Reimagine & Launch | People Magic Summit with Marie Forleo

Marie Forleo talks about scaling from one-on-one coaching to B-School and her membership Dream Club. She uses 'simplify to amplify' as her design principle, keeps cohorts timeboxed to avoid overwhelm, and priced the founding offer at $997 for six months. Her daily practice: batching content, focus blocks, and consistency.

How does everybody feel about us bringing Marie onto our stage? I wish I had, like. Like an amazing kind of literally, fireside Chat. Chat. Right. Like, wouldn't that be cool if we had one of those, like, what is that over Christmas or the holidays where it's like the fire is playing in the back?
That would be real log. Yeah, that's what I want. You.
I want a log for 5 chat. Brie, thank you so much for joining us.
Come on, come on. This is such a party. It's such a great time. I adore you. I adore Mighty. I adore this whole conversation. I'm here for it.
I am super grateful, and I know that folks in the chat are stoked. So here's. Here's what I want to kind of kick off our conversation around. So you have been doing this for a while. You have been a coach, you have been a teacher, you are an educator, you're a searcher in ways that are truly inspiring. And you and I have met and known each other for a very long time, which is one of my favorite things in the world. How do you see your business evolving? Like, where. Where have you been? Where are you today? And where. What are the questions or the ways that you are the most excited to help people from here? And maybe we can just start there. Yeah.
So, I mean, starting back in, like, 1999, 2000, it's like, OMG, right? So none of this existed back then. You know, email newsletters, it was like, wait, what? And me selling my first PDF that was, you know, full of hot pink and highlighters and lots of exclamation points. As a human, I am basically a walking exclamation point. So I've always had a lot of energy. And as a coach, it was just like, that was my thing. How do I help people change their lives? And this was this new kind of profession at the time that didn't really exist. I thought it sounded cheesy as all get up, but I also loved it. I was like, this is what I am born to do.
When. When did you look at it and say, wait a second, no one's doing this, but I want to do this because I think this is one of the fundamental challenges of this moment, is that there is, like, there is stuff out there that says, if you don't do it this way, you're an idiot.
And.
Fighting that is something that takes a lot of courage.
Yeah. I mean, so for me, you know, I had stumbled upon this article in 1999 about a new profession at the Time new I'm doing bunny ears for those of you who can see me about like coaching and how you could actually work from anywhere. This location independence thing, again, you got to place this in context. We also had flip phones during this moment. Right. And that you could actually help people, that it wasn't therapeutic, it wasn't like diving into their past and like, oh my God, your parents screwed you up and it's never going to be okay. It was all about strategically supporting people into a bigger. And I was like, this is like custom made for me. But I was also 23 years old at the time and I'm from New Jersey, so I'm very sober. To the fact I was like, look, you've been failed at a bunch of jobs, Wall street magazines, this and that. You're in debt up to your eyeballs. You're 23 years old. Who's going to hire a 23 year old life coach? Like, you haven't even lived life yet. Like, this is dumb, this is stupid. But. So no one was thinking of this, but I couldn't deny that on a soul level. And I think some people might be able to relate. When you know that it is your time to expand, to make some type of transition, to step into a bigger or different chapter of your life, you just know it. Even though it's terrifying, it makes no sense to your brain, your heart. And for me, I lit up like a Christmas tree and it was like the clouds parted. Little angels and cherubs, like, Maria, this is what you're meant to do, right? Right. So yeah, it was terrifying. Nobody was really doing it. The only person that was really. So there was like two folks that I could look to at that time. And, and it was Deepak Chopra, because I had taken this class about the seven spiritual laws of success in college. And then there's Tony Robbins. I was like, dude, frigging Tony. You know what I mean? But I didn't really see a lot of females in the space. And also I, I adore both of those humans. They, you know, have taught me so much. But I also noticed as I started to get into the world of personal development and success that everything was very serious, you know what I mean? And it was very. And I was like, that is so not me. It's like not how I'm built. So I don't know if that's answering your question, but absolutely, keep going.
This is amazing.
Yeah. And so I think some of the important parts are, you know, where I started. You were asking me like, where where are you? How are you thinking about it? Like, where's it going? For me, it's always been about the people. How do I use whatever my gifts, my insights, my talents, my abilities are to help others. And, you know, I think our society in general doesn't really give us a lot of training on how to do that effectively. So most of us are kind of reaching around in the dark and blind and you know what I mean, trying to find our way. And I think what's so exciting about Mighty and so excited about the platform and for all y', all, as Gina said, we go way back. My first ever one to many program. So to put this into context, as a one on one coach, I used to work with people individually helping them get results in their lives. And very soon. I'm also a woman who loves money. I love creating wealth for myself and other people. I saw the ceiling on that and you got to get. While I was building my coaching business, I was a bartender waiting tables. I was just at dinner last night in New York City and someone I used to bartender, they're like, marie, is that you? I was like, yes. And it was a waiter who I used to work with, and he's like, oh my God, you look the same. I'm like, thank you. And hi. Because it wasn't that long ago that I was bartending all around New York City and restaurants. All this to say that I saw a possibility to say, oh, if I can help people create results in a one on one format, I can do this. One to many. How do I do it? One to many. I tried to build my own membership site. Gina, I think I might have told you the story, but I tried it. And this was probably in like the early 2000s.
Yeah.
