MAKE IT RED, AND GO TO BED

Kenny Keller explains why helicopter pilots need to say no to bad weather, using the EMS phrase "make it red and go to bed." He's launching a red no-go button and announcing Helicopter Online Ground School's 8th anniversary celebration with daily live trivia, giveaways, and discounts running March 1-15, 2020.

All right, Kenny, with helicopter lane ground school, just a kind of a fun video tonight we're going to talk about a bunch of stuff. Make it, make it red and go to bed. I want to talk about that first because, you know we've been talking about the no go decision and we've been talking about all these accidents and things that's been going on for a while, right? And the big talk is now, oh, everybody should be IFR certified and you should be able to have all this equipment on your helicopter and you know, blah blah, blah, blah, blah. Well, let's back up and go back to pilots not even taking off at all, right? It's making a good go, no go decision and not going when the weather's bad. Okay. That should be as important as getting everybody, you know, transition to be able to go IFR because that's hard to do. So something we've been talking about and that where you've got ordered is something really cool and we've put our own take on the good old easy button. That was easy. Okay. So I told you in a past video about in ems, I was taught by a Vietnam era pilot, you know, you make this no go decision stressful and he made it fun by going. You look at the weather, you make your decision. You're not going to. That was easy. And you hit the button and it helps you, makes you feel better, right? Makes you feel better about it. So what we've created and they're on order and we're trying to get them here for next week. For our 15 days of crazy sales and fun, we've ordered our own no go button and we're going to be giving these away and we haven't seen. This is the only proof we've got so far. It's a red button, says no go and it'll have a little audio to it. You'll be able to hit it and it's going to have our logo on the side. We're hoping these come out as cool as what we want them to be and we're going to give those away during the 15 days between March 1 and March 15. March 1, 2020 is eight years online and we're so friggin excited we can't stand it. This year is going to be the biggest celebration yet. So the make it red and go to bed. That came from EMS too because when the you're doing your weather check at the beginning of your shift, you let your dispatch know you're green, you're yellow or you're Red, green means hey, we can go just about anywhere within our area. Flight comes in, we'll take it. Yellow means for dispatch to call you and say, hey, we have this flight from here, point A to point B. Can you check the weather and can you go yellow? Yellow means it's uncertain. You have to make a decision. If the weather was just like hard ifr, like I mean really, really crappy. We had a saying, it was called make it red and go to bed. For the operator I worked for. It was allowed to sleep during your shift as long as you were there and pre flighted and ready to go and could get up and make a decision. But when you know the weather was really, really crappy, like where you know it's forecast, it's going to be crap and not going to get any better. The thing was you'd say make it red and go to bed, meaning the weather is just so horrible, you know, you're not going. So you know the red color, the no go, the make it red, go to bed. That's what we want to talk about first. So we're going to give you a little teaser of what we're going to be doing March 1st through the 15th. So excited, can't stand it. So there you go. We got our own no go buttons coming. And again we're going to give those away during the 15 days of celebration along with we're going to give away some top 10 checkride books. We are going to give away some helicopter checkride books and we just put in an order for a whole slew of T shirts. We're going to be giving away helicopter on land ground school shirts. So we've got sizes small all the way through 2 XL. They'll be limited, but we got a, got a nice shipment coming. So we'll be giving shirts away as well from March 1st through March 15th. And you know we're promoting helicopter safety as always. We're promoting the no go decisions when the weather's bad. The button thing I'm just so excited about and I just, I can't wait to get the first one. Heather's like, oh, I don't think you should tell people about it yet. Make it a surprise. I'm like, I can't stand it. I gotta start talking about it. That was easy. Gonna be cool. Okay, so alright, let's talk about the giveaways. The button. Alright, so next I'm gonna share something with you and we're gonna do a little test of what we're gonna do next week during our 15 days. I'm gonna do a video every single day. I'm gonna go live every day for 15 days from March 1st to March 15th. And we're gonna play some helicopter, and if it goes well, maybe we'll do it the whole 15 days. And I've been playing some trivia with some guys at my local hangout and we thought about this last night. We have written test practice with inside