The “Monkey Seesaw” Mistake Every Student Makes in Autos

Kenny Keller shows why students hunt for airspeed in autorotations instead of nailing it upfront. Enter 2 to 5 knots above your target, set it with one small aft pull, then leave it alone. That stops the seesaw and gives you a stable RPM for a clean flare.

Next video. This is in our series of 30 days of videos. 30 different topics on 30 checkrides we've done in the last 30 months. Love the number three. So one thing that we're seeing, and this is something that I've felt pretty strongly, strongly about for the past 10 years, is I think the whole key to the auto, not only a good setup, but nailing that speed. I really feel like if you nail the speed, everything will come into play. And the things that we see in training and all the people coming in for not all of them, but some of the people coming in for the training to finish up their checkrides, they're not always like, if they want to use 70, they enter at 70. Well, I like to teach is I like to enter a little bit above 70 and then try to hold 70. Because when you enter, we want to do a small aft pull. And I call it setting the speed. So if I'm going to want to glide at 70, I'm going to start at about 72 or 75 enter and pull back. So I'm going to set up here for 18 and we're going to give this a try. And I think if you get the. The speed nailed, the RPM and everything else follows. So number one, a good setup. Number two, get that speed set and everything. Also fall in behind. So we're going to do one. We're going to get set up. Warsaw traffic, helicopter one mike bravo on final for one eight. Warsaw. There's my 70. I want to get a little above 70. Zero rate ascent, Michigan City. It's the bonanza. Three zero three five whiskey banner. Oh, hair faster there, Keller. Just a little bit more and I'll see if I can put my money where my mouth is. I'm a little fast. Slow it down just a little bit and I'm gonna go in 1, 2, 3, enter. Collective down throttle about 75. I'm gonna hold that right there. Perfect. Nothing else is moving. I'm just holding it. I'm doing nothing. As I get close, I'm gonna raise a hair collective just a hair. I got minimum of 70 still. Start my flare, flare, flare, flare, flare, flare. Roll in throttle. And R44 gets part of the credit for that. But that was really, really smooth. Nothing happened. The RPM wasn't wavering. The RPM stayed put. Air speed. Yeah, I was shooting for 70, but it felt good right where I was at. And I just held it. I didn't do anything. I'm telling you, if you can nail the speed the RPM is Going to follow. And then one of the other little tricks is making sure when you get that entry that you're zero rated ascent. You have the speed or just a hair above the speed you want. Have it in trim. And when you enter, make sure you add that pedal for trim. It comes down so much nicer if you add that pedal. And of course you have to adjust collective as necessary. Luckily, with our fuel load today and with two of us in here, I didn't do anything in that, in that, I did nothing in that auto rotation. All I did was lower, rolled off, just put the needles, added the right pedal, held the speed. I didn't do anything to the flare, I didn't have to adjust, nothing. And it's kind of fun to show that to people because when you're new and you're learning this, I get it, it's people aren't normal. Always entering with a nice smooth entry. And so if you enter too slow, for example, let's say you enter too slow and then you go to speed up. When you speed up, your nose drops. When your nose drops, RPM drops. So then you do a monkey seesaw. All the way to a monkey seesaw. I don't know what a monkey seesaw is, but you monkey with the controls as your seesaw and all the way down because you're playing with the speed, you're playing with the RPM and you're in a constant, it turns into a big mess. That's why it's so important to take your time and set it up nice and really focus on that speed. And you'd just be amazed at how nice these autos can really come out versus fighting it all the way down. Okay, well we're gonna wrap that up for today. We'll be back tomorrow with another one.
