Lauren Bateman discusses releasing a Buffalo Springfield cover on YouTube that she expected to perform poorly based on TubeBuddy’s low search-volume prediction, but which unexpectedly went viral because it matched her audience’s interests (notably a liking for Neil Young and similar artists). She notes that covers of Neil Young and the Eagles tend to do well for her, and that her technique videos are often the ones that go viral.

With songs, it's kind of hit or miss. I did a Buffalo Springfield song because I had a lot of students that were asking for it. And there's different tools you can use. On YouTube. I was using a tool called TubeBuddy. I was looking up like, this video is not going to do well. It's got very little search volume. It's not going to do well. I released the video and it took off. I have no clue why it took off. It was because it really was something my demographic wanted, which I think a lot of people overlook when they're using these tools and stuff. You really have to filter it through your audience because that was something they wanted. I didn't even know they wanted it. Apparently, my audience really likes Neil Young, so I'm going to start doing more Neil Young songs. And whenever you release a Neil Young song, an Eagle song, it tends to do well. But what I found really were the videos that started going viral were the technique videos.
