Learn Good Technique in Piston before Turbine Helicopter!

Kenny Keller shares helicopter startup and shutdown habits, including using the strobe light as a reminder to turn off the battery. This matters because turbine helicopters need a full battery to start, so draining it in a piston helicopter is a costly mistake to break later.

All right, we have another little tip for you here. And just in the recent past, I've noticed I'm about. We're about 50, 50 on what people do during the startup and during the shutdown. As far as the aircraft, what I was taught from the very beginning is we always leave the strobe light on down here, even when we shut the aircraft down. And the beauty of that is, if you get out and walk away after you're done flying and you forgot to shut the battery off as you're walking away, oh, that strobe is flashing, you'll know, okay, turn. Go back and turn the battery off. If you turn the strobe off before the battery's off or if you turn the strobe, get in the habit, turn the strobe off. Maybe you walk away and you leave the battery on. Don't realize the battery is on because the strobe's off. If I said that right, you walk away, you come back two hours later, and your battery's dead. I even had an instance. I landed once to go in for lunch, walk inside and sit down. Somebody goes, hey, whoever's flying the helicopter, your battery's on because your strobe's flashing. I'm like, oh, man. Ran down, shut the battery off. So by just leaving that strobe light on all the time, even when you shut the power off, just be in that habit. And I noticed about 50, 50, about half the people that have been here to fly leave the strobe on. About half the time, people turn the strobe off. I think it's a great habit just to leave that thing on all the time, because you always want to be nice to your battery. And this becomes more important when you move into the turbine aircraft later, like sometimes time, people turn on a battery and they're checking the lights, and Bob comes walking in, hi, Bob. How you doing? And you talk about the fish fry last Friday night for 15 minutes, and your battery's on and your lights flashing, and maybe your radios are on, and the whole time it's draining your power down. When you get into some of the turbine models, you need a full battery when you go to start. So get in the habit of turn the battery on, do what you got to do, and get that battery back off again because you're saving your battery for that turbine start. So even when you're flying the pistons and you're learning and you're training, it's a good habit just to get in the habit of battery on. Check what you need to check battery back off again. Don't dilly dally too much. All right, as we're doing a shutdown here, first thing I'm gonna do is roll the RPM down and then lock my controls. So we have been shooting some videos for you on some different topics. And I'm gonna reach back, lock the collective. Now I can reach for my left hand, lock the cyclic. Hands back on controls.
