I SPENT ALL THAT MONEY: And I still can't HOVER!

A short YouTube video by Kenny Keller (with Heather) about helicopter flight training. They discuss a common student complaint—having 16 hours of instruction yet still unable to hover—and argue instructors should let students practice hovering early (they suggest 3–5 hours to begin hovering solo segments). The video also advertises a 10-day July 4th promotion (50% off memberships, code July50, links on helicopterground.com) and provides contact details (phone and email) and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

I spent all my money and I still can't hover I spent all, all.
My money or all this money? I spent all my money all that.
Money all that money and I still.
Can'T hover I spent all that money and I still can't hover all right, I'm in the mood. I'm getting in the mood.
Yeah. Well, I think Brian had a good point with that subject.
I think you had a great point with that.
I think a lot of instructors probably do forget that it's not their money they're spending.
Exactly, exactly. Right. Which is our topic that we're going to get to here in just a minute. That's right as Heather and I are going for a flight. Penny and Heather with helicopter line ground school. Before we go, warning caution lights are out. Gauges in the green. We got fuel. We're all looking good. Hover pre takeoff check. So here we go. Adventure helicopter's helicopter, it's a little shaky. We've been waiting on a tracking for about two months now but oh well. And waiting on a trim to get fixed. But hey, that's besides the point.
It's a beautiful day, beautiful day.

So the topic we were starting with there that Brian brought up to us, he recently talked to a member who said I've spent all that money and I still can't hover. He's got 16 hours. Seven, four, eight Sierra Alpha. Short final touch and go. Seven, four, eight Sierra alpha. He's got 16 hours of time. He still can't hover and he still can't take off and land without the instructor on his on the controls. Left driver 2 5. So at 16 hours, you ought to be doing something without the controller. Right. Or the instructor right there. Maybe the instructor's new, I don't know the deal. But at 16 hours, you ought to at least have a pretty decent chance at hovering without the instructor on the controls with you. The instructor should be following along and have his hands close. But if 16 hours, he's never taking his hands off the controls. Yeah, you're not building any confidence that you're even flying the thing. So you spent all that money and the guy won't take his hands off the controls. You know, I had a Vietnam era pilot I flew with once and he was awesome and I learned a ton of stuff with him, but everybody complained he would never take his hands off. 4 8th gear Alpha departing. 2 7, close traffic Warsaw. I understand why instructors do that, but on the flip side, you have to give a student the confidence that he can fly the helicopter or she can fly the helicopter on his own or her own. So if you're at that problem, let's say you got 16 or 20 hours and the instructors are never taking the sounds off the controls. You can't hover and you can't take off and land. You should be able to be doing some of that, even if it's rough looking and the instructor's right there guiding you. At that amount of time, you should be doing more than him never taking the hands off the controls. And you shouldn't at 16 hours feel like, wow, I've spent all this money and the guy won't even take his hands off the controls. And I can't hover alone and I can't take off and land alone. That's not right.
Nope.
I mean, unless this guy was just like so horrible. But I can't believe that in my years of training, people can usually pick it up easier than you think. Three to five hours, you ought to be at least starting to be able to hover on your own. You may not be great at it, but it should be good enough that you can at least have a little bit of time when the instructor goes, okay, taking my hands off and let you fly for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds. And as you gain confidence, he or she can remove their hands more often and more frequently. So there's our flight training tip number one. I don't know if it's even a.
Tip, but use your voice and tell your instructor you want to work on hovering until you're comfortable to three miles out to entering west downwind Runway 22, Marion.
Whether you're you know, going to ask for a different instructor or just ask the guy to the guy or girl and say, hey, Sierra alpha downwind, two seven Warsaw. This is why I like to have that. Put it on the refergency frequency so I don't have to pause every five seconds over everybody and their brother in a pattern. Nobody flies till you're trying to shoot a video and then they all want to come out and get in a pattern and start messing up your program your whole day. All right, we had to pause a little bit there because everybody and her brother's flying a pattern today and on the radio at the same time competing to talk. Moral of the story is if you're at 16 or 20 hours and the guy's never taking his hands off the controls of the girl, I'd be having a serious talk with them and figure out what's going on. So come back for the next nine days for more flight training tips.
