Private Pilot Testing Final Thoughts by Captain Keller

Captain Keller says there's no shortcut to a private pilot certificate: you need consistent effort and repetition. Master aerodynamics and emergency procedures, study the Jeppesen manual and FAR/AIM, and know your aircraft's POH. Brad's advice on these two areas is what separates passing from retesting.

Have some fun. I sat down, jot out some notes about what I wanted to talk to in this last video or what I want to talk about. Everybody remember Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy. That's why we're having fun with the title today. Whatever. We put Final thoughts with Captain Color. It's a joke. We're having fun. Here's the one book that I've only mentioned in the last series of videos. I've only mentioned a couple times. I grabbed a copy just so we can kind of hit that a little bit. The other book that I haven't mentioned is the Private Pilot Manual, which is one that I really like and I used for all my ratings and I'll still occasionally pull it out and use it when I'm building presentations and looking stuff up. I really like that book. So in this series of videos, we've talked about a whole ton of stuff. And the videos we put out today, one was with the examiner. You saw his picture that we started with. Very simply, you've now heard from the examiner. If you didn't catch that video, it's on YouTube. We sent out an email with a link to it. It's on YouTube. It's the examiner tips. I went through and put them all together, cut out all the extra mumbo jumbo. It's the meat straight from a helicopter. Examiner and Tips. Right, because everybody says that. And quite honestly, I get annoyed. That's part of the fun of the video that we put out earlier where we're screwing around and trying to have some fun. You know, recently we had some helicopters here, and the guy that was owned him was a, you know, professional pilot. And we had a CFI here. And one day he's like, oh, hey, I want you to fly with the examiner. See what he's looking for. Same examiner you saw in the video today? Same examiner that I worked with and helped him do a CFI years ago. Anyway, I was annoyed because it's like. And the examiner even says in the video, he's kind of a pet peeve when someone says, well, what should I have my students study? Okay, see where I'm going with that? You'll hear it from the examiner. And I'm not going to say the words because in the last video I said, I'm not saying these words anymore. If you've never seen one of my videos, you might not know, but otherwise you ought to know. The three letters examiner says it in the video. That's where it's all at. So had a good conversation today with a HOGS member who called up, he wanted the study guide. And he said, hey, can I talk to Kenny? And I happened to be in between doing something and I grabbed the phone and had a good conversation. It's cool to talk to members like that, right? And he said, man, I gotta tell you, you know, I struggle reading and the videos are perfect for me. And then he went on to tell me how he studies with another person who doesn't use hogs and this other student only likes to read. This student doesn't want to watch any videos. And I said, that's cool, right? That's how or everybody learns differently. Whether you're going to use videos or you want to sit and read it all by yourself, or you want to do it all fed on one on one with an instructor, or you want to use a multitude of both, you have to learn the information, okay? So I like that he said he for him specifically, he wants videos. And he goes, you've helped me get through this. And again, his partner that's studying together, partner loves to just read. And that's all that person wants. And I went, great. Because you know what? Years ago, about seven or eight years ago, I had a guy refund. Hey, Kenny, you know, I want to get a refund because I watching your videos, I realized I can learn all this stuff myself by just reading the books. And I refunded him and said, yeah, absolutely, anybody can. You can sit if you want to read. You can do all this on your own. It's about how you want to learn. How do you want to do it? And the thing that he said to me that I like that I've been saying in the past series of videos, repetition. He said it, well, I learned through repetition, you know, going through it and going through it. And I was like, yes, great, you're right. Repetition. That's how we learn. We learn by going over it and over it and over it and over it. Absolutely. I love that he said that. And he said he's been through every HOGS video on the private pilot three times. And I said, great, because you know what? The people that ACE Checkrides like, people you see on the wall behind me, that's what they tell us. And yeah, it's a lot of work. But guess what, people, It's a lot of work. They say, I've been through every video at least once, if not two or three times. For people that sincerely ACE Checkrides. And I've said it in past videos. We have examiners emailing us. Then they're saying it's accepted. You know, we're now in college courses and examiners are saying our students do well. When we say, what did they do to prepare? They said they used hogs. Okay, I'm just telling you how it is. So in my notes, this is what I wrote down. I sat down on the couch and thought, what do I want to talk about today to wrap this up? And I've been thinking about this for two weeks and I've been breaking it up, trying to different things get you to think, show you the different tools, show you what to study. But here's my real honest opinion. There is no easy route. There is no easy way to private pilot. If somebody says there is, then maybe they, you know, they're exceptional. They have a photographic memory and they