Shallow Approach & Running Landing (short slide) and common mistakes

Transcript of a Kenny Keller YouTube video teaching helicopter shallow approaches and running landings. Keller explains technique details (approximately 5° approach angle, control inputs: collective for descent, cyclic for speed, forward cyclic to avoid rear-skid strikes), common mistakes, a short demonstration narrative, and promotional material for Helicopter Ground School courses and downloadable maneuver PDF.

Moving forward, keeping the nose straight. Moving forward, moving forward.
And gonna get right back to that video and show you this running landing, something that I was taught from an examiner, again, legendary examiner on my private pilot checkride, he said, hey, I want you to go in and do a running landing across the Runway. They'll say this is your Runway, right? He wanted me to go across the Runway and I said I, I can. He said, why not? I go, because it's not long enough. This was 20 some years ago. And he goes, ah, I'm gonna walk you through it. He had me come in real super slow and just go like this across the Runway. About a ten foot slide. And he wanted to make the point to me that he knew I was flying with a young guy who was having me slide like a quarter of a mile down the taxiway. And he said, I want to expose you guys the fact that you may not just need to slide a quarter of a mile depending on the day and depending on the type of failure you're having, maybe it's a spark plug miss or you know, cylinder miss, or it's a turbocharger failure. Whatever the case is, maybe all you will need is just a little short slide. So something I learned from an examiner.
Of 50 years, it was good.
So we're gonna go right back to that video and since we're doing maneuvers here, free PDF maneuver guide direct from the helicopter flying handbook. In a simple PDF you can download have on your electronic device, you can even print it off if you, if you like. So that is down below. So we'll go back to the video and we'll come back and throw some kind of a special offer at you, pro pilot. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So now we're going to go around and we are going to do a shallow approach and running landing. Now this one, if you've experienced it already, you may have been taught a running landing with a pretty long slide. We're going to do ours going to be a little more, less aggressive than that. The slide is going to be a little shorter than what you may or.
May not have seen.
But the idea is depending on the day, maybe a short slide is all you need. On a certain day you might need a longer slide. So we're on downwind now. Make a quick radio call. Warsaw traffic helicopter 181Mike Bravo, right downwind for nine Warsaw. So the shallow approach is approximately 5 degrees and the common mistakes on the shell approach and running landing is somebody comes down, hits the rear of the skids and then flops the skids on down because it's hard when you're coming in. You want to slow down. So you have this tendency to be pulling aft cyclic, but you need to keep the forward cyclic in to keep the helicopter level. But we're going to talk through that as we come around and come in. So the shallow approach again is about 5 degrees, a little bit lower than our normal at 10 degrees. So with every maneuver we want to have a nice setup, take our time. If you set it up nice, it's going to be nice. If you set it up sloppy, it's going to be sloppy. So we're going to descend down to about 11:50 before I intercept my approach angle. So we're on downwind now. We'll clear to the left, clear to the right. Get ready to start a base turn. I'm going to lose some more of this altitude, start slowing down a little bit and we'll start our base turn. I'm going to turn two radio calls into one Warsaw traffic helicopter 181Mike Bravo, right face, turning final Warsaw. Okay, so I want to get 1100 and about 60, zero rate ascent, get it in trim, have all that stuff cleaned up before I intercept my approach angle. And that's why, if you're consistent with this, this is the key to learning the different approaches and being able to do them the same way every time is if you set it up the same way every time. So I got to get down a little bit Farther for our 1150. And right now in the vasi I can see red over red. When I get to red over white, I know that's three degrees. So I'm just going to keep this altitude. We'll keep it about 1200.
350.
Got 60, a little bit of left pedal for trim. Now there's our red over white. So that's three degrees. So I'm going to go just a little bit farther to call that a shallow. And now we're going to start flying it down. So I'm going to go down collective. A little bit of right aft or a little bit of right pedal, a little bit of aft cyclic. And we're just going to gradually slow this thing down. I'm going to touch just past the number nine. So I'm using the collective to control my angle. Cyclic to control my speed. And I'm going to keep gradually slowing it down. Cyclic controls the speed. It looks like we're always approaching those numbers at the same speed. At about 50ft, we'll put a little right pedal in get parallel with the Runway. Right now we're trimming into the wind because it's off the left hand side. Still control and angle with the cyclic. I'm sorry, Collective still controlling speed with the cyclic. You see a speed of a brisk walk. And again, I'm just going to keep bleeding the speed off. And I'm no hurry to get it on the ground. No hurry whatsoever. Again, remembering people very commonly hit the rear skid and then flop it down the front. But you want to try to land with skids level. I'm letting her sink down, forcing myself to keep that forward cyclic in there. Again, I kind of demonstrate. You can imagine people want to do this right, and then you come down and you hit the rear of your skid. So I'm pushing back on the forward. Just got to keep it moving, keep it moving. And then you got to stay on.
Top of the pedals.
You got to keep the nose straight. Long as you keep the nose straight, nothing bad is going to happen. Just keep it moving forward. Keeping the nose straight, moving forward, moving forward and down to the pavement. Stay on top of the pedals. Break with collective. And right there, there's a running lighting.
Hey, if you're new to hogs and new to our videos, that's the hogs wall of fame. Now a digital wall of fame. Private pilots, commercial pilots, instrument pilots, and certified flight instructors, all on the hogs wall of fame. We want to get you up there too. So I told you about a special offer. So remember, free PDF down below the maneuver guide. You can grab that. I'm going to toss that over here on the couch is where we do our final approach courses, where we help you finish your rating. Final approachcourse.com. and because you hung around for pro pilot, just because you hung around and we often, you know, change up the pro pilot. But because you hung around for this video, if you go for professional pilot, which is lifetime membership, private instrument, commercial, and cfi, you get one of these. A lot of you have that. But top 10 checkride tips.
Great for preparing for your checkride.
My first Amazon bestseller. Both of them are bestsellers. Get a paperback copy of that too. Helicopter truck ride. A lot of good content in there. And because you watch this video, private pilot study guide, we're gonna throw that in if you go for propilot. So you'll just have to email us after you sign up and say, hey, I saw that video on running landing and bought pro pilot. I'm ready for my books. And Heather will ship those out to you. We are helicopter line ground school. I'm Kenny Color, the creator doing our rs44 flight training. Been online 12 years providing courses and any of those courses you can take for a 24 hour test flight. On the monthly option. We have an option where you can just go month to month, cancel anytime, come back anytime. And it's pretty slick for people. We have people that will join private, they'll pass their private and then they'll unsubscribe. A few months later they come back, they sign up for instrument and then they unsubscribe and then a little bit later they come back and they do their commercial and then they unsubscribe and then you see them when they come back when they sign up for cfi. And if you ever want to take the time to roll through these videos, we have them on YouTube where you we show everybody there are a number of people that are up there four times because they've used the ratings continuously. All of the knowledge areas flying videos go through the pts which will become the ACS quizzes at the end of the lessons, at the very end of the whole course, FAA written test practice with updated questions that's also available for wings credit. Did you get some goodies hoodies?
Hogshoodies.com I didn't. I keep forgetting. And Heather just said, hey, did you mention hoodies? So we have T shirts and hoodies available@hogshoodies.com and Heather designed some other stuff that's on there as well. So anyway, she gets a little carried away with that.
