Short advice from guitar teacher Lauren Bateman for beginners: set realistic expectations (you won't sound like a full-band recording or a multi-guitar live act) and prioritize timing and arranging songs to work as a single performer when learning without a band.

When you're starting to learn to play guitar. I get a lot of students, but it doesn't sound like the song. And it's like, well, you just started learning to play guitar. It's not going to sound like the song, because take the Eagles, for example. You go watch the Eagles live, they got like five guitar players on stage. You are not going to sound like the Eagles, okay? Unless you've got five people backing you up. So you have to keep that in perspective. I think when you're learning online and the tutorials that are important are, they focus on the concepts of timing, which is very, very important to learn in the beginning, and get sound as much of the song as possible. So when I teach online, I always teach from the aspect of being a single performer, because most students don't have a full band at home.
