Kenny Keller walks through the proper way to check your magnetos in flight: climb to 75% RPM, switch to the right mag for two clicks, return to both to confirm it recovers, then repeat on the left. The key is building a habit so you don't accidentally stay on one mag too long.

About 75% RPM.
Expect more than a 7% drop in RPM within two seconds when switching mags (then recover when returned to both).

So, hey, I'm here at Canyon Hogs, and we have a little bit of a technique here to test our magnetos. Once we take the helicopter up to 75%. Usually people will test them at random. They will go to the left magneto or to the right magneto first. Without a technique. Well, I mean, it is advisable and this is something that I learned some time ago just to go ahead and when we do our magneto check, test the right magneto first and then go back to both. Then left magneto and go back to both. That is so when we click back, we don't run the risk of going back to the left magneto instead of the right. Creates a habit. It's a pattern. So we go right Magneto 1, 2 clicks 1 million, 2 million, then go back more than 7% in two seconds. Once it's recovered, then we go to left Magneto 1 million, 2 million, back to both, and it recovers the RPM. And then we verify visually, of course, that it's back to both and it creates a safety habit for all pilots.
That's good. I didn't mention that in the one I did the other day about don't stay too long on one mag. This is another video on a mag. A little technique. Yeah. And I. I never really thought about it. I just kind of randomly did whichever. I never really used that. But that's good. I like it.
It's a small one, but, you know, it's a good practice.
It's what we do. We learn from everybody we fly with. We learn something different.
Absolutely.
Somebody new, Somebody's been doing it forever. It doesn't matter. You always learn something from somebody else that you may have never heard before.
That's absolutely right. Perfect.
