Instructor Kenny Keller introduces the non-towered airport radio communications segment, briefly praises and announces improvements to his new online ground school site (saying he has worked on the site for three months), and gives a concrete radio-communications tip for helicopter pattern work: always use the word “helicopter” in your calls, give the full call sign the first time each day (e.g., "November 8626 Papa, Helicopter"), then you may abbreviate afterward but still include the word “helicopter” (e.g., "Helicopter two six Papa"). He encourages viewers to explore other categories and leave comments.

Hello members, welcome to the radio communications non towered airport section. I'm going to give you a tip here in a minute about call signs, but first I want to tell you that I'm loving this new site. Please let me know if you are catching any of the videos or seeing any of the changes. I've been working on this for three months now and this new site has completely and entirely exceeded my expectations. I knew it would be cool, but just the way that it works, the way it operates in the back end allows me to do so much more, so much faster, which ultimately is good for you all the members because I can produce faster, produce more and it's just so absolutely cool. I can't even believe it. So thanks all of you who have upgraded thanks of you that are brand new members to the new online ground school. Just know that there's plenty more new cool stuff on the way. So a pattern or a tip for pattern work, we always use helicopter. So like the first call of the day, November 8626 Papa. Helicopter, November 8626 Papa. That's how you start your call, whether it's a towered or non towered, either way. And then we abbreviate. After we use our first full call sign of the day, we can then abbreviate. And I would do something like helicopter to 6 Papa. What I want to say is you always use helicopter. And the reason is, if you'll notice, this is November 8626 Papa. There's a aircraft over here, happens to be a helicopter, but it's November 2686 Papa. Or I'm sorry it's not Papa, but it's November 2686. So that could easily be on the side of an airplane. So my point is, I have been in a pattern many, many times, towered and non tower doesn't matter. And you'll hear somebody say, you know, 86 papa turning base, not even using, right, it should be helicopter two six. Because then everybody knows who we are and we know who we're looking for. And you'll hear airplanes do the same thing. You'll say you'll hear a six Papa turning left base. Well, is it an airplane? Is it a Cessna? Is it a helicopter? What is it? So I recommend always using helicopter even when you're abbreviating helicopter 26 papa. That way when other traffic is looking for you, no matter who they are or where they are, they know who you are. So you know if the other aircraft fixed wing are getting confused. At least they know they're looking for a helicopter when you're making your call. So go on, investigate the other categories inside this section and put your comments down below and let me know what you're thinking and we'll see you in the next video.
