Kenny Keller live Q&A (Dec 25, 2024) covering helicopter training success stories and practical guidance. Topics include night-flying rules (passenger currency: 3 takeoffs/landings in make/model within 90 days; "night" defined using civil twilight; night logging window and when takeoffs/landings count as night), required aircraft equipment for night, private/commercial hour minima (40h private; 150h commercial), common training pathways (instrument rating recommended between private and commercial), CFI renewal/reinstatement procedures (CFI renewal every 24 months via FSDO showing recent successful students, 16-hour online/refresher course, or reinstatement checkride if lapsed), and a Dec 1, 2024 FAA allowance of an additional 3-month grace after CFI expiration (no CFI privileges during that extension). The video also offers study resources (Private Pilot 101 PDF, study guide with ~400 questions), HOGS products/affiliate info, and discussion of career/timeline expectations (private in ~6–12 months commonly).

Questions this video answers

Three takeoffs and three landings in the same make and model aircraft within the preceding 90 days; to carry passengers at night those takeoffs/landings must be at night.

Night is the time between the end of evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight as published in the Air Almanac (local time). Position/anticollision lights must be on from sunset to sunrise. Takeoffs/landings count as nighttime beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before sunrise.

Private minimum: 40 hours. Commercial: 150 hours total.

If your CFI has lapsed, you must take a reinstatement checkride (oral exam and flight test) with an FAA examiner; other renewal options before expiration include showing recent successful students to FSDO or completing a 16-hour online/refresher course. (Note: FAA provided an additional 3-month extension after expiration on Dec 1, 2024, but you do not have CFI privileges during that extension.)
