new book but through shipping it had a crease. So we're gonna give that away again here in a bit. So I'm gonna roll you several videos and these are all gonna be videos that deal directly with getting yourself organized in the cockpit. And not just your kneeboard, but your iPad, your chart. Because you know, we had a recent problem on a checklight checkride this past summer when a gentleman going for private wasn't versed well with his backup chart to his iPad. So we're going to talk a little bit about that. So everything we're going to do today is about keeping yourself organized in the cockpit, understanding the importance of the checklist, going step by step. And I'll just show you here real quick. Here's what I like about this. And we're gonna go more in detail in a minute. But not only do we have the strap right here, another strap down here, I think that should say helicopterground.com maybe we'll work on that. But I'm gonna show you here shortly how if you're, especially if you're new or even if you're not brand new, but you're struggling in the cockpit with the checklist keeping on track, we're going to help you with that. So Heather's got a video queued up. So go ahead and roll that video, Heather, and we'll be back shortly to talk some more about gear and all kinds of fun stuff and do some giveaways. All right, we're gonna do a quick video on knee boards. Not sure if I've ever done this, and I've had quite a few people asking me recently at this time. Hogs has no paid endorsements. However, this person sent me this and I should try to go find the email. It was probably three years ago. Somebody sent me this, and the website is moagear.net so that's who it was sent. They said, hey, would you try this out and let us know? So I'll see if I can find the email. So for kneeboards, I used one as a student pilot. Found it very, very useful. So again, this is one that someone sent me. I'm sure there's all kinds that have been sent since. And I've had people tell me, you know, this one's great and that one's great, but this is what I have here to use. So you strap that thing on. Heather asked me if one leg's better than the other, and honestly, I can't really tell you. I've always had it on my left leg. That's just been my experience and what's worked out for me. And the first thing that comes to mind is where. Where a knee board helped me in the beginning was I can remember as a student getting lost on my startup checklist. And I remember one of the instructors kind of getting on me and going, hey, you need to go out and sit in the helicopter and go through it in practice while you're sitting there because you're spending money and it's taking a lot of time during a startup because you're losing your place and you're unsure of yourself. So that's one tip. I did do that. I did go out, sit in the helicopter with battery off and practice going through the pre flight.
So that did help.
And then the other thing that helped me was what I did. I don't remember somebody told me to do this, but I just started going, you know what, make this a little tighter. Here's what I would do, because as a student I was nervous, so I just go, seat belts, boom. Do that. Fuel shutoff valve, do that. And so I could just keep sliding my checklist up with my left hand as I completed the checklist. And I know for experienced people, they go, oh, yeah, wow, you're a dummy. You know what, it helped me in the beginning just because it's easy. If you're trying to do this handheld and you're doing stuff and you set the checklist down and you're back up.
And you go, okay, where was I?
Where was I? And you're bebopping around. So that helped me. Or anytime I've been in an aircraft where I'm not familiar with that specific aircraft, just been really nice and always helped me. Okay, so there's the first use. And then of course, you can put your charts in here. You got this handy dandy little strap here over the top, strap down, whatever you've got, and a little clip here so you can slide stuff in, whatever kind of notes you want to take.
With you, your chart, whatever.
And then this is cool because it has a spot for your iPad. So this you could just flip over, I guess, and lay it down. Or you could take the thing completely off, you know, put it in the back or somewhere out of the way. That's not going to cause your problems. And boom, there is your iPad on your kneeboard. And this is just a very simple little strap here, which I thought was really cool. You know, pretty basic, but I like simple and basic. So just put your straps around the corner like that and feels good. I think I'll tighten it up a little bit more. We're actually going to go fly here in a minute, take you for a little flight and see how, how it works when you're flying. And I could probably go a little tighter to make it more secure, but I feel pretty good about this. I'm going to put the top back on because even like today we'll just be going out in the pattern and bumming around. So I don't really need that iPad. So let's strap this dude back down. And again, just to see how it.
Works, I do think I want to.
Tighten this thing up just a little bit. All right. Because of course I just did a video yesterday about doors off flying, which I love to do. But there was that fatal accident we talked about where a knee board went off of a instructor that was in the left seat and it went into the tail rotor. So in this case, I'm sitting on the right hand side, pilot side, and we do have both doors off. But I feel good about this. I feel good. This is not going to come off. I'm going to keep track of it. I'm confident that's not going to fly out the left hand side of the aircraft. So now I do want to note that what I have always taught, which is the way I was taught, is during a hover, we don't take our hand off the collective. So this is a situation where you're going to want to get your knee board set, have everything fixed, ready to go. And then you could, at some point, once you're in flight, you're in stable flight. You could remove your hand from the collective, move a chart, whatever you got to do. As long as your collective is safe and it's not going to drop on you, Depending what aircraft you're flying, you may be able to put friction on. Maybe not different aircraft are different, but you'll figure out what your stable flight is. I would not recommend messing with this in a hover or ever taking your hand off the controls unless you have a rated pilot or instructor beside you who can take the controls for you, mess with your. With your knee board, and then get back to the controls.
All right, first thing I did, moved away from the hangar so I could do a hover check. Get stabilized. So the kneeboard as of right now, I do feel my fingers kind of brushing up against it right there beside the cyclic. But I'm going to move cyclic a little bit left. I can move my leg a little bit if I need to. I got an inch or two there between the knee board and the center part of the cyclic. Move back to the right. Warning. Caution lights are out. H is in the green. And I want to note we're doing a takeoff while I was in a hover. If I would have wanted to adjust something with that kneeboard, I would have sat down, rolled, throttle down.
Got it.
You locked the collective, taking the precautions. I wasn't gonna mess with the kneeboard during a hover. Just not good practice.
Okay.
