Quick Stops Before Autorotation Practice???

Kenny Keller teaches quick stops, the flaring technique you'll use in autorotations. He walks through coordinated pedal, collective, and cyclic inputs to bleed off speed, then level and raise collective to settle. Quick stops are the core skill for safe autorotation landings.
1, 2, 3, quick stop down collective right pedal, half cyclic. I'm going to start that flare and I'm going to get a little more aggressive with it. Keep bleed up some speed and I keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring.
We're going to get back to that video in just a minute. We've got four days of auto rotation tips to help you out. The first one we're going to get to real quick is how the flare in the auto is like the flare in your quick stop. And we're going to talk more about that to help improve your auto rotation. But first we've got to tell you about July 4th sale. And since it's July 4th, we're going to do 44% off any membership. Back here on the Hogs Wall of Fame. You can see our private pilots, instrument pilots, commercial pilots and CFIs over there in the corner rolling on the screen behind me on the Hogs Wall of Fame. We've helped hundreds of people get through their checkride. So for this sale, 44% off, you need the code July44. So on the private pilot monthly you're going to save $42.68 a month for 5,432. As long as you keep the course signing up during the July 4th sale, that price you'll be locked in. So the 12 month memberships are normally 697. You save $306.68 which makes that 39032 for a 12 month membership. And then we have a private pilot lifetime where you get private pilot, you keep it 997, you save $438.68 for a price of 558.32. And then we have ProPilot. ProPilot's been at 2800 for several years now. You save $1232. And that will cost you 1,568 with the July 44 discount. Put that, that code in the coupon box during, just during checkout and it will show you the discounted price. So that night it's a four day sale celebrating the fourth of July. So let's get back to that next auto rotation tip.
All right, we're going to do some quick stops for you before we go do some autos. It's always a good idea to do quick stops before you do auto rotation because it is essentially your flare in the auto. We're going to pick something like 40 and 40 somewhere in that general vicinity 1, 2, 3, quick stop. We're going to go down collective, right pedal, aft cyclic, and I'm going to adjust those as necessary. I'm going to let it keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring until the speed's almost gone. And then I'm going to level with forward cyclic. Raise collective, adjust my pedals, bring it down nice and slow. What I want to tell you is there's a million ways of teaching quick stops. And what you see me doing may or may not be anything like what you've been taught or what you've seen. And that's okay, because the idea is to quickly slow the helicopter down. But we should probably call it Slow Stop, not quick Stop, because people get the idea that they got to jerk the controls around. So let's do another one. 1, 2, 3, quick stop, down collective, right pedal, half cyclic. I'm going to start that flare, and I'm going to get a little more aggressive with it. Keep. Bleed off some speed, and I keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring, keep flaring. Speed's almost gone. I'm going to level it out. Raise collective, adjust pedals as necessary. And these can be essentially any airspeed or any altitude. Let's do another one. But let's do it less dramatic. Let's say we're almost to the end of the Runway and we started taking off, and then, I don't know, airplane was coming by, flying too low or whatever the case would be. 1, 2, 3, quick stop. Doesn't have to be super aggressive, but we can still do the same thing. Half cyclic, right pedal, adjust collective as necessary, Put a little flare on it. Once the speed's gone, level it out with the cyclic, raise collective as necessary. Because you're kind of setting yourself up for that auto rotation. That's exactly what you would do if you lost the engine. You'd flare it, get rid of the speed, you'd level it out, and you'd raise the collective right onto the ground. So, again, pretty easy maneuver, but it takes coordination, and that's what you need to work with until you have the maneuver. Nice, slow and smooth. Now we'll go do autos when you.
Feel the pressure to fly, but know the right decision is to stay on the ground. Hit the hogs. No, go and live to fly another day. Helicopterground.com.
