Hey guitar enthusiast lauren bateman here i got a really cool song we're going to be doing in this guitar lesson called losing my religion by rem let's get into the video.
So there's a couple cool parts in here i mean i'm going to show you ways to do this at more of the beginner level i'm also going to show you ways to spice it up maybe make it a little bit more intermediate and there's also some really cool mandolin parts that i'm going to show you in this as well so there's a little bit of something for everyone in this lesson first let's start with our chords we're to going we have an a minor chord a g chord a c chord a d chord and we do unfortunately have an f chord but if you know one of my f major seven chords that will work just fine i'll put a couple options over here there's a three finger version and there's a four finger version so check those out see which one works best for you but those are the chords we're going to be using for this song fortunately the bar chord only comes in on the bridge section which leaves the verse and choruses as very very simple open chords for you guys including the sol section as well so if you can only play those parts because of the bar chord that's fine you're able to play a lot of this song all right so let's start out with the intro to this song the intro is two f chords two a minor chords a double f a minor g and if you need the chord chart just go over to laurenbatement dot com i'll put a link in the description below you guys can pull that up side by side with this video and and follow along over there so let's start i'm going to start the intro we're going to do an easy strum and the hard er strum okay and then i'm going to show you a really really intricate strum so let's get into it the easy strumming pattern very very simple is going to be one two three and four n that's it and we're just going to play that once for every chord so if we start with our f it's going to.
Be one two three and four and.
Okay that's it very simple the a minor the same thing one two three.
And four m one two three and four m so it's three down down down up down up down down down.
Up down up so let's just play through that intro.
And life is bigger.
So that's when we get into into the burst so so if you want to make this a little bit more interesting you can always do a syncopated strumming pattern which is the down down up up down up the strumming pattern works for lots of songs we'll do the same thing so it would just be one two and and four and.
One two and and four and down down up up down up down.
And then we would get into the verse now i'm going to show you a four measure strumming pattern that i wrote out for this song i listened to the intro now the thing you have to keep in mind is there is a mandolin that is playing over this song so a lot of times it covers up what the guitar is doing but if you really listen you can hear the guitar now this song if i were going to play this and play this live there probably is a lot of improvisation in the strumming pattern but this is kind of what i heard for this intro so let's go over that if you're interested in getting something a little bit more difficult if not just skip over this part use the chapters below and go right into the verse section alright so let's go through this strumming pattern one chord at a time i might do it two chords at a time because each of these tend to run two measures so the first one each one of these is different i know if you go and listen to the song you'll hear it but each one is a little bit different so we've got the f chord and it's going to be one and three and and that's the first half down up down up up okay and then the second half of the f pattern is up up down down up so if i did that whole rhythm got to understand the rhythm before you play it down up down up up up up down down up okay that's the first part of this rhythm.
So it's down up down up up up up down down up and that's.
All on an f chord okay so.
It'S one and three and and and and three four and one more time.
Okay so that is the first strumming pattern i'm going to play it one more time through a little bit slower.
And then we get into our first chord change to our a minor and this one starts very similar one and three and up up up down up down up so there's an extra strum some extra strumming on the end of this so it's one and three and.
And and and three and four and.
So that a minor chord is.
One more time.
So if i play the f and the a minor chord together so this is four measures so far of strumming all right so we've.
I.
Had a little hiccup in the beginning but you you get the the gist of it let me try one more time.
So there you go that's just the first four chords we have four more chords to go so so bear with me and if you guys are interested if you you really want to get into strumming more like this and getting more free and expressive with your strumming go check out my expressive rhythm course it's a really great course on strumming goes over you know palm muting all these other cool things i'll put a link in the description below you guys can go check that out so the f chord now we're back to two measures of f and it starts out pretty much the same as the last one same thing down up down.
Up up up up down down up.
So that's the same and then we do a different ending here and it was hard for me to hear what was happening over the g chord because the singer came in so i just kind of made up what i thought should go there so then the a.
Minor is one two three and four.
And here we're going to switch the g on the up okay so we've.
Got one two three and four and and and three and four and again the a minor one two three and four and and and three and four.
And so we've got f.
All right so i'm going to try and play this thing all the way through again i'm trying to play it exact i would probably improvise my hand when we get to doing rhythms like this really just has a mind of its own but i'm trying to do almost exactly what they're doing on the record here so we go.
And then we jump into our verse hey guys hope you're enjoying this lesson so far don't forget to subscribe and turn your notifications on this way you know when i release more videos just like this one all right so we've gone through the intro which is crazy but the verses is pretty simple we've got a minor twice e minor twice a minor twice e minor twice a minor twice e minor twice and then we have d minor twice and then a double g so what's strumming patterns here you can use any improvised version of what i've already showed you if you want to get really really intricate but you know keep it simple if you want to do the simple strumming pattern one two three.
Bigger than you you me.
