A first-person testimonial from a bass student who began self-teaching for about three months, then took lessons at LB Music School. The student reports quick practical improvements (e.g., how to hold the bass, basic techniques), values one-on-one instruction and instructor responsiveness (email questions answered), and recommends weekly lessons over self-teaching for faster, more competent progress.

How long I've been studying the instrument and why I decided to invest money in taking lessons. I was trying to self teach myself how to play the bass for about three months when I realized I wasn't really getting anywhere fast. Go to YouTube and watch some tutorials and they would do something amazing and I couldn't keep up. I just couldn't pop and unlock and all that fun stuff. So I got a lesson here at LB Music School and even in the first lesson had some very helpful pointers on even just how to hold the guitar without stressing out my hand. That was amazing. Just in the first lesson taught me some really basic things and really moved things along. Quickly realized that it was well worth the investment if I wanted to play with competence.
One of the things that I enjoy playing with my instrument is I enjoy listening to music on the radio and being able to pick up the bass lines and understanding what the musician is doing. I also like I could go online and look up the tablature and be able to play along a lot of the cases and at least understand what's going on and learn how to do it. The quality of my instruction is fantastic. It's very good. One on one.
He points out what I need to work on. I can ask him questions, I can email him questions even when there's not a lesson. He's always very good about getting back to me on that.
The investment in my instrument was definitely worth it.
If you really want to learn or if you really want to play an instrument, you need to take lessons. Unless you're some kind of savant and you just look at it and know exactly what's going on, it's much faster just and you'll have a much better time if you just do weekly lessons and have someone coach you and understand the learning process. When it comes to music.