I sold a program. It crashed and burned. I was mortified. It was like such a flop and a failure. And I said, hey, wait, I can still create this transformation for people, but I need. I am not a tech human at all. I'm a creative human and a human human. I found a little site called Ning, which, I don't know, have you told everybody that, that.
Oh, I. I founded this thing called Ning.
Yeah.
Before Mighty is my second platform all around building these connections between people and enabling them to go do things together.
The reason why I'm bringing this up is because Gina and her genius and her insight and visionariness had created this other platform that actually was a critical part in not only my own growth, but the business that we have today. Because I got a chance to Connect people. Some of my top employees that I've ever had in our 23 year history came from the fact that they were my customers and clients in a program that I created on Ning. But and Gina and I have stayed in touch and it's like, so to move this conversation forward, I have created programs like our B school program, for instance. We've helped over 80,000 people start and grow meaningful, profitable businesses all around the world. So Gina and I are so aligned in the possibility of taking something that you have a gift, a possibility, information transformation, a framework, some type of thing that you know, you can support people on and then doing it one to many, but doing it in a way that is full of heart and values and connection and having people connect with each other. And I'll tell you is a couple years ago that I could feel another change coming on in the industry. I have been not only a fan of Mighty, I'm happy to say this, I'm an investor in it. Like I put my money where my mouth, my head and my heart is. I knew what her and her team were building and I see the future of this industry meaning information coaching, transformation consulting. There's so many things that have been born since 1999 when I started. But what Gina was just talking about, this network effect, this ability to bring people together in a really meaningful, focused, clear way. Help them go on a journey that they want to go on, get results far beyond they could ever imagine having done on their own. And then this is the most important part, connecting them with like minded, like hearted others where they exponentially grow and develop and create these friendships and business partnerships or whatever it is in ways that would never have been possible without a network like Mighty. I'll pause there because I can keep talking because I love to talk.
We love you talking. As I'm watching the, as I'm watching the chat here, the this is I think really relevant to a lot of people. I mean because. And where I'm really interested is, you know, you have watched an industry really grow up around you. I was reflecting on this even you know, today where it has become mainstream to create email newsletters, where it has become mainstream to create courses. And what's been so fascinating to me is that community is this thing that's like the 15th thing down on someone's list where it's like you've got to do all of these things before you can have a community. And what's so interesting is that everything we know in Silicon Valley is that it's the Opposite. When you connect people to each other, that is when you accelerate your growth. That is when you can create more value for people. And yet we've, you know, for a variety of very, I would say, innocent reasons, this is not some sort of evil cabal that's basically decided that, like, you know, we're gonna blow everybody out with social media. But it's become about content, content, content, content. And what I think is so exciting about you being someone who lives a little bit more in the future as opposed to the present and the past and your openness to new things, I think that there's a lot that this audience can learn from and this community can learn from.
Well, let's talk about that for a minute, because one of the things that I've taught to our B schoolers over and over again, and it was way harder before something like Mighty came along. And that's why, like, I do cartwheels every day. And you guys, you got to know this. I talk about Mighty so much to people because I meet so many people. Like, I run into fans on the street here in New York City where I am, and they're just like, oh, my God. And they're so beautiful people, so excited to tell me about their business. And if I have a few minutes, I'm like, okay, so tell me, what are you up to? You know, what are you up to? You know, what are you struggling with? What's happening? Because if I have anything in this brain or body that I can toss out that would be supportive, I'm like, this is why I'm here. And I remember specifically on Bleecker street, met this incredibly beautiful couple, and they said, hey, we're B schoolers. This is amazing. And now you know what we really want to do. And they were not from this country. It was country in South America. And they said, we really want to create community. I was like. And I literally said, stop. And I was like, give me your phone. Here's where you got to go. Because it hadn't existed before. So I just want to back up the point that you made. You know, there is no evil cabal. But part of it was because we wanted people to succeed in having that list and having, like, all these things before, because there was no platform that allowed this to happen in the way that you guys have built it. Yeah. And when it comes to courses, when it comes to challenges, when it comes to events, here's what's the coolest thing ever about Mighty? What? When you start there, you exponentially speed up. How Good of results that you can create for people because the learning happens so fast. It happens dynamically. Dynamically. You get real time feedback. People let you know instantly where they're confused. Right. What's going on. And then if you take care of them, they're going to tell 15 people that this is the best thing since sliced bread. So it is simpler. What you guys have created is simpler. It's more intuitive. It's great. You know, Can I talk a little bit about Dream Club? Because that's my first, you know. Yeah. Only because in the context of.
Well, I. We were getting there, but let's just jump to Dream Club because I. Yeah.
Talk about it. How? Well, I'll tell.
So I'll talk about Dream Club from my perspective. It's incredible. Like, there's. There's something about building software and dreaming about how people will use it. And then they're seeing it being used in a way that lived in my head for, I mean, realistically, six years, seven years. And so maybe start with, like, what is Dream Club? Why? Like, why. Why was it important for you to create Dream Club? And I will also just say, I am such a proud member and the members that I am meeting in Dream Club are incredible.
Yes. So for context, everyone, you know where Gina came before, she was like, okay, wait, how did you get here? Just to kind of set the context, where's it going? Where I see it going? And you had mentioned this before I came on. We need to simplify one of my mantras in life. I'm a human that has adhd. I have ideas. They're like bunnies having sex in my brain 24 7, 365. It never ends. It's messy up there. Right? So simplify to amplify is a mantra that I use in business and life and I pass onto other people. Because entrepreneurial folks like us, we tend to be like that. We have a lot going on. We're also living in a world right now from a digital landscape perspective that is more complex than it's ever been. So how do we counteract that? We simplify. When we simplify, we amplify. What do we amplify? Our profits, our impact, our joy, our freedom. All the good stuff in life.