Now that I'm up and what I'll say is stabilized flight, almost 500ft AGL. Got some nice, big open areas below us. My hand I can take off the collective. I feel good about taking it off up here again.
500 AGL.
I got 60 on my airspeed.
I can increase that a little bit.
And this collective just sits nice right where it's at, not jumping up or down. So I could, at this point, if I needed to adjust something with the kneeboard, I could do it. Like if I was turning over a piece of paper. I can operate this. I wouldn't want to get too crazy trying to adjust it right now. I think if I wanted to adjust something differently, I would land and do that. Just because I haven't given Heather A for real lesson yet. So not quite ready for her to grab the controls. All in all, doesn't appear to be hindering my movement. Okay, so now that I'm on the ground, I'm rethinking what I just said. When I was coming in on approach, I did feel myself kind of clunking between the cyclic in here and a person could probably get kind of used to it, but just didn't feel super handy. I think the one I originally had was a little bit narrower than this. So I think I'm going to investigate and see this one for this specific size. Just feels a little bit bulky to me. Again, this was sent to me for free. I thought let's go out and give it a try.
Okay.
So what I just did, I exposed more of my white leg and slid this thing farther up on my leg.
So we'll try that. That feels better.
Because at least I'm not going to be. If my leg goes this way, I'm not going to be clinking it into the cyclic. It still might be kind of hitting my hand here. But we're going to go give it a try just to see actually in flight how it feels. Alright, so now I'm up. I picked up into a hover after readjusting. So let's do a hovering turn here and we'll just see. If you were dealing with turbulence, this would be something to think about. We just brought this back five hours from Tennessee and we had some pretty good wind coming over top of some of the mountains. And I do have to wonder about how uncomfortable I'd be if I was getting beat around with a lot of wind, how uncomfortable this thing would be. However, right now, for these intents purposes, not too bad. So let's go around the pattern again. Warning caution lights are out, gauges green. Here we go. Alright, so now we're on a takeoff. Feels pretty good in this position. Don't think I mind it too much. We'll go around, shoot an approach, see if we get a little bit of.
A little bit of wind and get.
Scrolling around a little more here and see how it feels on the approach.
Oh yeah.
We're trying out a new camera on our strut today so when we land we'll get to have a chance to check out that footage, see how that's coming out. Should be good. My idea is that you'll be able to get a better idea in some of these training videos of what's going.
On with the aircraft. Be able to see it parallel with.
The earth alright, so now we're going in for a landing. Feels much better now I would just say I might investigate a little bit now that I'm on the subject. I know people have asked us about kneeboards so I might investigate, see if I can't find one. Just a little bit narrower. I would be happier. So not gonna say I'm unhappy. It just feels just a little bit bulky to me.
All right. In the video we just showed you, I went in depth a little bit, but I'm gonna go just a little deeper in debt. And here's the, here's the cyclic from the 480 that blew apart on me. The instrument 480. They ejected me and threw me out in a ramp. So you know, learn from what screw ups I've had. So we just showed you this in a video. So to further a little bit more in depth with this particular knee board, the one that I just opened, you just saw me. I like that it has this strap added here now because here's what you can do. And think about this. I'm sitting here on the couch because the helicopters in Tennessee being tore to pieces, right? Because I screwed up. New student, third lesson. He's in. We didn't have an E board. We weren't doing this. We even discussed this before we went to fly. And I go, I should go back in there and get it. He goes, ah, let's just do it on the next flight. During the startup. He's a tall individual, long legs and stuff. But he kept going. Okay, checklist here, checklist here. You know, it was like. And then every time he'd go back to the checklist he'd be down here and they'd go back here, then he would jump down here. So we're already struggling. So as I already mentioned in the video we rolled for you, here's what I did as a student and I like this now because we have this clear strap right here. And now we have this added unit. This helps keep it nice and smooth. So in the beginning I would recommend this. You're in there, okay. Doesn't matter what helicopter you're flying. You know, if you have a standard cycle like this, maybe it has a trim and you could take your hand off. Maybe you're in a Robinson, you want to keep your hand on it. Maybe you do this in the Robinson. Fact is you have things to do and we're going to discuss this more in some other videos we're going to show you. But there's so much to this in cockpit. Your Flow guarding, collective guarding throttle. All these different things going on. If you come up with a good process, it's fairly easy. If you don't have a good process, bad things happen. Okay, so I'm going to set this down, and let's say you're brand new, because this is help holding that. You could just do this. Simply do this. Okay. Seat belts. Yep. Fuel shut off.
Yep.
It's good. All right, I'm gonna slide up to cyclic friction collective and pedals. Okay. My hands are free to do those. All right. And then you could come back and go, okay, throttle. Check the throttle. Collective. Check the collective. Cyclic friction on. And you could do this step by step. That way when you look away and you're doing something, you're coming right back to that kneeboard. And what I would further caution you is let's say you get start getting comfortable with it. And maybe you do this where keep the engines start up here, Right. Because before the engine's running, things aren't quite as. You still got to do things correctly. You still have to do them step by step, but the pressure is not on because the engine's not running. You know, the blades aren't spinning. So you can take your time here with these. So let's say maybe you've got 10 or 20 lessons under your belt, and the checklist is making more sense, but you still want to stay organized. You could say, I'm gonna put this here to where we're gonna start the engine. So let's just work through this. Do our seat belts, check all our controls, check the rotor brake. And you could simply go down the list, make sure everything's good to go. But I would then say this is the part where things can go bad. All right. Throttle. Twist for priming. Throttle closed. Yep. Battery strobes on. And I know at flight schools you're probably taught battery on. Alternator on.
Clutch engaged.
And if that's the way they're teaching you, that's fine. But you could do something like, okay, I know I'm going to do three things. I'm going to go start, or I'm going to go, battery on. Start, engage the clutch, have move it to where you're going to do those three things if you're. If you get what I'm saying, right? So make it fit. Do verify. I do those three things, I come back and I verify.
