Lauren Bateman (creator/uploader) briefly compares playing guitar with fingers versus a pick. She explains the trade-offs: picks give more clarity and attack, while fingerpicking (especially with the flesh of the fingers) may produce less ringing sustain. Her recommendation: do what feels most comfortable but practice the other method too, because using a pick is useful for many songs.
Should you use your fingers or pick? It really depends. I have a lot of students who are like, I hate using the pick. I'm definitely more comfortable using my fingers, and there's nothing wrong with that. You just have to understand the trade offs. Now with the pick, you can get a lot more clarity and attack while finger picking, especially if you're just using the flesh of your fingers. The notes might not ring through as much. So my recommendation is do what you're most comfortable with, but don't not practice the other method, because using a pick is super helpful in playing a lot of songs that you know and love.