Can I just stop one? Because that was just like a little bit of gold that Steph. Simplify to amplify. And I think that this is really, really important stuff has gotten very, very complex to the point where I'm good at this stuff and my face is getting fried off. Like, that's why people. Magic. Profit is so important. Okay, keep going.
But, yeah, no, no, this is important for people to hear, too, especially because you and I, we've been in the game for a long time. For me, starting, like, before this stuff was even born. So I have a perspective. And that's why I'm so excited to share with everyone, because if anyone here, and I don't know if you guys can talk about it in the chat, but if you've been feeling lately or you're like, this is too freaking hard. I'm overwhelmed. Like, there's too many things to. To do, and there's. It's just like, like. And then you want to give up and you want to cry and you want to quit, and you think that you're not good enough. No, it is not your fault if you are feeling burnt out, if you are feeling like, this is too complicated, if you've been, like, trying to go at it in all these different directions and you're like, this, it's not working. It's not true. It's not your fault. It's not you, it's the world. How do we counteract that? Simplify to amplify? How do we counteract that? How is I looking to counteract that? I was like, how? I have a super. I have a few superpowers. I'm not great at everything, but there's a couple things. I'm so good at it. I'm fucking dangerous. And I was like, one of the things that I'm really good at doing is bringing amazing people together, having them connect with each other, and then having them help each other take. Take it to a level that's, you know, 120 and beyond. Like, I feel like I'm a catalyst. I don't have all the answers, but I know how to bring good people together. So I started watching the landscape change, and I was like, you know what? People are so fragmented. Their attention is fragmented. All these different platforms. You take Instagram in and of itself, that's like a whole universe that it never used to be. You take YouTube in and of itself. Like, you could spend your whole day, your whole career, just getting good at this one thing. And we're expecting people to do 17 million things and not have a team and then actually enjoy their lives. It's. It does not work. It's playing a losing game. I was like, I want to bring everything over into a place that is modern, quiet, customizable, where I can create this magical little land of Marie Forleo, where I get to pour into people in a really meaningful way, have them connect with each other on a platform that. And when I say safe, I just mean safe from a bunch of bullshit. Safe from distractions and interruptions, Safe from content that ain't gonna make anybody feel good or be a better person or reach their highest potential. And so simultaneously. And I'm gonna get to the definition of dream club and I hope. Are you guys good with this? I know mom is going a lot of different places, but hopefully I'm checking in the chat. Yes. Okay, Good, good, good. I only play games I can win. Yes, good, good, good. So we're going to keep going. So there was this dream that I've been hanging on to for a while. My best friend and I have these private meetings where we talk about everything. She's a New York Times bestselling author. We've both been growing our business together for, you know, probably like 15 years. We talk multiple times a week. And we just have these meetings where we have real 10, 10 talk about business, digital marketing, money, relationships, sex, beauty products, skin vacations, latest cute show on tv. What are you listening to? What are you watching? All that stuff. And we challenge each other to literally. It sounds cliche, but, like, live our best lives. And I was talking to Gina because Gina and I talk, and I was telling her, I said, I have an idea for a new community that's beyond B school, beyond time, genius. Beyond everything is figureoutable. Beyond all stuff I've created where I want to bring other people together who are amazing, ambitious, creative humans who want to live their best life. Sorry, I'm sorry if this is. Again, Jersey Marie comes out. I think we're all adults here. Hopefully there's no small children. So we're all good.
We are good.
And I wanted to make this community that not only was this container for people to dream into, who they are becoming, what they want to create, what their dream business in life really is. Because if you've watched MarieTV, our tagline is create a business and life you love. And I'm like, and I also want to give people the latest mindset, tool, tools, and business tools that I'm learning in real time, that I can't update B school fast enough. I can't update some of my other courses fast enough. I want to be able to do stuff I don't even put on social and have throwdowns. And then this was the other thing. And I told Gina this year, I know you were like, wait, what? Dance and movement. I believe Is the future like an integrated experience of learning that's not just conceptual, that's not just intellectual, that's out of your head, out of your head into your body, out of your head, change on an energetic level. It's. In my opinion, it, like, surpasses what we can accomplish in some forms of psychotherapy because just music and movement. As a former Nike elite dance athlete, I know the power of music and movement. So I was like, we're gonna dance in there. I'm gonna help people dance their dreams, like, into reality. And I was like, this is all what Dream Club is. And Gina was like, right. You tell them what your reaction is. You're like, I need to join this club.
Can we make Like, I would like this to exist because I want to be a member.
Yes.
I spend so much of my time, you know, working with hosts, thinking about hosting, and this was. I was like, I want to be a member of this. And I. You know, Marie shared the idea of dreamclub. First of all, I was, like, super jealous of the name. I was like, that's, like, the best name ever. And I, like, text. I think I texted you, like, the next morning. And I was like, you have to do this.
Yeah.
Tell us when, where, how, how we can be the most supportive because this needs to exist in the world.