Yep.
I did the battery. Yes. I cleared the area. Yes. Ignition switch. I started. Engine started. Yep. Starter on. Light is out. Said engine RPM 5060%. Great. Verify everything is done and then move to the next step. And I've had a lot of people ask questions about these last few videos we did about our overspeed here. And people go, I don't exactly understand. That's the point. We got out of sequence. And we got out of sequence further to closer to the time when it's getting ready to go fly. We got out of sequence. If I'd have said, you know what, let's stop, let's back up and let's start again, the incident would have never happened. That's the learning point of this. Getting organized in the cockpit, controlling everything and having a good system. I can't stress enough after my 23 years of flying, this is so flipping important. Don't overlook it. So let's roll the next video, Heather, and we'll be back to do some giveaways.
So we have a couple minutes here while we're letting the engine warm up, not the weather is cooled. And we'll talk about getting yourself organized in the helicopter with your chart, if you choose to use one, your iPad. But you can see from hopefully that camera over there. Right now I have, I'm using my checklist, which is kind of handy for doing your startup. Then I have a sectional chart right there just for demo because. Right. Almost none of us use them anymore. Right. But our examiner on the private pilot. On the private pilot allows you to have an iPad, but he also wants you to have a paper backup. So if the iPad freezes, you've still.
Got something to use.
And we recently had a problem checkride. Got a couple hundred hours working on his private always done the iPad. And even though he had a chart, he got confused when the iPad froze. And he was like, well, I didn't really know how to use the chart. And we're like, well, we had it all forted, folded up for you. It was under there. But what do I do? And I'm like, all you do is take it out from underneath the iPad, put it in, and you could have navigated with the chart. So Anyway, in the R44, R22, you got to be thinking about, okay, how much room do I have here? And what's going to happen with the control movements, engines running, blades are spinning. So I can't get too crazy showing you with the cyclic right now, but give you a little idea. Be thinking about how much room do you have between your leg. IPad hitting the cyclic. How much room do you have over here? So this is something to consider. Recently took this thing to 100 hour. And Lindsay that's sitting here with me was with me that day. I'm like, I'm gonna show you in fly how to deal with all this stuff.
And I realized pretty quickly, because I'm.
Always flying around the pattern, so I hadn't done this in a while.
Right.
It could be difficult.
Once you're in flight, all of a.
Sudden, you're going, okay, I'm at altitude, and I can, you know, put a little friction on my collector to take my hand off. But it's still very awkward once you're in flight to actually move this stuff around. So I'm gonna just set the checklist over here for the side, so figuring out how you want this stuff to be. We are actually gonna maybe go do.
Some radio work here at a local airport.
And I have the iPad underneath, so we're gonna end up using that. But just sitting here on the ground, blade spinning. Look at how much I'm dicking around, trying to figure out what do I want where I can open this up for the iPad. The iPads down below. I can even take this off. I'll put it in the back seat. And so here's one option. You could have the iPad right here, and then if you're using a backup chart for, say, a checkride, or you just wanted to have a chart for backup going cross country, you could sue something more simply like this. This is what I'm about. For the private pilot checkride, he was set up like this. IPad freezes. They're on their cross country. He panics. His chart was right here, where he could have just went like this, put it here, got his bearings straight, and continued on. But he freaked out without the iPad. And I was speaking with Taz Christman, 2018 Flight Instructor of the year, one of our online instructors, and he said.
I have to take away the iPads.
From people, and I have to turn the radio off sometime because people are so intense on focusing on this iPad and messing with radios that they let the aircraft get, you know, go outside.
The profile of where we want to.
Be while we're flying. So I do want to add. You do see me taking my hand off the collective, but we're at 60%. Collective is locked. So once I start rolling that thing up, my hand will not leave that collected. But you can see how just in the cockpit, dealing with your checklist, your chart, your iPad.
My.
My point is practice with this stuff on the ground, in the hangar, before you go fly, get it all situated to where you need it. I just for fun, I'll put this back down here below. But look how much this is monkeying around. You do not want to try to be doing this during flight. It's just we tried it. I thought I'm gonna be the expert and show you how to whip this stuff around. It was. It looked difficult.
It was. It was so difficult.
I'm like, you know what? I'm not making this video because I just look a complete moron trying to fly and adjust these things. So take the time on the ground, figure out what works for you. The and like in my case, right here, that's kind of hitting. So I'm going to again, my collective's locked. I'm going to reach down here. I'm going to slide this back a little bit on my leg so that it's the corner of this is not hitting that right there. That feels much more comfortable. And I feel like I'll be fine over here with my right hand because I can move my leg a little bit.
So this feels pretty good.
I can get away with this, not feel too bad about it. So again, just take your time before you go fly and figure out where you're going to put things and what's going to work best for you in the cockpit.
When you feel the pressure to fly, but know the right decision is to stay on the ground. Hit the hogs. No, go and live to fly another day. Helicopterground.com.
