One Of The Best Kept "Weather Secrets" In Aviation

Recorded FAA FAST Team webinar (YouTube) presented by Kenny Keller and Rex Alexander demonstrating the HEMS Weather Tool. The presentation gives the tool's origin (conceived March 2006, released November 2006), developer credits (NCAR/UCAR/Research Applications Laboratory), and primary purpose—supplementary, gridded ceiling/visibility assessments to increase situational awareness for operations at or below 5,000 ft (originally aimed at Helicopter Emergency Medical Services to reduce CFIT, inadvertent IMC and loss-of-control accidents). The video includes a guided live demo of the HTML5 HEMS interface (layers: flight category, ceilings, visibility, radar, satellite, icing, temperature, humidity, wind; overlays: METARs/TAFs, PIREPs, SIGMETs/AIRMETs, airports, VORs, terrain, roads), customization and saving of views, time-slider/radar looping, and feedback/contact procedures. Presenters stress that HEMS is a supplementary product (use METARs/TAFs as primary sources) and note ongoing development (mobile/app ideas and future trials).