Yes. So that this has been a practice. This, like, these little secret meetings called Dream Club. I talk with Gina. I share the name. She's like, girl, you got to do this. You got to do other things about Gina. Just so you guys know, like, I, given my career and who I am and what I've done and will continue to do, I have backdoor behind the stage, access to a lot of people, a lot of founders, a lot of powerful people, and I love that, and I'm so grateful for it. Here's one of the things you need to know about Gina and her team. This is what I tell everybody else, too. I'm like, they are the real deal. They give so many about how everything is built, how it feels like the integrity level is off the charts. So this one kept following up with me. Not pressuring me, but saying, you got to bring this Dream Club thing to life. And I'm like, yes. Anyone who knows me knows I'm very focused. I have, like, these plans for how I get things done. And it took a little bit of marination time. But once we launched it, can I tell all of you, all her team and the platform, it was one of the easiest things. Once we said yes, we Brought this thing. I think Gina, I think it was like six weeks. We brought this life. Yeah. So I've dealt with building custom platforms. Can we talk about wanting to stick a fork in my eye and dying? I've worked on so many different plat. Nothing has been as easy as mighty our members. Okay, I'm gonna let you go. But our for we all love it. We love it so much. I want to roll around on the floor and like make love to it. That's how good this thing is.
And thank you for that. I, I love Ruth. The, the, the as I talked about yesterday, the whole point of the next few months, we've got the this summit which is about inspiration and insights which I think we're doing a pretty good job with right now. Like right, right in the chat. The next thing we're launching that starts on Monday is a countdown to January. 30 day challenge for structure and guidance. And then the last piece is Love and bonuses. Love and Bonuses. So as we look at what we're doing, I, I, I have to ask, you know you have exposure to a lot of other platforms out there.
A lot.
You know there was, I think Lillian in the chat was like ah, I'm trying to decide between mighty and some other platforms that are out there and.
Like honey, Lillian thought I would just.
Throw this softball at you.
Lillian. Let me just take care of Lillian for a moment. I cannot. If you guys would see my text strings. So I'm a person. I don't know if you could tell us. I like taking care of people. Right. I'm only one human but I have a lot of folks that are New York Times best selling authors. I also by the way have like amazingly talented creative friends who no one's ever heard their name. And I give them the same thing. I'm like texting them to the mighty team. I'm like, don't around with anyone else. It's some bullshit. Just trust me on this. Like I, I have the receipts, I have the pain, I have the waste of time, I have the wasted money. I have the texts, I have the phone calls from people going like have you ever been on X, Y and Z? Like it's a little bit of a show. I'm like, that's why you gotta go over here. Simplify to amplify. None of us want to spend our lives in some tech hell, right? Like no.
How many people would like to spend their lives in a tech hell. Just raise your hand if you are excited about that. Please know and look and let I.
Just Want to also be, like, the transparency Police. Like, first of all, our business, my every pla. There's no. There's no platform, there's no business. There's no anything on the planet that, like, never has a challenge. Like, have you ever seen your Internet go down? Have your cell phone ever not work? You know what I mean? I mean, like, we're in 2024. It's not like anyone's like, oh, there's never. Life is full of challenges. Business is full of challenges. And with that said, Mighty is the best of the best. Like, I. I have an active, amazing community. And P.S. we are just. So you guys know how much, like, again, take it from me, been doing this 23 years. Go around the block. We're moving our entire. All of our experiences over to Mighty. That's how good it is. That's how simple it is. Simplify to amplify. All over the place. I don't need complications in my life. As we get older, I'm like, I got to protect this collagen. I don't need more gray hairs. You know what I mean? It's expensive to keep all this up.
It really is.
Don't need more stress. Mighty. So, Lillian. Mighty. That's all I'm going to say.
So let's talk about simplify to amplify. Yes. When did you first start to have the inkling that something in your. Your world, your life, your business needed to go from where you were to this next chapter to this next chapter.
Meaning, like, having active community, being on Mighty, all that. So for me, it was really. I am always desiring things that are simple. So, like, I was getting frustrated as all get out. In all honesty, like, we've built everything custom. And by the way, the reason we built everything custom was just because I started in the ice age when nothing was available, right? So that's the reason why. And anyone has, like, you know, technical. You almost have, like, technical debt. It's like a junk drawer. It's just like, all the shit from the past that you got to go clean up. And so for me, what's the most frustrating thing is. Oh, we'd like to update this header. We want things to feel and look fresh and clean, and now we have to talk with a programmer, and then it's gonna. That takes three days. And like, y', all, it was. That's painful for myself and my team. I'm like, shit should not take three days. Here's a joy. When I went on Mighty for the first time and, like, Dream club's alive and we're, like, figuring it out and we're doing all that stuff. I was like, oh, you know, I remember kind of talking with someone on Team Mighty was like, how do we do this? And she's like, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop. It's like a word doc. That's how easy it is. I was like, oh, I can do that. Oh, anyone on my team can do that. Anyone who knows how to, like, send a text or send an email can literally make this thing look and function amazingly well. And you can update stuff. That's called simplifying. That's called, you don't need a hugely expensive dev team like we used to have where it's like. Because you have that. Like, Gina and her team, they are the technology people. If you are a creative like me, you should not be running a tech company. Right. Or even attempting to. So I don't know if that answered your question, but I just. I started to know that stuff was changing when I just felt so frustrated that I was going to destroy all the collagen and then burn my whole company down. Because it was. I was like, I feel like I'm living back in 1999 and it's, you know, 23, and this is. I. Okay. That you guys, if. That we're doing, like, the real, real. I know sometimes, like, you know, you got to try and keep it together and be super professional. But, yeah, I want people to win, and you know what I mean? I want them to win. I want them to make an impact. I want them to make money.