Okay, keep in mind, furnace is running. It'll go off in a minute. I just turned it down. And Heather's got to quiet the little right thing in the corner. Heather. So keep in mind these videos I'm showing you, all these videos were made right before we had this overspeed two weeks ago. So I'm already harping on getting organized using the checklist. You know, finding ways to work to get better with the checklist. This is all good stuff and that's why that's what today is about. We appreciate all the comments in there so far. So you saw I showed you on the couch a minute ago. This is cool, the strap. But having this additional strap helps keep it makes it slide even. It's harder to slide it. I just can't stress enough. Step by step. Don't get screwed up. If you do back up in the checklist, it's best just to go back and start over. So we're going to give away first there. Furnace went off first. We're going to give away. We have a whole bunch of stuff laying here. As you can tell at the end of this video we're going to roll the packages that are available right now. Look at all this stuff. We got E6Bs, we got plotters, we got logbooks. We have PTs for private PTs for commercial and flight instructor PTs, instrument rating, helicopter flying handbooks, Aviation instructor handbooks, the helicopter instructor handbook, instrument flying handbook, all the basics. And we got some cool specials right now that go with the 12 month yearly memberships or the pro membership Pro. You get just dang near everything that's here. And the hogs ball cap we're gonna give away. Let me ask the first question. Heather has a private pilot study guide over there just like I do so she can see how you answer. This is down below 400 question the private pilot study guide. Things you could be asked on a private pilot checkride. Try to make this as simple as possible. Type your answer in chat if you're watching this recorded this video later as it's recorded. Sorry you had to join live. So if you say something in comments later you won't win because we gave away this stuff live. So this helicopter flying handbook has a little crease in it. All right. Most everything that's come in has come in real nice and I don't want to ship this to somebody when you're paying good money for a nice package of stuff. So it's just a crease, it's not a big deal. So we're going to give this away. Heather's going to put this in the mail and ship it to you. The helicopter flying handbook. You need this for any rating that we're talking about. So this is the book that she is going to ship you and I'm going to ask you a question. There are five types of what I'm going to ask you about. You only have to type one of the five in the box to make it easy. Heather's going to be monitoring in chat. Remember your chat on your device isn't going to show exactly or most likely is not going to show as the Hogs chat. So people email after and say I won that I was ahead of Joe Smith. We go by our chat and the chat's visible after this video renders after we go live. So you can always go back and later and look at it. I don't even know if it stays. It should stay. So we're. Heather's going to give away the first person as it shows in our chat. If your chat shows differently, we're sorry about your luck. Oh and then we got a little. Got something else cool Here, get on with the question. Give people time to answer. Just answer one of these. Please use proper spelling. What are the five types of fog? I only want one. Just name one. Please spell correctly. There are five types of fog. Type one in chat. I'll let Heather monitor that and check out what a member sent us. Now don't laugh. You know, at first it sounds kind of silly, but check this out. Great big huge paper clip, you know, not a bad idea. Think about this. They just came in the mail. And I'll tell you what, if you live in the US and you want one of these while supplies last, I have Heather drop one in the envelope and send it to you. Type something in the chat like, I don't know, Hogs Holiday Special 2023. If you type that in there, then email heatherhelicoptergreen.com she'll put one of those in the mail for you. Because this member sent this to us to help you with a checklist. Let's say you're not using an E board or man, I can't afford a knee board right now. This is actually not a bad idea. Again, think about the guy that, you know was with me when we had that overspeed. If he'd have been using this, we would have never got out of sequence because I'll repeat it again. He jumped around a couple times. I kept going. Okay, we got to get better with this checklist. We were jumping around. Look at how this little paperclip could help you stay focused during your startup. If you are setting it down on your leg or whatever you're doing, that is a smooth way to stay with the checklist. And I get it. You know, when I was new or heck if I haven't been flying for a while or I'm flying a different aircraft, I can get out of sequence like anybody, right? It's nice to have a little cheat. Whether you're using an E board, you want to use a great big huge paper clip like that. Not a bad idea. Not a bad idea at all. And somebody recently mentioned using the pre flight check like checklist like in foreflight where you can go actually check the box on an iPad. Not a bad idea. I say whatever you got to do to stay organized. Hands down. You have a winner yet, Heather? I do. Daniel Penny. Daniel Penny.
Yep.
Daniel Penny, you are the winner of the helicopter flying handbook. We got another video. We're going to roll here in a second still about cockpit management. And the next video I want to show you is very short and we won't be gone long, but it's something I see even advanced pilots coming here. This past summer I did nine ratings in the R44 and even guys working on commercial and CFI. This is one area where I feel like two or three of them were doing what I'm going to show you in this video and what you should not be doing. So we're going to get to that. And before we show you that video, private if you, if you go for the private pilot 12 months, if you're brand new, you get a logbook, you get the E6B, you get a plotter. You need to have these getting started. Yes, you can use your iPad on the checkride most likely. But like our examiner still wants you to be taught the old fashioned way with a chart and he wants a paper chart as a backup to your iPad. Private pilot study guide. You get that private pilot PTS must have, you have to have that far. AIM 2024, you're getting that Helicopter flying handbook, you're getting that at private pilot you're going to get. This is a freaking deal. You're going to get one of these. I've got five more on their way on order. This one we're going to give away here in a little bit and then. Hogs backpack. This thing has a cooler for your drink or desktop or a laptop thing inside. We'll show you more of that in a minute. We're going to give this one away with the hogs patch. We're going to give it away in a little bit. So this we did the helicopter flying handbook. When we come back, we'll do this. When we come back we'll do this one. So do you have your video queued up, Heather? All right, this video is not long, but this is important. Heather, go ahead and roll that video.
All right, we have one more tip here for you. And luckily I was trained. When we set the helicopter down, which I'm going to do right now, we slowly go down to the ground, go down, pushing down, pushing down, get through our air cushion. Once you get to the ground, you want to go nice and smooth collective all the way down. And then when you're ready to start picking up, it's a nice gradual smooth pull using a two step process.
Get the aircraft light in the skids, get it up light and lift the.
Aircraft up off the ground. Now sometimes here's what you'll find people do. They'll come here, they've been training with someone else and we'll go do a set down. They'll Go, okay, they're coming down, they're coming down, they're coming down, they're coming down.
We get.
