Lauren Bateman explains how she chose a target audience for her guitar YouTube channel by returning to private lessons and identifying that she enjoyed teaching students over age 50. She deliberately tailored content to older learners by focusing on 1960s–1970s music and simplifying lessons, which she says helped her channel grow and led to her being known as the 'boomer guitar teacher.'

How I came about choosing my audience for my guitar channel was that I went back to teaching private lessons and I was like, who were the people that I loved teaching? And they were always over the age of 50 and they were just so much fun. I couldn't believe these people were paying me money to teach them because I never wanted the lessons to end. We would just laugh all the time. It was very, very high energy teaching for me. So I said, when I start my YouTube channel, what I'm going to do is I'm really going to focus on older learners because we all like the same music. So all the music I'm going to do is going to focus know the 60s and 70s, and I'm going to focus on an older adult and make things easy for them to learn. By doing this, I think it helped my audience grow faster because everyone knew that the content I was making was specifically for them as an older learner. And I kind of became known as the boomer guitar teacher, which I have absolutely no issue with because I absolutely love the students I teach.