just breeze through a private pilot. I'm sure there's people that do, but the average person doesn't, doesn't do that. And this member was going, God, there's kidding. There's so much to learn. And I said, I know there's a ton to learn. And that's why I say, sorry to say, in my opinion, there's no easy route. So for two weeks, as I've been doing these videos, I'm trying to think everything right. What can I do? What can I do? What can I do? And then the last couple days, I just got to the point where I can't do it. This is a series of nine or 10 videos, but I can't get you ready. I can guide you, I can help the thought process. I've given you all the tools, I've named them all with exception of one or two that I just mentioned. Beginning of video that we're going to hit in just a minute. And the reason I wrote this down, I put story about Brad, aerodynamics and emergencies. Okay, very important. Listen to me closely. You already know. I failed the first private pilot test. I'm getting tired of talking about it. And I'm getting tired of talking about study guide. So not talking about those. I remember Brad when I was prepping for the private to go back the second time around. I remember being in the hotel room and thinking about what Brad told me. And he said, kenny, it's aerodynamics and emergencies. You gotta know those through and through. You gotta know aerodynamics, and you have to go, you have to know emergencies. And I didn't dive deep into those in the videos because there is so much to those. And guess what? It's all inside. Helicopter, land, ground, school. It's all there So I said, I'm not gonna make a bunch more videos asking a bunch of questions because it's so big. Like the other things I've touched on. Just touched on things to see how well you could answer a question. I remember Brad going, aerodynamics and emergencies, man. And the poh. Go through that POH over and over and over. Study that POH and know those emergencies so well that you'll never forget them. That's how I aced my second checkride, Aerodynamics and emergencies. Okay. I remember him saying that. So that's where you're going to get these. We do have R22 specific training in sight hogs. We have R44 specific. We have entrance specific. But you know what? Buttons and switches are different. Places and speeds might be different in an auto, but in general, helicopter emergencies are pretty much the same. They might vary a little bit from one to another, but when you get really steady and you learn different aircraft, you realize emergencies in general are pretty close. Like I said, you might have a few things, but that's why you got to know specific to your aircraft. If you don't have a copy of this for the aircraft you're flying, I highly recommend you spend the money and get one. Go online and buy it. Buy your own copy. That's what I did. That's what Brad got me to do all those years ago. And I'm glad I did because that's one of your tools that you need to have at home with you in your bag or whatever. Digital copy, paper copy, I don't care. You need a copy of the poh and you need to be good with it. You need to go through it. You need to understand the chapters. When the examiner asks you, hey, something specific on an aircraft, at least if you know, oh, well, that's in section two. Oh, that's in section five. And you can quickly go there. Examiner's going to be impressed. You don't have to know every single thing. Like the examiner said in the video I was talking about. He's like, I don't care if you know the exact temperature for oil temp. I want to know that you know the red line. That's what's important. Where's the red line at? That's what you got to understand. So Brad, the one I'm talking about to help me pass my second time in Ace, he's also the one that gave me the far aim tip and I'll hit far aim one more time. He's the one that showed me that study guide originally that's in the beginning of the FAR aim. He's the one that helped me retest and pass an ace. And that's the biggest thing. Sitting on the couch today thinking about this is the biggest things that helped me get through was Brad saying he was a cool kid, man, we had a lot of fun. He was like, Kenny, aerodynamics and emergencies, man, you got to know those. And you got to know it through and through and you just. You got to be good on it. So go back to your hotel room and just keep studying that stuff. And I'll never forget it. I'll never forget it. And I had the vision of the FAR AIM back at the hotel, studying through it and the vision of Brad saying those. So there's the last two big ones or a couple big ones. And the other one I haven't talked about is the Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual. I love that book. There's tons of resources out there, right? And I don't keep up on everybody's courses and what books are out there. I'm sure there's lots of wonderful stuff out there. I used the Private Pilot Manual by Jebbeson. The great big thick book. I love that book. When you open it today, it's still really relevant. There's a lot of really good stuff in there. That was my other tool that I used for all my ratings. And as I said, I still go back occasionally and I reference that, so covered that one. I'll mention again the examiner tips. It's a great video. It's about 20 minutes and I just. I cut it. So you're hearing from a designated pilot examiner telling you about what to do and how to prepare and how to be ready, I'm down to thank. You gotta thank anybody that comes along and watches one of these videos that's ever made a comment or given us a like or joined hogs or left hogs or refunded from hogs or had any kind of interaction with us at all. That's how we've got where we're at. Because this is my life. That's my last note. This