We get to the ground, and then they stop. Well, you're kind of at a dangerous point there. Don't just pause all the way down. It's just not a good idea to keep that collective right there at that spot where you're ready to take off again. And people will do that, and then they'll start talking, carrying a conversation. You know, bad things can happen when you're not staying on top of the controls and paying attention to what you're doing. So not a good habit to get partially to the ground, set down, then just stop or just yank back up again. Anytime you set the collect helicopter down, the ground collective all the way down.
If you want to lift back up.
Again, then you just start your lift up. Everything we do in the helicopter should be slow, smooth, methodical. There's never a reason to do anything fast, never a reason to do anything abrupt. Even in helicopter ems, it was slow, smooth, methodical. Nothing we did at any part of flying was rushed. So every time you sit down, make sure you put that collective all the way down.
Okay, next giveaway. This is a backpack with the Hogs flight patch. Okay, this giveaway, we ordered this to try it out. Not bad. But I ended up choosing these to go with the packages. So these are what come with the paid year, lease or pro. Still not a bad little backpack. You need something to carry along. Hogs flight patch right there. So that's this giveaway. Better than nothing, right? And I chose weather questions today because it's November, just after Thanksgiving. This is the type of year for us in the Midwest where we got to be thinking about weather again, right? And it takes more time weather checking. Weather decisions get harder this time of year. So simple question, and I need to hear a number and then greater than or less than or you'll know if you know, I'm talking about within how much or more or less. There'll be a short phrase for the answer's question. What temperature dew point spread will likely cause fog to form? I want to hear this much.
Or what?
I'll read it again. What temperature dew point spread will likely cause fog to form? How much or what? So while we're waiting on an answer to come up, the next video is I forget. But let's talk a minute about the video that just aired putting that collective all the way down. I've had guys this summer again going for commercial and CFI where we're talking, they get on the ground, and they stop lowering the collective and start talking. It's like, no. Anytime you sit down in an aircraft, in a helicopter, collective, nice and smooth all the way down. And let me tell you something else I've seen in the cockpit all summer. Too much of this, too much up and down, too aggressive on collective. Those inputs need to be smooth. All right, do you have a winner yet, Heather? No, not yet. All right, I'll. Okay. Skid up says less than three. Less than three. Okay, you call it. Is it close enough? Yeah. All right. It's 3 degrees or less. Anytime you're at 3 degrees or less, you got to be worried about fog and even be watching those as you're looking forward to that flight tonight, that flight tomorrow when you keep checking weather, watch what's going on with that temperature, dew, point spread, and you'll see that thing start closing in when you get to three degrees or less, man. Might be a good point to stay on the ground and not even go and call it off, because when you get 3 degrees or less, telling you bad things can happen. And we're doing our best here at HOGS to help you guys and girls make good decisions and stay on the ground. So go ahead and queue up your next video, Heather, and when we come back, we're gonna give away. And this is nice. It's. It's Kenny Keller approved. I've already got people going, hey, how can I get one? So I've reached out to the gentleman that makes them. This is a nice knee board. And I. I've already mentioned. He sent the first two to me as a freebie. And I really like. And I like these. I'm not saying it's the cheapest, but you know what? I looked at others online. I'm like, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope. And I went back to this one, and I really, really like this knee board. I like it a lot. So we're going to give this away when we come back. It's a nice knee board. So go ahead and roll the next video, and we'll be back for that giveaway.
All right, while we're warming up the.
Helicopter, I want to point out something that I've seen in the recent past. People get sometimes get a little bit sloppy on guarding the controls. A really good technique is from the beginning, especially for. For newbies and instructors. New instructors. You really want to focus on guarding the controls. Once the engine's running, somebody needs their hand, have their hand on that collective guarding that throttle. And there's two of you in here. Instructor, student.
There's no reason that one or the.
Other can't always be guarding that collective.
And this particular helicopter, R44 isn't spring.
Loaded and not necessarily going to pop.
Up on you, but it could.
And there are other aircraft I've flown spring loaded where they will come up.
On you and you can imagine the.
Danger if you take your hand away and the collective comes up and it's happened. There's fatal accidents that have happened from nobody guarding the collective, the collective raising, nobody was ready and the helicopter rolls over. So there's different methods of doing this, but make sure you work with your instructor and good technique on not only guarding the controls, but how you friction on and friction off. So like for example, for me, anytime I'm going to take my hand off.
That collective and let's say move forward.
To the cyclic friction. I'm going to go back, reach back here and make sure that my collective is locked, take my hand forward, release or lock my friction on my cyclic because I've got it in my right hand and then my hand goes back to the collective and then I'm going.
To release the collective lock.
I've seen some really loosey goosey people in the past where they get pretty laxed with the friction is not locked on the cyclic and they're doing startup and they just let go and then the cyclic falls one side or another and the helicopter starts shaking. That's just not a good habit to be in. So again, there's some different methods you can be taught, but I've seen a lot of people recently just not being quite as careful about protecting all the controls because there's so many different bad.
Things that can happen.
And I even had a recent student who was frustrated in the moment and he kind of went, you know, here, your controls. And just almost like threw them at me. Like, I was just coming up to help because I could see he was struggling a little bit. But he saw me going to go to the controls, he's like, okay, your controls. I'm not going to demonstrate it because we're blades are turning and we're, we're good, we're at, you know, I'm guarding everything. But he was just like this, like. And he just takes his hands off and I grab it real quick.
And I didn't say anything in the.
Moment, but after the fact I said, hey man, positive change of flight controls. We learned that from the very beginning. You have to stay with that. And just because you're Frustrated and you're gonna just give up. You don't want to fly it anymore. You have to say, can you please take the controls? Your instructor gets them. Yes, I have the controls. And that should be a visual thing between the both of you and you know what's happening. Not a your controls. And I had somebody else kind of do that to me where it was just a real quick like, here, you take it. It's like, no, that's not how this works. Can you take the controls? I have them. Yes, I have the controls. You need to be very specific about this because a helicopter can get wrecked and you can definitely fail your checkride, which that's second to getting yourself killed over doing something stupid. Not protecting your controls in the aircraft. So make sure you're taking the time to keep track of all your controls, your frictions and make sure you have a positive way of keeping track of them and how you're going to lock and unlock. And also know by your poh which ones can you friction in flight, which you can't. Helicopters can vary make to model, so know from your poh, can I friction.