helicopter and ground school that our members use, and you test yourselves. So I thought, you know what? That's how I could do some fun trivia. And I'm going to share the screen with you and show you, make sure the audio is still good. Looks good. Here's what our test looks like. So we're going to do a little test here. We're going to do five questions and the first four just for practice. So we'll ask the question and then the first person to type in the right answer is the winner. So what is transverse flow effect? A. This is when the helicopter drifts to the right during takeoff at approximately 10 knots. This is when the helicopter drifts to the right during a hover due to the tail rotor thrust. This is when the main rotor system is clean and provides more lift. This is the airflow in relation to the cord line. So, Paul, good one. You got it. Paul got the first one. So we're going to do four more. On the fifth one, we're going to give away a copy of helicopter checkride, but just to tune you up here. So let's go to the next one. Let's mark that. Let me get my mouse over there. Which way do I go, Heather? I forget. There we go. All right, so let's mark that one. Hey, come on. There we go. All right, get ready, players. Next question. Why does the helicopter drift to the right at approximately 10 knots during takeoff? A gyroscopic precession. B, toe rotor thrust. C, effective translational lift. D to symmetry of lift. Who's the winter winner? What? I am, Paul. You got it, Paul. Man 2 In a row. You're knocking it out of the park. That is correct. Let's mark that. Let's go to the next one. Next question is, at what speed does the helicopter generally benefit from ETL, which is effective translational lift? Is it A, 10 knots, B, 30 knots, C, 16, 24 knots, D, 45 knots. Who's going to be the first to answer What? There you go. 16 and 24 knots. Nice job, Roy. He's got it. That's number three. Let's go. To the next one, question four, which most accurately describes the helicopter airport traffic pattern. Takeoff downwind base, final, upwind crosswind base, final taxi. Takeoff downwind, landing. Takeoff left traffic downwind final. Charlie, are you answering on this one? B. I am going to say B. So I believe Paul and Roy are right. I believe it's upwind, crosswind base and final. So there you go. Alright, get ready for the next one, kids, because the first person that types in the right answer is going to get helicopter checkride. So let's go to the next one. Get ready. Get ready on your keyboard. Who's gonna win? Let's go. What is etl Effective translational lift. This is when the entire rotor system is operating clean air and is more efficient. B the total loss of tail rotor authority. C, the helicopter settles in its own downwash and D, the retraining blade is stalled. Boom. Who was first? Paul G. Paul G. You got the book? You probably already got one because you're always logging in and doing stuff with us there, Paul, so you probably. Paul, do you have helicopter checkride? If you're. Because you're the winner. If you've already got it, do you have top 10 checkride tips? Because we could send you that instead. So there you go. So this is kind of fun. I think it's gonna be fun. He does have it. You do have it. Okay. Do you have top 10 checkride tips, Paul? And if you don't have that, we could send you a shirt because we know you're always here. Always here all the time. So let me go back to my camera. That is just again came up with it last night. We thought, you know what, this would be fun to. Oh, got both. Okay. Do you have a shirt, Paul? Because if you don't have a shirt, we can send you a shirt. So this is what we're going to be doing next week. And Heather too is like, well, don't you want to wait till next week? And I'm like, I'm so excited. I can't stand it. Let's go live and do this. She's staying a little bit later today because she came in later because of the bad weather this morning. So I'm like, I can't stand it. Let's go live and just give people a test to promote March 1 helicopter online ground school birthday March 1, 20208 years online. Couldn't have done it without all of you. I'm so freaking excited. And my birthday is March 15th. So I said we did this last year. We did a video every Day because we were doing the Coffee with Kenny series at that time. We did a video every day, we did some giveaways, offered specials for membership. And we're going to do the same thing again this year and we're going to beat it. By last year. We're going to go more off than ever before. And I haven't even figured out exactly what is, but I'm going to go back and check to make sure I set a new record on the biggest discount ever. And we're going to give away more giveaways than ever. We just tallied up what we've got, made an order and I'm like, all right, we're gonna give away more stuff in this 15 day round celebration than we've ever given away and we're gonna give away the biggest discounts we've ever freaking had. Okay. Talk about the discounts. Did that first through the 15th. Yep. And then Heather had me write down Instagram. Heather wants you to follow Instagram. She's been building up Instagram for the last