is my life. This is what I do. That's it 24 7. I dream about this stuff. Why? I don't know. And it's even annoying at times. I'm at home dreaming about presentation building and offers and the whole ball of wax. It's un. It's freaking crazy. So anyway, there's a lot of things to know for the private pilot. And if you think. If you're looking for an easy way, an easy way out there is none. You got to put in the time, you got to put in the effort. And I really recommend you sign up for hugs. I'll put a link down with a Below this video for helicopterground.com we have private pilot, commercial instrument CFI. We have test 24 hour test flight on any membership. You can sign up, not be billed for 24 hours. Check it out if it's right for you, you continue on, you get billed monthly. Cancel anytime, come back anytime, as many times as you need. And they do it. These people on the wall, they sign up, do the private, take a break. They come back a few months later. Hey Kenny, I'm back, I'm working on my instrument or hey, I'm back working on my commercial. And then they unsubscribe, then they come back to work on the cfi. Life happens, things get in the way, you run out of money, anything can happen. You can come and go with those 24 hour test flight as many times as needed, which is wonderful. And then we have some other options too and we change, we change up offers, you know, month to month holiday time. We're always changing things up a little bit. So go to helicopterground.com as I'm making this video. There's only monthlies on there but we're going to have some other specials coming up and there's always kind of a special, some kind of special running. Get a hold of Heather if you have a question. 574-767-1797 but I just wanted to end with the big picture of studying, getting the rating ratings. It's 25% of the works, flying the helicopter, 75%'s working and learning, all the knowledge and you know, it doesn't matter, I don't care how you do it, you know, you can do it however you want. And I wasn't offended when this member said, well my friend, my friend just wants to study and read the books. They don't like video, don't want to watch video. I'm like that's great. Not everybody's going to be a customer of hogs. Not everybody's going to enjoy our sense of humor, our way of teaching. But it has worked for going on 11 years and we have a 24 hour money back guarantee on any membership that we have. So I don't know why if you're thinking about jumping on the board, I don't know why you don't because it's really that simple. And I'm just tired. Been talking A lot. Been working hard on these videos. Almost to the wore myself out to the point of going, you know, I can't do this for you. I can guide you, I can help you. That's it. So you know what, Heather's over there, been chatting with you guys. I just didn't want to bring this in until I kind of covered everything. We're giving away one year membership to private pilot and this is open to if you're a current member, play. We'll end your subscription for you and give you the full year. Or if you're new to Hogs, first time on this video. This is live so you can't play in the comments down below. Later on this video airs. So we asked a simple question. The email video two, which was step two, which is our fun video where I was throwing stuff around and kicking trash cans and goofing off. I talked about the Hogs Wall of Fame and I said I used two numbers and one of them was a goofy. Heather knows the right number and you hear in the video where she says what is it? And she tells the number. So the first person to type in chat the number of people currently on the Hogs Wall of Fame right now behind me as of this date, the night before Thanksgiving, 2022. Hate to date videos but just so you know, type in chat the number of Hogs members currently. Not the number that I miss spoke but when Heather says it's this number, what is that number? Anybody playing over there? Heather? Not yet. Anybody in chat?
Only a couple people.
Hey, if you're in chat, you got a. You got a good chance. I don't know how to hang along. Any questions I can answer? No. Alright, well what else should I talk about? Heather? What have I missed while we're waiting to see if there's two people watching?
You got Terry's favorite thing to eat, his stuffing and Mark Schmidt favorite thing is canned cranberries.
All right. Okay everybody. Everybody's talking about what they're gonna eat tomorrow and that's fine because I'm hungry and thinking about tomorrow too. So you know what, maybe I should wrap this video up. Let me talk about. We have some other memberships like yearlies, professionals that aren't always on the website. You can always text or call Heather at any time at 574-767-1797. You can also reach out to hog supportupportelicopterground.com and we'll hook you up, we'll get you a membership and here's a bonus because you're the end of the video. Heather's authorized to give out a discount anytime somebody gets a hold of her. If you take the time to reach out to us, she's always got a code to throw out there. She has her own private code that she can toss out there. So if you're thinking about signing up, I think you need to do it. Got a winner yet? Oh, my God. What else can I talk about? There's got to be something. There's only three people. All right. Well, I guess nobody wins. It would have been a simple thing to go find out that number.
I don't know, but thanks for everything.
Thank you. All right. I don't know what else to give you. That's it. There's a lot to it. I've given you all the tools. I've told you what to study, I've told you what not to do. Balls in your court, and we're to help you out. So I say, Heather, get ready to end it. And we'll end in 3, 2, 1.
Peace out.