The collective in flight?
Can I put some friction on the cyclic in flight? Make sure you look in the PoH and understand if that's something that you can do.
All right, next giveaway is this spanking brand new, handy dandy badass knee boards. His website, they're called badass kneeboards. And I appreciate that. This he's a small business and that's why I don't mind helping him out because I can tell, you know, he's working a job running his business on the side like most of us did or did in the beginning. And I want to help him out. Moagir.net and what's my point? He calls him around his website badass kneeboards. And I like that because the kids got the guts to call them badass knee boards. And we'll probably throw a hog sticker on it too, just like this one. Yeah, why not throw the hog sticker on there? Oh, yeah. On those knee boards there's two options. He sent me both and I think I like the one that I chose that's on there. He just wanted me to see what was available. So this one's a little shinier, it doesn't change much. But I'll just show you on the camera in case you go to his website to look around. This one's shiny, this one's a little bit more rough and color wise matches, which probably nobody cares, but I like the rougher surface for some reason, I don't know why, but apparently you can order it with this more slick surface. So if that's something you're interested in, I'll mention his website again. Moa Gear.net again. Small businessman. You know, I like supporting the little guy because I feel like we're still the little guy and I'd like to see if this gentleman some sales. So I'm going to pimp Pro pilot before I give that away. So let's say you're brand. You know, if you're already flying, you may have everything already but if you are going, you know, you're going off the street to cfi. You want to go pro pilot. It's log book, it's plotter, it's E6B. It's private pilot PTS, commercial pilot and flight instructor PTS, private pilot study guide, FAR AIM manual 2024. I covered the PTS's right? Helicopter flying Handbook. You all need that. Everybody Student Private Commercial instruments, CFI Aviation Instructors Handbook. You have to learn the fois or you're not even going to get through the oral portion and even take your CFI checkride. Yes, we help you with these inside hogs, but you have to have this as a cfi. And then I like this, the Helicopters Instructors Handbook. FAA publication. It's covering basically kind of. It's set up like the Helicopter Flying Handbook but it's tell it's talking to you as a CFI and points out common errors and things that you're going to see teaching someone. I really think that you should have that. And the HOGS flight patch and the knee board and the cool again, check this thing out. We've been, like I said, I've been ordering different stuff and that's part of the giveaways, right? Check this dude out. Look at that. That comes embroidered on. It's not a patch. Got several different pockets. This one's for keep your water bottle cool or whatever your drink you put in there that's insulated. Inside it has a pouch for your laptop. Full size. Not full size, but a good size laptop. Laptop sleeve in there. Then there's another little package for documents. Everything that's on this table and we'll show that in a video at the end. Everything that goes on this table will fit in this bag. Everything. Heather loads it up, puts it on and so do I. I think we show that in the video that we're going to show all the packages here shortly at the end. And then Pro pilot hogs ball cap. You get all that with the current pro and the. And the online prices markdown as well.
So.
And then you can just. Do you have two options when you go for the yearly or the pro. You can go for just the online courses or the online courses with gear. Ends tomorrow night. Tuesday night. Okay, so I'm going to make it easy on you again. Please use proper spelling. Slow down enough that you can spell the words. Word or words correctly. So for the kneeboard, this is a nice giveaway. I'm gonna feel. Yeah, not cheap. I'm gonna feel bad shipping that up before my new ones get here. That's nice. Neat board. All right, you only have to name one of these. And if you're flying at this point, working towards a rating, you got to know these. Name 1 of 4. What? And this is. This is a weather question.
Okay.
If you watch the evening news, you'll. They'll talk about this during the weather section. What are the four fronts? Just name one. Please spell correctly. This is probably the easiest question I've ever given for something so cool. And Heather's gonna cue up the video showing exactly everything that comes with each membership. Private, commercial, CFI and pro. And we go through it step by step and talk more about the different pieces and why I chose the packages for the different memberships as I did. Do you have a winner yet, Heather?
They're only putting one word. Okay.
