A short, first-person account by Lauren Bateman describing her career before pursuing music: she studied archaeology (Boston University) and then biology, worked as a union construction laborer after college, and later took her first science job at a biotech company performing histology (preparing slides for pathologists).
I wanted to be an archaeologist, and I went to Boston University. I got a degree in archaeology, and I said, maybe I should get a degree in something that's actually useful. So I got a degree in biology, went to school, because that was the thing that you had to do. And then I got out of college and I said, what am I going to do with this degree? Well, I'm going to work construction. And I worked as a union laborer for a few years until I got my first job in science, which was working for a biotech company. And I did histology, which I'd never heard of before, which is you cut slides for pathologists. And they were working on all kinds of medical research, drug research. That's my first path in life, before music.
