New CFI looking for first Helicopter Pilot Job

Jeffrey Salon, a newly certified flight instructor, talks with Kenny Keller about landing his first helicopter CFI job. He discusses market demand for instructors, why experience on multiple aircraft like the R22, R44, and Cabri matters, and what makes a CFI more hireable.

All right. Hey, Ken with helicopter on ground school here with Jeffrey Salon, longtime Hogs member, emailed me last night. Was going to be through the area actually doing some training at suite suite with the cavalry. And so he came by today. So we're going to have him sign his picture for the Hogs Wall of Fame. It was already up there, but we took it down so he could sign it. So we're going to do that first. What I do with that marker I just grabbed for you? Here it is. Let me get my phone out because I want to video you signing that. So we're also going to get present him his Hogs no go button because we promised him a shirt but never a no go button. So his last time he sent us a checkride picture I guess was before we got started with the no go buttons. Just gave him his shirt. So he's got his shirt. Somehow I'm gonna have to get on Heather and say how do we never get him his shirt? What happened? What happened in the pipeline? Here I am ready. Go ahead and sign it. Sign your name on there, Jeffrey. So he is signing his picture that will go back up on the Hogs Wall of Fame. We've been here hanging out and just shooting the breeze about helicopter flying and all kinds of stuff. Gave him a couple books to take home with him. And the good old no go button. We send these out to members once they get their picture up on the Hogs Wall of Fame. And you got what two more pictures just sent us?
I can send you? Yeah.
So he's. He's on the Hogs Wall times one. He'll be on the Hogs wall times three. So there is your no go button.
Thank you.
If you want to pull that dude out and turn it on, make sure it works.
All right.
So the idea behind the no go button, if you're new to our videos, pilots have to make good decisions. Live to fly another day helicopterground.com live to fly another day.
Thank you.
There you go. So now he is a CFI getting ready to get his start in the world. And one of our topics of discussion today was I recently talked with our insurance guy who's been insuring helicopters for over 30 years. And he said directly to me, flight schools are busy and they're getting reports that they do not have enough flight instructors. We've spent a lot of time today talking about a lot of different stuff and he's very conservative and is asking a lot of really, really good questions. So I asked him to speak to the camera Today and to our HOGS audience with whatever he wanted to talk about, I said, I don't even. Just whatever you want to say, if anything. So anybody looking for a fresh cfi, looking to get a start? Here is one. You want to add anything to that? Sure.
So I guess coming here today, well, coming to Indiana and training and everything, I guess reiterates why I got into the industry in general, is you're constantly learning, always doing things. But Kenny here, thanks for seeing me.
Not probably. We worked out today. We're doing new illustrations. We've been at it every day, and today my illustrator's like, hey, I want to go visit an old buddy. And is that all right? It just so happened that last minute Jeffrey asked if he could swing by, and I'm like, well, it actually works. Because we would have been illustrating all day. And we thought about a quick visit, but turns out we've had several hours to hang out and catch up on what's going on in the helicopter world and what it's like as a new CFI trying to get a start in the industry.
Yeah, so that is exactly. It's, like, refreshing to actually talk to you and learn some of the experiences, the nuances and everything. And I'm thinking about trying to get a job as an instructor, and we'll talk about that. And I think that's exactly what I got in the industry for, is one, connections, and then two is to learn, grow, and then be able to, you know, work on your weaknesses and capitalize on your strengths and everything. And that's another reason why, you know, I asked you for these books, even though I got done with my Chuck Ride, you know, you can still learn information and pull things out from it and everything. So, I mean, this has been an awesome week. It's been an awesome opportunity talking with Kenny, and I really appreciate the opportunity. So thank you. I appreciate it.
Well, thanks for coming. I appreciate you being here. So we just want to share that little bit of, you know, you're. I think Jeffrey's the fourth person to sign the HOGS Wall of Fame. We got Dave Faulkner, Jason Cutter, and, I think, one other up there. So Jeffrey's gonna be, like, the fourth person to actually visit the HOGS studio and go up on the Wall of Fame. So do you want to add any information to today that someone could contact you if they're looking for a cfi?
Yeah, I can give you that information. I guess it'd be better just writing it down or putting in the video, maybe.
Okay. Yeah, we can put in the description below the video. And then if you get flooded with calls and too many offers for jobs, I'll go in there and just remove your info so they'll quit bothering you.
Yeah, but I am interested, and I'm getting experience of the cabaret, which I'm doing that on purpose, so then I can be competitive. If there's cabbage jobs out there that's up and coming, that aircraft's up and coming. So I figured I'd identify that as an opportunity to learn and get a new system under my belt.
Yes. And you got a bunch of Robinson time, too, correct? Yes. So you're gonna be. You're gonna. He told me he's extensively. Not extensively. That's why he's flying the Cadbury, to make sure he. He wants to go above and beyond just the five hours minimum, which is a great idea. He wants to get well versed in it so that he can say, yeah, I got more than five. I got, you know, whatever. And he wants to be super comfortable in it. So I'd say pretty marketable. With your R22 and R44 time, you got time in both, right?
Yep.
You got time in both of those and cavity time on top of that.
Yeah, but I don't have the S4 with the 22, but just the 44.
Sure.
Yeah.
So if you. You'll. You can get there, though. You've got experience flying both, so it wouldn't be that much difficult to get the other SFAR sign off. Yeah, you can get it done.