It works no matter what you do the thing i want you to pay attention is on the end here when we get to the d minor we're gonna hold that last g chord so it's gonna.
Be one two three and four m set it up.
That'S me in the.
Corner now if you listen to the record you're gonna hear the acoustic guitar picking some notes over that held g chord chord you can do that if you want but i'm just going to tell you here just hold it to get us into the next section of the song which is the chorus and if you want to do intricate strumming you know again i would highly improvise but maybe just pick the first you know two measures of that intro pattern that i showed you and that should work perfectly fine again the chorus is nothing too too crazy i think the intro is the craziest part of this song we have the chorus again lots of a minor e minor lots of a minor e minor a minor e minor so two a minors two e minors two a minors two e minors over and over again and it's just basically a repetition of the verse chords they're just calling it a chorus but it's the same exact progression nothing different where the next change comes is the bridge section of the song so the bridge section we have this f chord that's going to come back in it's going to be two f's two a minors it's basically intro all over again now you don't have to do that big full intro progression what i would probably do is take the second part.
The down up down up up up up down up down up down up down up.
Now you could use that whole four you know that that intro pattern if you want to or again just keep it simple there's nothing really special here except that the bar chord comes into play so if you need to use that f if you're a beginner and you need to use that f major seven chord that's fine.
Stick.
To the easy strumming pattern i know it doesn't sound exactly like the song but it will work now after this we have another verse another bridge and we have a solo section that comes in so the solo the easiest thing to do is just strum the chords hold them for one measure that was.
Just a dream.
So it's c d c d c d c d that is the strumming pattern you can use or the option is you can do the first mandolin section so let's talk about that hey guys hope you're enjoying all these strumming patterns make sure to like this video because that means youtube's gonna show more of the videos to viewers just like you so you can either play the chords over that part or you can do this mandolin part that i'm going to show you right now it sounds like this.
So this part focuses on just the bottom two strings this way we can mimic that high pitched sound of the mandolin and let's first talk about the count i want us to use so the count is going to be one two three one two three four five one two three one two three four five one two three one two three four five one two three one two three four five one two three one two three four five one two three one two three four five now that you understand kind of the timing of the notes before i tell you exactly what i'm doing i just want to talk about our picking a little bit we're going to be using what's called alternate picking down up down up down up down up picking pattern so we're not doing all downs it's not down down down down it's going to be down up.
Down up down up down up down up down up down up down up.
Okay so it's alternate picking that's the best way to play this it's not super fast you probably could do it all as downs but work on your alternate picking here so the first note is going to be on the high e string most of this takes place on that high e string and we're going to do three picks on twelve one two three then we're going to go to the tenth fret with our first finger one two three four five and then slide your first finger back to the eighth fret one two three okay so we have one two three on the twelfth fret one two three four five on the tenth fret one one two three on the eighth fret now we're going to come up to the b string real quick just reach your third finger up to that tenth fret and you're going to do one two three four five alright so twelfth fret one two three tenth fret for five one two three four five eighth fret for three one two three and then ten fret for five one two three four five so here's what it's going to sound like i'll play it slow first and then i'll pick up the pace so we got.
Okay again one two three two three four five one two three one two three four five.
One more time.
All right and then let's this is more probably what it would sound up to speed.
So that's the part you could play over the solo section if you wanted to and then what's going to happen is you're going to jump right back into a chorus section now the last part i want to discuss before i do a little bit of a playthrough for you guys is i want to discuss the outro which is another mandolin part and again we're focusing on the bottom two strings now this again use alternate picking it's basically four measures of twelve all eighth notes one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and so you just stay on that twelfth fret on that e string and you play that until we come to this retard this part where the music slows down and from there we're going to go twelve on the high e ten.
Eight and then ten on the b string so it's twelve ten eight and then ten on the b string back to eight on the e string ten on the b string eight on the b string eight on the e string ten so it's twelve ten eight ten eight ten eight eight ten.
And then you can throw a little vibrato which is you just basically wiggle your string on the very end so we're one.
And two and three and four and.
So now that you know the mandolin parts what i'm going to do is i'm just going to play through really quick go through kind of the intro the verse and a bridge for you guys just so you can hear how this all comes together all right so put my glasses on so that i can see the whole thing i'm not going to sing because sometimes i get hit with copyright but i'm going to start from the intro and you know just listen if you guys want to play through with me go ahead or first time listen and then go back and play through if i'm playing too fast you can always use the settings cog below to slow it down so i'm going to do an intro a verse a chorus and a bridge just so you can hear all the parts and how they come together no mandolin one two three four.
Than you.
Oh no i said.
That'S me in the corner.
Oh no said too much.
Here'S.
The bridge i thought that i heard you laughing.
And then right back into the verse section of the song hey guys make sure to give me a thumbs up on this lesson i really appreciate you guys watching youtube's gonna throw a couple more videos up over there go check those out and i hope to see you guys in another lesson video real soon.