So shifting to you.
Yes.
Because I. I think, you know, and. And I'll start to pull some questions in and we'll go in a couple of different directions. What does a day in your life look like?
Oh, my goodness. There's like, what, like, you know what I mean?
Like, like I was someone on my team who I was meeting for the first time a couple weeks ago. They literally asked me the question. They're like, so it's like a normal day for you?
Yeah.
And I thought that that is, like, it's one of my favorite questions. Is that something folks are interested in? Because I want to know, like, what time do you get up? Do you eat breakfast? Like, how do you structure your day? How do you structure your weeks? And what can we take away from you as a creative building a really successful business?
Yes.
What does it look like?
It looks different at different seasons of the year and at different stages and seasons of my life. So as I Mentioned before as a human with an ADHD brain. Right. And there's a lot happening. I've also coined the phrase I'm a multi passionate entrepreneur. So there's a lot that I do. If I am working, for instance, during that moment, those six weeks where we were like, okay, Dream Club is coming to life. When I am crystal clear on a primary project that is like giving birth to a new course, giving birth to a new program, giving birth to a book or something like that. Here's my go to. I wake up in the morning, I get caffeinated because I love coffee. And then I usually have a little bit of writing. It's from the artist's way, if anyone knows morning pages. Julia Cameron Genius. Three pages of stream of consciousness. Why? It is a really good clearing out mechanism. Yes, yes. And more. Yes. It is a life changing practice. You can google it, it's free. All you need is a note like I do everything in these like stuff. Super simple $1 notebooks that I get at CVS. Except for really mapping out my dreams. That's a little bit more like a $20 journal. We can talk about that later. But I do my journaling, I'm nice and caffeinated. And then I go into a focus block of which is typically writing. You know, it's typically writing that sales copy, mapping out what this program is writing or scripting the actual content. Something that is generative from my brain and my soul onto the page in computer format. And I do that. You know, it could be anywhere from like two hours to like four hours. Sometimes there's a smoothie, sometimes there's an egg burrito, sometimes there's not. And then once I can get through that core focus block, then everything else can happen. Meaning a meeting could happen, going to work out. Like all of the other things that must happen need to happen after. Because I've discovered through painful experience that if I do it the other way around, never gets done. So this is all. Yes. Material from time. Genius, by the way. And then all the like, what's the rest of the day look like? Man, that is varied. Sometimes mom is going to the grocery shop in the middle of the day. You know why? Because grocery shopping is meditative for me. Get me with a cart out of New York City in a big grocery store because I don't have them here and I'm happy as a clam. And then coming home and cooking some dinner from a man, you know, hanging out, happy as a clam. There's other days where I like to Batch. And I think that this is useful, a useful takeaway for anyone here. If there are pieces of your business or your life that are repetitive that you need to do. The notion of batching is just, it's a sanity saver in our hyper fractured, hyper overwhelming, hyper over stimulating world. What does batching look like? Well, I'm going to spend the next few hours pumping out, you know, five to 10 emails on X, Y or Z. Or I'm going to spend the next few hours working solely on our MarieTV episodes or whatever that thing is, that if I could do it in a batch and not split it up in five different places where I'm like, by.
The way, Jane or somebody, can we put Time Genius in the chat? Because oh my God, I took it and it's incredible.
It's a lifesaver. It's a.
So like, I don't, I don't take a lot of things I have found, especially in moments where I needed just perspective. Both of those programs are really good and great to do.
Yes, please. Again, not just for anyone who's like me, who you're like, how the hell am I supposed to get it all done? Time Genius, it's a program. Everything is rooted, it's evidence based. It's not just my opinion. And it's built for people like us who don't necessarily have like cookie cutter days. And so you have to have an ability to have flexible tools that help you be not only your most productive, but more importantly, your most joyful. Because in my opinion, you know, you were talking about success. I think someone mentioned this, or maybe I'm just making it up, but for me, a big component of success is about sustainability and being able to do this over the long term. That's where all the benefits come from. And if you push so hard that you burn out, it's like, what's the fucking point? Right? What's the point?
This is one of the reasons why in People magic, it's about positioning yourself as a host. So it's, it's about how do you create a party that you can go upstairs and go to bed like that to me is maybe, maybe that says more about me than it does about anybody else. But it's really important. So, so creating that context for what are the transitions.
Yes.
That you're focusing in on. How do you help somebody have their best year ever? And then monthly themes, a weekly calendar and daily polls and questions that you can set up in advance. The reason for that is that, number one, you're trying to do something which is connect people, to go do that thing together, which is such a powerful model. But it's also like, don't blow yourself out. Set it up for the long term. Where if you do the same. And actually, I got this from you. I don't think I've ever said this to you.
But.
But the whole. The whole point of the weekly calendar and where I realized, wait a second. If someone just does something on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they can be really basic things, they can be something sort of more in intensive, depending on your community. But where do you think I got Tuesdays, Marie TV? Roughly like 7 or 8am and it wasn't that I was necessarily clicking through to MarieTV, but because you had modeled being so consistent. I totally stole that and, like, brought it into people. Magic profit. Because you stayed top of mind for me for years. Yeah.
I still get texts from you on Tuesdays. I'm like, oh, did you read that? Yeah, just this week.