Titus. Titus. All right, so Titus is the winter. Winter. Titus is the winter. I haven't had any beers today. I promise. You are the winner of the knee board by MOA Gear. Nice little knee board. So we're gonna. Do you have other video queued up, Heather? We're gonna go ahead and roll that and we'll come back if you have any questions, but we want to roll you and roll this video and show you exactly what comes with all these memberships on these specials that end tomorrow night, the 28th at midnight. So, Heather, go ahead and roll that video and we'll be back for. Maybe we'll do a bonus. Maybe we'll do a bonus round. We'll see you in a minute. Brand new, different, never offered before. We're adding packages for private pilot, commercial pilot, certified flight instructor. In the pro pilot we've had together for a couple of weeks now, we're going to show you this. So we're going to have gear again for private pilot, commercial pilot, certified flight instructor, and pro pilot. So another quick look. People are enjoying the fact that they finally get to see themselves up on the Hog Hogs wall of Fame. So we're gonna give you a little shot of some more people because we've had people saying, hey, I know I'm up there, but I haven't seen it in a video yet. So we're gonna keep highlighting the Hogs Wall of Fame as we make fresh videos and fresh content because people enjoy seeing themselves up there, right? I mean, why wouldn't you? It's a fun deal that after you pass your checkride, Private commercial instrument or cfi, we get you up on the Hogs Wall of fame and send you a no go button. So let's head over here. At the private level, you're just starting out, you know you're going for. You've made the decision, maybe you've had your intro. I'm going for private pilot. I'm not going to stop. So we've included all the basics. There might be some things you might want to add or change, but to give you what I think you really ought to have and then some extra goodies to help carry this stuff along and look cool while you're doing it. So private level, you have to learn with the e6b and the plotter and some people are going to snoot their nose and go, ah, nobody uses that anymore. You have to learn at the private level. You will be able to use foreflight and your iPad for the more advanced stuff. But the case of say our examiner, he lets you use the iPad on your private pilot checkride, but he wants a chart as a backup with a line drawn on it with your landmarks for your cross country planning. He still wants privates to be taught the old fashioned way, know how the basics are done, get that good situational awareness and then he will allow you to use the iPad. So we'll talk about more of that in a minute. So that those are basics. Pilot logbook. Once you start flying, got to have a pilot logbook. Private pilot pts, you must have this. This is the outline of all the knowledge areas. You're going to have to know the tolerances for your flight. Not enough. Instructors in flight schools are always pushing this. You need to be working through this, your instructor needs to be working through it and you need to be working through it together with your instructor. Practical test standards and of course any of these things or most of these things, you can have electronic versions and that's great. I think having both is best. Right? That's my opinion. 2024, 2024 FAR AIM manual, you need that. At the private level, you're going to need a new One every year. It's great on an iPad or an iPhone electronic device, but I can actually look stuff up faster in here. So it's nice to have the hard copy. Helicopter flying Handbook you must have the FAA says as a student, as a private, as a commercial, as an instrument, as a cfi, as a DPE or an examiner, you must have this book and you must be working through this book and be familiar with the knowledge in this book because that's the basics of all our training is based on the helicopter flying Handbook. Private pilot study guide. This is 400 pages. Four 80 pages, 80 plus pages. 400 questions of things an examiner can ask you on a private pilot checkride. It's built spiral bound. We built this, we made this so you can open up on the table. It's got room to write in. Each chapter is duplicated so you can look at the first chapter, go through and write in your own answers. And then the same questions are duplicated in each chapter with the correct answer in there for you. So you can test your own knowledge and then check it with the proper answers. And this has got a whole bunch of stuff. 400 possible questions examiner may ask you on a checkride. We're including this. This is a knee board. Kick ass knee boards, I think is what he calls them badass knee boards. Gentleman that sent me, he sent me two of these. One of them we gave away during a live event. This one I've been using in the helicopter. You got to have an E board. And I've looked at some others out there and I'm like, you know what? I like the one that he shipped me. I've ordered another one for myself and then I placed another order for five more. So we're going to be adding these to these current packages for this holiday special and if people like them, we'll probably keep it with the future packages. Nice thing about this is old school clipboard. Put your checklist on here during startup and then the new ones I ordered have a strap across the so you can use that to help you go through the checklist. Because in the beginning you're kind of nervous and we just had a big problem with an overspeed because a student got out of sequence. This is a good way to keep yourself on track. And then look underneath. You want the iPad, great. You just go underneath and right there is the place for your iPad. So depending on how you want to configure this, you can have the old school on top and have your iPad right there. You can pull this Computer completely off if needed. I like this unit. I like what he's doing with these. And like I said, I just got online, I didn't like the others that I saw, so I ordered those and then the hugs backpack. Really happy with these. We've tried some different things. My daughter's boyfriend is a college student and I just got these and he saw one. He's like, dude, I need a new bag for college. And I go, do you want one? He looked it out and he goes, man, this is nice. And he's young and techy and he's up on what's cool. And he's like, man, this has got a. An actual laptop sleeve in there. You got a extra bag here for documents. And he pointed out, this one's insulated for your drink. Nice unit. All this stuff fits in there nice. And later at the end of the video, Heather's going to show you how all of it packs nice and neatly, even the big pro special with a whole bunch of more stuff that's all included currently with the private. So let's go to commercial next. So for commercial pilot, we substitute the commercial and flight instructor pts. You might be going to see if. I'll see if I later. If you do great. You already got the PTS. Must have got to be working through the PTS. So there's that. We left out the E6B and plotter because you should be at the corner commercial level now. You should already have those, but why not far aim 2024, you probably haven't grabbed yours yet. It's the end of 2023. So there's that helicopter flying book handbook again because we need it at student level, private level, commercial level, CFI level and examiner level. Private pilot study guide. Don't snooch your nose. Your private and your commercial check rides are very similar. Everything at the commercial level, they're going to ask you the same stuff, but they want you to know it more crisp, more clean to a higher standard. I'll guarantee you this book is going to help you at the commercial level because you got to know all that private pilot stuff. And I'll tell you, in my 23 years, people mess up because they forget the private stuff and they're not honing in on it. They just go, well, what do I got to know for a commercial, every single thing you had to know for private plus. And even better than plus, your commercial private limit is privileges limitations is going to help you get ready for the checkride. Trust me. Private, commercial, cfi, they start the same way, what do you have to have on you? What do you got to be