Kenny Keller recommends getting your IFR rating before your commercial rating because instrument training hours count as PIC time toward commercial. He did it the other way around and wishes he hadn't, but timing sometimes forces the order.

Hello, I'm Kenny Keller, the creator of Helicopter Online Ground School. I want to answer a question about instrument ratings that came from one of our members and this member said thank you again for your online ground school. I did not know what I would do without it, so I just passed my private and working on my commercial and had a question about ifr. So would it be better to already have my IFR private before finishing my commercial or should I get my commercial and then add on the instrument? For me, that's an easy answer. Yes, go ahead and do the instrument whether you're doing it as an add on rating or whether you're doing it as a first initial instrument. If you have your helicopter private and you're going for your helicopter commercial, by all means I would do the instrument rating before the commercial because you get your private then as you're logging your dual time getting your instrument instruction, that is piloting command time that you need for the commercial. So by all means I would do it. If you have the funds and you have the time to do the studying. If there's some reason why you just got to get to commercial because you have a job waiting, you want to do the instrument later, you could. That's what I did. I did the instrument after I'd been a CFI for a few years and looking back, I wished I would have done it prior to the commercial because again, you're spending your time and your energy working on the instrument rating, but as a private pilot, you're logging that precious pilot in command time that you need for the commercial rating. So this particular member from our ground school, as you can see here, fully customized, optimized mobile, friendly for all devices ground school, we're highlighting him right now because he just recently passed the private and he used our ground school with a lot of success.