year, year and a half. So, Heather, how do they find us at helicopter ground, is that it? If you haven't been checking us out on Instagram, help Heather out because she's been posting a lot of stuff in there, like I said, for probably a year, year and a half. You want to get some more people checking out the Instagram. She tries to post daily and even post something through the weekend. So check out our Instagram, check out our YouTube channel, which you're on right now, or if you're on Facebook, sorry, subscribe to the channel and click the bell. That way you'll be notified March 1st through March 15th of when we go live attend for the giveaways these questions we're asking right now from the private pilot course. So we're probably going to just do private pilot questions because we've been talking over and over about knowledge, right? Knowledge is key. And all the time people say, well, I just need the commercial, I don't need the private. Well, private's included with commercial. And Brian and I, and Taz and I, we all discuss this all the time. When you're going for your commercial, it's your basic private pilot knowledge on steroids. So you never overlook what you learned as a private pilot. Right. Everything you did at the private level, you do at the commercial level. But you just have to know it even better, more solid, more concrete. And then as a cfi, you have to be able to teach that material that you learned as a private. You honed as a commercial, then as a cfi, you're going to teach that stuff. So a basic kind of guy, right? And I'm. And that's why I love what I do with helicopter land ground school. I love the basics of training. It's just what I do. To me, it's all about the basics. That's how you be safe, is not get complacent, not get too cocky, studying, staying with it. And Brian discussed this at length. How many people fall behind their knowledge? Knowledge is power. Knowledge is key. Knowledge is how you keep yourself safe. So we're going to have some fun over the next couple weeks. You know, it's been a lot of accident stuff we've talked about in the past, and we will continue to do so through the. In the future because accidents are important to study what happened, learn what other mistakes people have made. How can we learn from those mistakes to move on? But I don't want to be the Accident Channel. You know, I'm getting a lot of requests for, hey, can I. You. Can you review this accident? Can you review that accident? And we'll do some more. But we don't want to scare everybody away because all we ever talk about is accidents. There's a lot of good stuff that goes on. Helicopters are fun and they are safe. If you fly them and you fly them the way you're intended to be flown or they're intended to be flown and you apply yourself and you try hard, they're safe. So the next two weeks, starting Sunday, is going to be fun stuff. Talking about the basics of training, doing the private pilot trivia stuff I think will be fun, and it gives everybody a chance over 15 days to win a book, win a T shirt, win when Hogs no go button. Heather thinks we should start calling y' all Hoggies. That Helicopter island ground school members should be called Hoggies. Are you a Hoggy? If you're not a Hoggy yet, go down below to helicopterground.com in the description box, click that link and sign up or wait till Monday and sign up when our big specials start. We'll announce those on Sunday when the celebration starts, because that would be March 1st. I'm gonna say it again. I can't believe it. Eight years later, man. I mean, it's just freaking amazing. And we're so thrilled with the freaking studio. And last night the weather was bad and I came in by myself and I just tore all the. You know, I've been building this studio, and pretty soon you get wires going everywhere. And I Just thought, you know what, take a break, it's quiet. Shut everything down, pull all these cords apart, make everything nice and clean and get ready for the next two weeks. And I have the best studio set up I've ever freaking had. And I'm so thankful that we're here eight years later and that you all stuck with us and it's just absolutely freaking amazing. Is there any questions I need to look at up there, Heather? Anybody got any questions I need to answer? Nope. Just a lot of haze and highs and everybody's excited. Happy birthdays. Awesome. Well, I'll probably. This is Thursday, right? I don't know if I'll do any videos between now and Sunday because we're getting ready but every day I want to do a video. I just, I love making videos and I love going live. I don't know why, it's just the thrill of just getting ready and just going. You know when you, when you make a video you got to edit and you got to, oh, I messed that up. And when you go live, you just got to go, man, you just got to do it. And that's why I like live because it's the idea of you just get going, you hit record or you hit live and you just roll and you just do it. Alright, I'm going to wrap it up so Heather and go home and I can move on. Thanks everybody for making comments today. Thanks for playing helicopter trivia and if I can, maybe we'll just try it through