No, and. And learning new aircraft systems, I mean, that's all part of. It's very humbling.
Right.
Like we were talking about. And I think that's all part of the learning opportunity. So.
Yeah, I think that's probably one big thing that we talked about today that just for anybody trying to get into this, when you jump around and get experiences in different helicopters, different instructors, different flight schools, different parts of the country or different parts of the world, it really helps round you as an instructor, and it also opens you up to be more marketable when, if, say, you only fly one aircraft for all your ratings, then you have to go to. You can only go to schools that have that helicopter because you got to get the five hours at minimum. And if you're brand new, you've already spent $100,000 getting your training, and now you got to go get more time in other aircraft. So splitting it up can really, really be a great idea. So.
Yeah.
All right, well, I think we'll wrap it up. Thanks again. For coming today. Enjoy your Hogs T shirt, your no Go button and their books. Thanks for signing the Hogs Wall of the. Good luck in your career and I hope you get a whole bunch of phone calls or emails from this video today and nothing more than you to call me a month from now and go, dude, I got hired at such and such and I'm flying this and it will happen and you'll be excited and there'll be a point where you'll email me or call and say, dude, I got a job. For sure it will happen.
Yeah.
So thanks for tuning in and we'll see you all in the next video. Peace out. Right now, there's no better way to learn all the knowledge to get through your helicopter rating than using a step by step course. If you're here, it's because you're looking for additional help to sift through this great big pile of books in front of you or a bunch of apps you have downloaded to your tablet or your smartphone. There is a ton of ways to study, but unless someone's walking you through it step by step, it can be very difficult to learn. So if you're trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B, which is the license in your pocket to go out and have fun, you are in the right place and we can definitely help you. We've helped more people than probably anybody you'll ever meet, mainly because we've been doing it for a long time and helping a lot of people. And you can see those on the wall behind me, what we call the Hogs Wall of Fame. Those are our past customers and members that have passed their test and have their license, whichever one they were going after. Your time is valuable, so I'm going to get right to the point. We have several options for membership with our Helicopter Line Ground School to help you get through private commercial instruments, cfi, Professional Pilot, whatever it is that you're going for, we have something that can help you get through the training that you're going after. Somewhere on this page there's a button where you can book a call to speak with our team and we can evaluate you, see where you're at, and come up with a special plan for you. This is what we do is the ground knowledge. What we don't do is we don't train you in the aircraft, we don't issue you the test. If you're brand new to helicopter training and don't know anything and you haven't even started yet, we can still help you but you have to get a plan in motion on where you're actually going to fly and what aircraft you're going to fly. There's a lot of questions there and we can help you with that. You can use our training basically from anywhere in the world and you can pick the flight school of your choice, flying the helicopter, that can be done anywhere. And then you'll end up taking your test with an FAA designated examiner, usually somewhere very near the school that you're doing your flight, actual flight training with. So that's not what we do here. We help you with the knowledge and I can tell you, 75% of the work to get this helicopter license is knowledge. 25% of it is actually flying the helicopter. And if you're brand new to this, that might sound kind of funny to you, but it's almost like a college course with the amount of information you have to know to become a helicopter pilot. There's a lot there, trust me, there's a lot to learn. A majority of the time, the people that we're working with have usually already started flying and start a little bit of the book work and then they've quickly realized that, wow, this is a mountain of information. Some flight schools do a really good job at training you and helping you with that ground knowledge. So some of our members like to just have the additional benefit of our online courses and our online training. Some flight schools just throw the books at you and say, here's the book, read it. And that's unfortunately the reality of what goes on in the industry. That's why we created Helicopter Land Ground School is to get people through the knowledge. Because the knowledge is the hard part. I'm telling you. We spend a lot more time studying and learning and talking about flying than what we actually do flying, at least in the beginning, until you get further into your career where you're flying all the time. So the first thing we're going to do for you is give you like a 10 minute call, see where you're at, evaluate where you want to go with your training, whether you're just going for private pilot or you're going for a professional career. And then if you like, we'll set up another call, a discovery call, where we go a little more in depth, come up with a plan and present to you what we think we can do to help you pursue this helicopter rating and get through this training and get to the end result, which is that license in your hand. We help people from all over the world and all walks of life. For people just starting out to guys like Jamie Cobb, one of the members up on our wall. Jamie had 200 hours in a helicopter that he owned. He'd had eight different instructors and called us up because he was frustrated, because after two years and all that time and money and he still wasn't done. And with Jamie, we worked out a special program where we brought him his helicopter up here after he did our online training, got his knowledge prepared, came up here. In nine days, we had him finished up and is on his way back home to Texas. Everybody's got a story, everybody's got a struggle. You can see them all along the Hogs Wall of Fame. This is what we do, help people get the helicopter rating. So I have no doubt that me and my team can help you at whatever stage you're at. Somewhere on this page there's a book a call button. So go ahead, book a call and we'll get started and we'll figure out where you're at, evaluate you, present you a plan, and if nothing else, if you decide not to move forward, you're at least going to get some free information from us. But I want to guarantee you that we can help you. And if you're looking for that, just an online course to help supplement your knowledge, you're looking on a custom one on one program built specifically to help get you through, depending on what your struggle is. For example, like the one I mentioned just a minute ago, Jamie, you know those horror stories are out there. I really encourage you to book a call with us. Let's have a chat, see where you're at, and we'll go from there. Thanks for checking out this video. Click that link and have a great day.