Yes. And it's. It's sometimes hard to remember that, and I certainly struggle to remember this, that people, even if they don't take an action, just being consistent in the time or in the time of day and the day of the week that you do something will radically amplify your impact.
Yes. And I think what you guys have built here is a way to somewhat. It's like automate that make this easy for yourself. It goes back to our idea of batching. Right. So how we do it in Dream Club, like, it's so much fun. It's fun for me to work with my team and look at all of our engagement posts and, you know, look at our theme and go, okay, great. What are the kind of questions that I feel as a coach, in my heart, in my soul, are going to help people really reflect on what's important, get them to interact with each other. And so all of this, y' all becomes so much fun and it is easy for yourself. Or if you have someone on your team that you work with or like Gina said, they have chat. Like, there's so many different ways and different tools built in that this doesn't have to be a heavy lift. And I also want to say something else. I don't know if you've covered this already, Gina, but just again, I'm always looking to help people succeed and thrive, make the most money, make the most impact. I want to talk about a big mistake that I know that many people make in membership, specifically around community. Community. And this is also true in courses, too. If I'm going to be honest. But I want to talk about membership specifically. You give too much. One of the reasons that people unsubscribe or that people leave things is, and I know this because I talk to a lot of people that have a lot of membership as a huge revenue portion of their entire company. It's people, when they do their exit surveys, they're like, oh, there was so much, and I couldn't take advantage of it. There was so much that they just feel overwhelmed. So one of the things that we built into Dream Club because Again, Real Talk 1010, I knew that our ideal member, our ideal client is someone who is not looking to drown in a gajillion, bajillion things. Spaciousness is like, you know what I mean? It's our core key word. So even with the prompts, people don't need 10 million things coming out that they already have that in their life. So it's like looking at really who your ideal member is, what do they want and not overwhelming them. And this is a very, very hard pattern to break, especially for some of us who have been trained or who believe that the more you throw into there, the better. It's just not true. Yeah, yeah.
This is, John has the question, what's, what's the balancing point on Community? And Mary is basically saying, oh my gosh, I offer too much here, here's where I think it comes from and you can tell me whether I'm, I'm, I'm on track. Here's what I've observed in, in the most giving way, you as the host, you as the entrepreneur are like, where is my value coming from? Well, my value, the world is telling me, is coming from my content, it's coming from my content, it's coming from my content. And so what in a very natural way do we then want to do is give people a lot of content. Now where I saw this and the light bulb moment for me was during COVID we were, I was watching how a, a women's co working space that was transitioning from the real world into a digital. The digital realm was focused on how do they get busy working mothers to consume 70 videos to go to all of these events. And I, I, I'm like, oh my God, like, that's not the point.
I want to take a nap.
I, I am not a, like working mother going through covet. And I was tired.
Yeah.
And so what I think is so powerful and I think it, you know, it, it is, it is a different it, it's A different framing.
Yes.
Which is how much content do you need to drive relationships? And the reality is that we need less and less and less content and this is what it actually ends up meaning. Time genius, for example.
Yes.
Becomes less about the video and more about the accountability groups, the people who are doing time genius together. Or how does it become something, you know, people, magic, profit. They're 15 minute episodes. Like, we're like, no, no, just get in and out. Because the most important thing is that we have a shared understanding of this one simple concept so that we can go build relationships around it.
Yep.
And what I believe, passionately, as you can tell, what I believe is, is happening as we speak, that a lot of people can't see yet, is that the relationships and the people and the enough content to create a framework for people to go apply in their lives and then be surrounded by other people on the same path that is going to simply pull away in terms of where people want to spend their time, their effort, their energy from the way everybody else is going to keep trying to do it harder. And I think that this is so important because how many people are paying attention to the gurus that are out there that are like, business is hard, business is mean, business is sweaty. That's the word I keep kind of coming back to. It's sweaty. It's like, it's dark and sweaty and you need to get yelled at to like, get off your ass and like.
Go build a business.
Because it's about grinding it out.
Yeah. Grinding it up.
And like, it's not a way. First of all, it's not a way to build a business in a moment of rapid change, number one. And number two, it's not very much fun.
No, it's not fun. And it's also not sustainable. No, no, it's, it's not sustainable. I mean, one of the things that we also, we talk about in time genius. You know, this is just, these are just facts. These are stats. You know, all disease is either caused by or amplified, exacerbated by stress. 90%. 90. And all of us know, and many of us have had this experience already where you hit a wall, right? And, and you want a business. You know, I was talking about this with Chris, my best friend, and it's like, you want a business that's lifeproof, right? You want a business that's lifeproof. Because guess what? This is life. And stuff is coming. Unexpected things, difficult things, disappointing things.
I have never heard you say the term lifeproof. And I'm going to credit you and Chris for this. But it's so good.
