Easy Blues Lick Guitar Lesson - Finger Dexterity Series Lick #5

A short YouTube guitar lesson by Lauren Bateman teaching an easy blues lick focused on hand/finger dexterity across three strings (E, A, D). The instructor demonstrates the lick, breaks it down note-by-note using fingers 1, 3 and 4 on frets 2, 4 and 5, and repeats the pattern across the three strings with a small bonus on the D string. The clip closes by previewing the next lesson.

Hey, guitar enthusiasts. Lauren Bateman here. Welcome back to the next video in my Hand Dexterity series. We're going to be learning a really cool blues lick here. As soon as you hear it, you're going to be like, oh, yeah, I've heard this before. And we just finished the she bop lick and it's going to be somewhat similar to that. We're going to be changing between three strings on this one. So you can see we're moving up in kind of difficulty as we go here. So we're going to be using the E string, the A string and the D string. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to play this for you very quickly so that you can hear what it's going to sound like. And then we're going to talk about how you play it.
All right, so you just heard it, you've probably recognized it, and now we're going to learn how to play it. So let's go in for a close up on this lick. So the fingers we're going to be focusing on are the first finger, the, the ring finger and the pinky. So fingers one, three and four, we're not going to be using our second finger frets, we're going to be focusing on are going to be the second fret, the fourth fret, and the fifth fret. So the first finger is going to own the second fret, the ring finger is going to own the fourth fret, and the pinky is going to own the fifth fret. As you can see in a lot of these licks, that's what's happening. So we're starting off on the top open string here and we're playing that open. It's going to be open four.
And then we're going to jump down to the A string and we're going to play 2, 4 with our first and third fingers. So the first four notes are open 4, 2, 4. Again open 4, 2, 4. And then what we're going to do, the next four notes we're going to reach with this pinky to the fifth fret. We're going to go five, four, two. Oops, sorry.
Five, four, two.
And then back up to the E string for the fourth fret, which is going to start that section of the lick over again. So if we start from the beginning, it's going to be open 4, 2, 4. That's the first four notes of the lick. And then we're going to go 5, 4, 2 and then 4 on the top string. So all together open 4, 2, 4.
5, 4, 2, 4.
So let's talk about the second section of this lick now, which means we're going to be moving down to the A string and the D string. And it's the same exact pattern. We're just playing it on different strings. So we have open a 4 and then we have 2, 4 on the D string. So again, it's open 4, 2, 4. All right, and then same thing. We're going to stretch with that pinky 5, 4, 2, 2, and then back up to 4 on the A string. So all together.
Open 4, 2, 4, 5, 4, 2, 4.
Again.
Open 4, 2, 4th, 5, 4, 2, four.
Essentially, what we would do is we repeat the first one a couple times and we repeat the second one a couple times. I'm going to throw in a little bonus here for you on the D string. So to round out this whole thing. Usually you'll play over three chords. So I don't have the tab worked out because I just did this kind of impromptu because I wanted to give you the whole thing. But here we got. We're starting on the D string. It's the same pattern. Open, 4, 2, 4. Same four notes.
Open 4, 2, 4, 5, 4, 2, 4. Open 4, 2, 4th, 5, 4, 2, four.
So if you see the top string.
We had open 4, 2, 4, 5, 4, 2, 4.
Then the A.
Open 4, 2, 4, 5th, 4, 2, 4.
Then the D. Open 4, 2, 4.
Five, four, two, four.
So at least you got all three sections. Now, that's a really cool blues lick to kind of get you started as well as getting you moving over three strings. What we're going to do in the Next Lesson video is we're going to do a song by the Beatles that requires a lot of picking. So check out the next lesson in this series.