current to fly all that stuff? Again, why the the new fancy knee board along with that, you might have one. It's this current package. Donate to a friend, give your friend. You're giving your buddy a checklist. Again, I'm going to be harping on startups checklists, going through things so you don't do a $50,000 damage repair to an aircraft from doing an overspeed or other bad things that can happen. And of course the backpack as well, along with the current commercial special. So let's reconfigure for cfi. All right, next CFI package. We designed this as though, let's say you're the person getting ready to make the plunge. You know you're going for it and you know you're going off the street to CFI. So for the CFI, we re included plotter E6B. You have to teach with these, right? You got to teach your private students with them. You need a hard copy. We threw the logbook back in both private because you're going to need this at your private level and. And you'll need it to use it to work with your students when you're working as a cfi. The commercial pilot and CFI pts. So you're covered from private through cfi. You have it to work on your own ratings. Again, the FAR AIM 2024 helicopter flying handbook. Yes, again, because you have to have it. Everybody needs it. Private Pilot Study Guide. You're going to use it to private, you're going to use it during the commercial. And then as a cfi you got to teach all that stuff. Still going to be good as a cfi. I just did a CFI and he was like, oh my God, this helped me a bunch. Last two CFIs, they liked going through that good stuff. So in addition CFI level, you need the helicopter instructor's Book handbook, FAA publication. So again it goes through the stuff you need to teach the maneuvers and all the basics and poh and all that kind of stuff. But they point out what you're going to see as instructor and what the common mistakes students are. So you'll need a copy of that to be the best you can be. And then you're going to need Aviation Structures Handbook because you're going to have to know the fois fundamentals of instructing. This is a must. First thing they're going to hit with you on your CFI checkride most likely will be fois if you don't go through the fois. You can't continue on with the checkride. So did I mention the. I did. I think again, I'm gonna keep harping on this slow, smooth, methodical checklist. Step by step. Everything has to be right. Patch and then cfi or I'm sorry, backpack. Backpack for the cfi. Again, we like this thing. I've already got the first order spoken for. I ordered five more because I thought these people are going to want these. And we'll get one more package, and then we'll have Heather come over and pack it up. So there is cfi. So, voila. If you're going to go for the pro membership, that's where we're going to add the addition of the Hogs ball cap. We went ahead and ordered another case of these. We order 12 at a time. We've been through two already. It's a nice hat. It's an expensive hat. Everybody's been enjoying this. I'm not buying cheapies. I'm buying the good stuff. And people have been loving them. So at the pro level, you get everything we just went through for CFI with the addition of the Hogs ball cap. She's going to pack it up again. So she's going to show you, and I'll just bore you like I do most of the time in videos. While she packs that up, she's going to show you how you can fit everything in this bag. Again, we did it in one video so far, and I was talking the last time we did it, before I knew it, boom, she had the thing loaded up. But we wanted to see if you can fit all this stuff into the Hogs backpack. And let's see what else. So this is our Thanksgiving special. Our intention is to keep this going. And again, we're trying products and, you know, combinations of things and what people are really liking. We've done some flight jackets, and we got some other gear on the way, so we'll keep honing and, you know, factoring it in. One thing we're going to do is we have a couple of scratch and dents over here. We have a backpack that we ordered that we have the flight patch on. And I decided I like this one much better. So we're going to do a giveaway soon on that backpack with the Hogs flight patch on it. And then we have a helicopter flying handbook that came through. It has kind of a crease in it. Haven't been super impressed with all the stuff I've ordered. Sometimes they come in with Bent edges and creases and things. So we're going to do some giveaways soon on scratch and dent items. It's like I don't want to ship it to the customer because it's got a, a crease or something. But we'll, it'll be brand new books with just a little bit of an issue. We're going to give some of those away. Boom. In that amount of time, she got all that wrapped up, that whole full table of stuff packed in the Hog's backpack. So I don't know what else to tell you other than we'll put links below. We're planning on putting some links below not only for our memberships for the, for the holiday special, but also if you're a current member, you already got yearly or you got pro or you're a monthly and you just want the gear. We're going to go over and we're going to create some links. We'll put those down below as well where you can just add the pack the backpack for the package you want for this one currently. And again, if you have any questions, you might be seeing this video a month from now or a year from now. Check in with us because the packages may have changed. Look forward to some more specials during the holidays and subscribe. Click the bell. Peace out. See you in the next video. Go below. Good stuff. We'll throw freebies down there too.
When you feel the pressure to fly, but know the right decision is to stay on the ground, hit the hogs. No go and live to fly another day. Helicopterground.com.
Sa. Now you're back up. There we go. All right, we're back. It wouldn't be Hogs, man, those were going so smooth. The transitions one to the next. I was like, we may have done a live event without something going wrong. Battery goes dead at the end. All right, last giveaway. 2024, far aim. Little tiny scratch on there. Not bad, but let's call that a giveaway. And we'll include the Hogs Patch Velcro flight patch along with the FAR AIM 2024. And I'm going to make this so easy, as easy as it is to be specific, this is going to be four words. Please use proper spelling and proper, proper capitalization. What I'm going to show you, you can get down below. And maybe, just maybe, we'll give one of these away tomorrow because we are going to go live tomorrow. Type that exactly as you see it. Proper spaling, proper spaces, proper capitalization. And remember, it's How Heather sees it in the chat as it comes up. These are down below along with all the rest of the links for the memberships with specials. They're all down below the video. So first person to type in the name of this book, proper spacing, proper capitalization. Heather will call it out when she sees it. And yeah, tomorrow night, Midnight Tuesday night, November 28th, Stuart Jamison. Yep. All right, Stuart Jamison, you get the FAR AIM 2024. I hope you're in the US because we only ship in the US and if you are in the US I you in the US if you could answer real quick, let us know, that would give somebody else opportunity. If you're not, I should have said that earlier. And I'm. I hate to say that because shipping out the country has become a freaking problem. Horrible problem. So email Heather and November 28, tomorrow night at midnight, all the links are down below for all these memberships we talked about. We showed you in detail what was with each one. And of course, we'll change it up. You know, we're gonna continue to change it up, but people have asked for a long time for a type of a kit like this, and we're gonna figure out, you know, we might tweak one package a little more here, a little more there, but we're pretty proud of it. We like it. So did he answer you yet? Is he in the U.S. he's in the U.S. all right, well, I guess let's wrap it up, come back tomorrow, we'll send out an email and we'll give away some more stuff and we'll find some cool trip, we'll find some cool training stuff to talk about something. I can always figure out something. All right, you can go ahead and.