Well, because. And this kind of speaks back to this whole, like, a different approach. And again, we are coming into a new time. You know, you were talking about in a rapidly changing world. You know, I think that this perspective, it's like, yeah, things were done a particular way. We'll talk 1999, 2000, the kind of birth of this new digital world that we're in. And here we are in 2024, about to be in 2025. It's like we are entering into a whole new age. And so the old ways are completely crumbling, and the old was about more and Bush and, like, you know, this whole. Sorry, I know. I'm like, the whole. The platform's freaking out. Like, what is she doing? Why is she talking so loud? But that was the feeling. And, like, all of us are, like, crying in a corner, sniveling, because we're like, it's not. No, it's too much. And so this new way, and I think the new age, less is more, simplify to amplify. People need spaciousness. People need connection. And really deep, meaningful connections are gold. And you cannot have that in just the open Internet anymore. You can't. Anyone who spends even a second, like, on social media, you know this to be true. It's a shit show. It really is. Like, let's just call it what it is. You don't feel good, people don't feel good. You know what I mean? Even if you're like, oh, I'm just following people, like, and then, you know, forget about it. It's just a mess. And one of the pieces of feedback that we receive in Dream Club, and I'm excited for this to keep going, is people like, oh, my God, it's so wonderful in here. Like, I'd like to be in here more. Everyone's so encouraging. People are having fun. They're making jokes and they're getting together and they're doing these meetups, like, all this stuff, by the way, y', all, that we didn't have to plan, that I didn't have to plan. And they're doing it on their own. And I'm like, this is what it's about. This was the dream in my heart. I want to connect beautiful people together, that we have these shared ideas and these shared concepts and these tools that we use, and they're doing it, and it's happening. So, again, I just want to say that for anyone who is like, God, is this real? Does this work? It's like, yes, y'. All.
Well, and, and, and maybe you can react to this. Something I hear a lot from people is in a, especially in a membership. Well, what are people paying for? Like, if they're not paying for my content, what are. What are they paying for? And nobody believes me when I, like, unless I've like hammered it into them in every interaction, which is people are paying for this space to meet and build relationships with each other.
Yeah. And look, you know, and the way that you guys have the framework set up, it is about some content. It's not like there's nothing. You're not going to build a ghost town, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming and you don't have to bleed to death. And you. And again, it is a mistake. I've heard this from people who have memberships, you know, in different forms that are like multi, multi, multi, multi, million dollar memberships, thousands of members. And it's like the number one mistake we all make is we give too much. There's too much in there. People feel overwhelmed.
Yeah.
So I don't want to be.
Your gift becomes home. I always think about it as like the, the stack of National Geographics. Like, they look nice, but like, nobody's reading them. No one's reading the National Geographics. Or maybe that's just in my house that we have a lot of them and no one is reading them. Let's. In sort of our, our final 15 minutes here, I'd love to ask some more questions around Dream Club. Specifically, one of the questions we saw in the chat was, how did you come up with the price for it? How did you think about the offering? Especially because it's high ticket, Just maybe take us through that. Yeah. And how did you get comfortable with what you offered? And then also what happened?
Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So, so I love this. And this is like my world of what I do. And I'll tell you, I teach this in B school. I'm happy to share it here. The way that I always think about, especially at this point in my career. And I just want to set that in context because I have been doing this for decades and I just look at any new possible venture of like, okay, what is this going to require from me and my team? And what is going to get me excited from a financial point of view, because this is a for profit business, to make this thing come to life. So I take out my cell phone and the favorite app I have on there, which is the calculator app. Love it. And I mean I want to just say this to you because literally, Gina, last week, and by the way, I'm going to have to talk to you about this offline. But someone who's super dear in my life, I once again, he was telling me about this thing he wants to do. I'm like, you got to do it on my again. I'm a broken record. And I went on my day and I was so happy that you guys had your calculator.
We have a calculator?
Yes. So this all goes to this pricing conversation. So I just thought through what I estimated, which is really a guesstimate of how many members that I would love to have in our inaugural Dream Club class. And then looked at kind of how much we would be pouring in and what would make it sense for the business. You know what I mean? And I often talk and like again, guys, I'm at an age right now where it's like the not giving any, you know, whatever. And I'm a little bit like a business supermodel. Like I'm not getting out of bed really for under a million. I'm just not doing it anymore. I'm happy to show up and give time for free, where the heart is aligned. And I'm like, dude, I will pour into people just like on the street. You catch me and I got nothing going on. I'll give you the best of the best. But if I'm devoting team resources and you know what I mean, building a thing, that's what it looks like for me. So whether or not that stays true, who knows? But that's how it is right now. And so I did all those calculations and I thought about it and I wanted the price for Dream Club for my founders to be such a good deal that honestly that they would feel silly for not saying yes for the right people. And I also made it very clear, Jean, I don't know if you remember, but I think it's on the, on the sales page. So our founding membership, which is no longer available, but it was 997 for six months because I wanted also to create this experience that had a beginning, middle and an end. Because again, this is another business lesson for me to you take it or leave it. But I like when it's a new venture, I like to start small. I want to test something. I want to see if it's a right fit for me and it's a right fit for our audience. So me putting this in the 6 month container was a way for me to go. I know That I can pour my heart, my resources, my soul into this. I want to create an extraordinary dream club experience. I don't know if other people will respond like me and my best friend. Do you know what I mean? There were a lot of unknowns. I don't know if I'm answering these questions.
Yeah, we see. I just, I want to, I want to put a really strong emphasis on this.
Yes.
On a mighty network, you can start with a two week challenge. Yes, you can create a mighty network and just set up a two week challenge, charge for it and figure out do people want it. So before you go and think that you have to build out a whole big thing, you can literally just do a two week challenge. And it has a beginning, a middle and an end. And you'll learn more from those two weeks about what is right for you and what is right for those people who are in that transition that you are targeting. See what I did there, by the way?
Yes.
I didn't even bother with like in your niche or your ideal member. I just went directly to transition. So anyways, you did that at your business supermodel scale.
