Preparing to ferry The Enstrom back to the HOGS Hangar

Kenny Keller narrates preparations for a cross‑country ferry flight to Ohio to pick up an Enstrom helicopter (the instrument) and bring it back to the HOGS hangar in Warsaw. He reviews required paperwork and currency (license, medical, recent flight review), describes maintenance and logbook checks with a mechanic (rotor system reassembly, new transponder/ADSB), and lists practical items to pack (layered clothing, boots, gloves, camera gear, iPad). He also outlines plans to integrate the instrument into the HOG studio and produce more hangar-based videos; the trip is planned as a one‑day ferry, meeting the mechanic at 8:00 AM, weather and maintenance permitting.

Alright, gonna do something different tonight. Getting ready for a cross country trip. Going out to Ohio to get the instrument, bring it back to our hangar here at Warsaw. So I thought just for fun, do a few videos throughout the trip. Hopefully this trip is totally boring. Because if it's totally boring, that means everything went smooth and safe and no surprises and it's just a matter of going to point or point A to point B and then back to point C. So hopefully this whole trip's going to be boring. But anyway, what I want to cover is the kind of things that you got to think about when you're getting ready to go. Right. So number one right here. License. Yep, it's in here. Medical. Yep, it's in here. A couple different forms of payment so I can buy fuel along the way, hotels, anything that might happen, be prepared. Right. Should be a one day trip. Driving out tonight, getting a hotel, meeting the mechanic in the morning at 8am it has a fresh annual, the rotor system's been apart and has some updates to the rotor system, new transponder and ADBS system or whatever you say, ADSB all installed. So I'm gonna be checking all that out. So tomorrow morning we'll be meet that mechanic at 8am so we're gonna drive out tonight, get a room, take in the jeep, got my gear in the car, gonna move it to the jeep here to double check that I have everything they need. So starting off, license, medical. Am I current? I know in my head I'm current because I did a flight review with Chris Hauser. When I did that video on the Cabry that day we did a full hour flight so that we could not only give me an intro to the Cabry but we could cover autos and all the things that you would normally do during a flight review. And we did some ground. So Chris signed me on for my flight review just this past late summer, early fall. So I know I'm good on the flight review. As far as the aircraft picking it up, I'm going to be there with the mechanic. Right. So the log books are there. The mechanic will go through everything that he's done on it since it's been there and we're going to go out and track it because he's just putting the rotor system back together. So of course we're going to track it, make sure it's nice and smooth and because they've changed some parts in the rotor system, we're going to make sure that it flies okay and that the collector is not too light which Was a little heavy before, so it may now be just perfect. But that way he can put any last minute touches on it. I can check the log books, get those loaded up with me, and if everything's good, my buddy that's going with me can bring the jeep back home and, and I'll head home tomorrow, weather permitting, maintenance, all good, should be good to go. And there he comes in right now. So the things that you take along with you, it's gonna be 30ish tomorrow, 20s at night. So you got to think about clothing. I've got a light jacket here, got my hogs, hoodie, a couple extra shirts. So in the event I had to land in some swampy area because believe it or not, northern Ohio, there are some areas that are really wet, big open areas, and if I had to set down somewhere on the way home, let's say I came late in the day, I might be stuck out in the field for considerable amount of time if I had to land somewhere. So with layered clothing, you know, a hoodie, light jacket, a couple shirts, big pair of boots. And I want you to think about this because I've had people over the years, you're going on a cross country flight and they show up with one light jacket and you go, well hey, where's your extra clothing? Oh well, we're just doing such and such flight, we'll be back, it's not going to get cold till tonight, we'll be good. I'm like, yeah, but what if, what if we have problems along the way? What if we stop for fuel somewhere and the aircraft don't start and it's late in the day and there's nobody there to help us. So over the years I've always said, go grab your clothes. And in 2014 we brought a jet Ranger back in the wintertime New Hampshire to Indiana and I about froze to death because the heater sucked in that aircraft and I wasn't wearing proper shoes. And this is a fun story because after I got back, after freezing all the way home, went out to Walmart, spent 35 bucks and got them boots. So I've been wearing these on cross country trips and other things. 35 bucks at Walmart. They've lasted me since 2014. Got nice big thick socks. So the layered clothing, I got everything I need for the trip back. So I packed up my bags at home. I'll check them again when I go moving them over to the Jeep here. When we get ready to take off, wave the camera, Jimmy. So what do we got here? There's a hoodie for Jimmy. So extra clothes. I'm planning on being gone one day. What do I do? I take clothes for three days. Because you just don't know. You end up having problems with the maintenance. You end up getting stuck for weather somewhere. Always nice to have extra clothes. One thing I gotta stop and get is a pair of gloves. Just some cheapy work gloves. Gonna stop at a gas station. We need to fill the jeep up anyway. Got my normal camera equipment that I take with me. Hopefully we can do some videos for you. And yeah, so the normal stuff that you take with you. So I'm thinking about all that stuff. IPad, iPads in the bag. We're taking that so we can monkey around with new navigation equipment because it's supposed to be really cool. Sends out a WI fi and does all these cool things that I'm gonna exterior experience for the first time. So the other thing I wanted to tell you was we rearranged the studio in the last couple videos, you may notice, but. So when the instrument comes back, we arranged the whole deal. Right. So the instrument will be part of the HOG studio. So I kind of guesstimated everything when I moved it all around, but. And of course once we get it back, we'll get it all set up and kind of figure out what works. But what's going to be fun is a lot of people liked it before when we were had the instrument here and we were doing videos once we got to the hangar. Now we got the HOGS wall all looking good. So we'll have everything set up. So a daily video or training videos, new videos we produce for helicopter line ground school. We'll have our desk over there as normal. But it'd be very easy to just, you know, be presenting at the desk. Using the TV screen to present different things, slides and animation, so forth. But then also just a quick move of the camera or another camera that's set up. Oh, you want to talk about rotor blades. Oh, okay. Boom. Walk over the helicopter. Oh, you want to talk about the tail rotor. Over the tail rotor. So we'll get all the cameras set up nice and neat so that we can, you know, easily move things around and be able to do some different stuff for you. And I know, I remember said before the few videos we did last spring and early summer, they enjoyed having the helicopter right there with the videos. Right. And it just makes it handy. At our other hangar we had to like we're upstairs and if we wanted to shoot video, you gotta haul all the equipment downstairs, make the video. Hopefully there's not some other noise or something going on in the hangar. Now that we're all here at the HOGS hangar, it's nice and quiet. Nobody here but us. We can have the camera set up so it's not a hassle anymore to go down and shoot with the helicopter. We can just, at any moment in time, go boom, hit the cameras and roll. So we're gonna load up the jeep with all the gear, try to think of anything I might have forgot last minute, and we're gonna head out to Ohio, so we'll keep you informed. Let's hope for a boring trip. We'll see what happens. See you next video.