the whole 15 days and we'll do a section every day and get through the whole 100 questions of the private pilot so you can test your own knowledge, play against your friends, help refresh your knowledge and yeah, I think that's what we'll do. Awesome. Subscribe to channel. Click the bell so you'll be notified of the 15 days of fun. I said giveaways every single day. Books, T shirts, no go buttons. When they arrive. I asked them to put a rush order on today, see how fast I can get them here. Hopefully have them, I'm hoping the beginning of the middle next week and I hope they're going to come out cool. I should quit talking about it. But yeah, it's going to be badass and we want to start a trend. I want these buttons all over and not only we're going to give them away during the 15 day celebration, then after the celebration is over, we're probably, if we're happy with them and we like them, we're going to, I think send them out when People send us pictures for the Hogs Wall of Fame, I think, and we'll do it while supplies last and see how they go. I think we ordered 50 of them. So we'll give a bunch away first two weeks of March and then we'll see you there. Where we want to start a movement. We want people to make the right decisions. We want people to have the guts to go, well, there's just. I just don't feel good about it in my gut. I'm not going. Sorry, I'm not taking that flight. That was easy. Boom. And we're going to look at some magnets. We were looking at magnets. We've got something we designed. Swear to God. One more thing. I'll show you. We're going to do a better design. We made these a while back. You got one over here, Heather. And these are kind of small, but something that I've been wanting to make for years. And we're going to. I'm going to. After Heather takes so long, I'm going to look at trying to build something like this. But I want a refrigerator magnet and we made some small ones like this. But this is the stuff we want you to think about before you even leave the house, you know, or even think about the night before when you're getting ready to go fly so you're at home. I want a refrigerator magnet so you can stick it on the refrigerator at home or on your metal wall to hanger or whatever. And what we have on here is first medical certificate, is it in your wallet? Is it valid? Pilot certificate, is it in your wallet? Are you current? Driver's license? Your photo id, is it in your wallet? Currency for passengers. Are you going by yourself? Are you taking friends or family? Are you going to go do a commercial job? Am I current for night? Am I current for passengers? Current flight review. When was your flight review? Was it a year ago? Was it 26 months ago? And you're not even current at the moment. The I'm safe checklist, illness, medication and then that list. VFR weather along the route. Checking your weather the night before, Checking the weather at home before you even leave the house. So you have an idea driving to the airport, you're already have an idea what the weather is. You've looked when you're driving to the airport, you can be looking and going, okay, yeah, they were reporting 10 miles and 5,000ft. And hey, it looks like that today. Or they reported that and you're driving the airport going, wow, they said 10 miles. And this is like four. Okay. Then you know something's up. You know, the forecast might be off. So many times the weather. How do I put this? You'll hear. You listen to the ADIs and it says 5 miles visibility. You get up in the helicopter and you go, this ain't no five miles. This is two and a half at best. So you're thinking about that on the way to the airport and then a few other things, you know, and it's going to be something that's quick to go through. But all the things I want you to think about when you're at home getting ready to leave the house. So we're going to try to see if we can get some of those made for this giveaway and hopefully get them here before the end because I'd love to give some of those away too, because hogs is what it is and we've done our best to make people try to be smart and safe. So with our refrigerator magnet that you can look at going through your mind before you leave home, your no go button when the weather's bad. That was easy. And the last note, again, I see so much on social media. Oh, we got to have all your aircraft equipped with this and oh, everybody's got to be IFR certified and oh, everybody's got to do this and that when all those things are great. But let's back up for a minute. Why are we not all going, no go, no go, no go. Stay on the ground. It should be you're making that decision to not fly so that you're not getting yourself into the position where you have to go inadvertent IMC and you have to claim an emergency or you don't, you try to fly yourself out of it and you fly into the side of a mountain or whatever the case is. So. All right. Swear to God, going to wrap it up. Anything I need to answer? No. All right, subscribe. Give us the thumbs up button on that little down below where it has a thumbs up, click that, make a comment down below and we'll see you Sunday. That was easy. Hell yeah. Peace out.