Yes, that's exactly right. And so it was like, that's how we kind of thought through the pricing. That's how we thought through, okay, this is six months. If all of us hate it and it's a flop, that's okay. And honestly, it really is because in business, none of us have a crystal ball to know what will work. But I've been doing this enough that my instincts were like, I think it's a really good bet. And Gina and her team have been on my buns going, and I know they don't blow smoke. These are not humans that blow smokes. They're like, this is a really good idea, let's do it. So we created it and we surpassed our goal and we are having the most gorgeous time. Anytime I log into Dream Club and I see people connecting and the breakthroughs they're happening and the results they're having and the fact that I get to show up there and I get to talk about the things that I'm learning and bringing in folks that are like my OGs and pouring in in ways that I don't have another platform to do that. And so I'll pause there because I don't know if I answered the question. I want to make sure that you did. If there's any other questions that we answer them because I want to make sure we help people.
The. The other thing is, I did a Little tour of Dream Club as a member that we will drop into the Countdown to January challenge.
So you.
You can see that will. Even so, I want to get all of the live goodness here, which is why I'm not doing the tour. We can do that separately. Okay. A great question from asa. How do you maintain momentum and stay focused on new ventures, especially during times of uncertainty or when progress feels slow?
We. We do our strategic planning. It's actually coming up now, next week. So we always have a strategic plan created in October for the following year, and we follow our strategic plan now. Just like we know you make plans. God laughs. Life happens. Right? However, it is really nice to have that roadmap. So that always helps us stay focused. And I'll say this, too, we're constantly checking in between, like, our plan, the reality of budgets, revenue, where things are at, and then making those micro adjustments along the way. Just like any trip, if you were flying in New York to la, your plane's not going to be on track the whole time, but you will get to your destination. It might just not, you know, you got to go around some turbulence or things like that. So I think we are in uncertain times, but I think the thing that you need to bet on is yourself. And the thing that you need to bet on is what never changes in the world, no matter what's happening with technology, is people. People have problems that they want transformed, and people want more than ever to be connected to other real humans. AI is amazing. We're going to see shit that's going to blow our mind. It's already blown our mind. Who knows what's coming down the pike? But what we know, at least for this next period, is that when you bring more of your heart and your humanity into a space, when you connect people with each other. And then Jean and I were talking about this, like, one of the things that I'm excited about exploring in the future is then continuing to amplify what we've built in the digital virtual realm and continuing to bring it into real life for people. And there'll be, you know, more ways.
I want to stress this, and I feel like it's actually the, The. The place to end. Because we've gone. We've gone full circle.
Yes.
Which is. Thinking about content as frameworks for people to go and bring into their lives and to apply alongside other people on the same paths.
Yes.
Where you are stuck or where it feels like it's not quite working. It just means that you got to tweak and, like, tune and get that flight right, what you have. And at this moment, we are at this really fascinating point in the world, especially the world of creators, where it doesn't feel like the thing that is the most valuable, which is creating relationships between people, is something that you can do and charge for, and that instead, it's about creating evergreen content that you put out there. And you charge for the evergreen content because your value is from what you create, not the content that you create, not the relationships that you build. And if, If. If people take one thing away. This is why I got so excited about Dream Club, is that this is an opportunity. And we've. We've seen it in practice. This is an opportunity for people to build relationships. So having a lightweight scaffolding for them to be able to build relationships. But the value that you create as an entrepreneur in 2025 are the relationships that you've sparked. That's how you get people back. That's how you create value. And more and more people are going to want to have intentional communities and intentional memberships that are about being able to more surgically make it through a transition with people who are on the same path. And I just, I'm so grateful for you. But also that point, because it does feel for many, many people like they'd be doing something that feels a lot like email and YouTube in 2000.
Yeah.
Quite ready yet. But it. It came shortly thereafter, and I think you were one of the first people building YouTube videos and YouTube channels.
Oh, yeah. And look, for everyone here, if you're thinking, like, follow what Gina and her team are doing, it's like, this is the future. And I. I remember what the future felt like because I was at the beginning of it way back in the day, and I was really happy to be in there and be early in on it because it's, you know, you get to ride a really great wave, and I think this is the next great wave. And it's like, do not make your life more complicated. Don't cling to the past. Don't feel like more is more is more anywhere in your life. You know that that's not good. It's not true. You probably have your own experience with that, and it's very, very true in business. That is true.
All right, everybody, thank you for joining us. Marie, thank you for taking the time. I am so grateful.
Oh, we're so mighty rocks. Everyone here rocks. Thank you for your time. Thank you for your awesome questions and all.
We, we have seen some goodness in this chat and people helping each other, which also just speaks to what we're building here.
That's right.
And, you know, I look at it and I'm like, I want the, the chat to be its own community in this live stream. And I think we've accomplished that. So if. If you are not following Marie out on the. The interwebs, it is worth it. If you are interested in what we've been talking about with Dream Club.
Go check it out.
Yeah.
And because we'll have a membership open again soon, like, very soon. Yeah.
Stay tuned and thank you again for everybody who is going to the next session. It is going to start in 33 minutes. The link is in the chat. It is going to be Jane's session, Jane on our team, where she is going to all the stuff that Marie has done in Dream Club in terms of setting up monthly themes, setting up a weekly calendar, having daily polls and questions. She is going to show you step by step how to do it. And with that, we will see you in the next session. Thank you so much.
