Stay Guitar Lesson by Lisa Loeb - Capo 6th Fret

Lauren Bateman provides a step-by-step YouTube guitar lesson for Lisa Loeb's song "Stay," demonstrating an intro riff (hybrid picking) and the 16th-note strumming patterns used through the verse, bridge, and transitions. The lesson explains fret positions relative to a capo (video title: capo 6th fret), shows close-ups of finger placement, and walks through chord progressions including A minor 7, G (G/B), C (Cadd9) and occasional C minor color. The instructor also explains timing of chord changes (switching on the upbeat) and offers optional percussive muting techniques.

Hey, guitar enthusiasts, welcome back. Lauren Bateman here and I had a really cool request for a song by Lisa loeb. I'm a total 90s guitar rock chick. Love music like this. Love Lisa Loeb. So this is a song called Stay. And as you can see, we're going to do a little bit of finger picking here. Actually hybrid picking. I have a pick and I'm using my fingers. And we're going to be doing some pretty cool strumming for, for this song as well. So let's get into how we play this song. There's basically two parts. There's going to be the intro and there's going to be the strumming parts before we get into the video. Don't forget to give me a like, put a comment below. And also don't forget to subscribe to the channel. All right, so the first thing we're going to discuss is this actual intro to the song, which actually plays a little bit in the verses as well. So this intro is.
Based off of a lot of hybrid picking. So we're going to be using the actual pick to pick down as well as our fingers. And I'll go in and show you guys on a close up too. But first let me explain what we're going to do. Put the tab up here for you guys, how we're going to go through it. So first we're going to be playing this, I think it's a G chord here.
And we're going to be playing the bottom three strings. So our first fingers gonna be on the second string, third fret. And our third finger is gonna be on the bottom string, fifth fret. It's like a little mini power chord on the bottom two strings and we're gonna pick with our pick. I use the pick for this one. Or you could just do pick and use your two fingers. So you could pick the first one and use your second and third finger to grab the other two strings. Or you can just pick all three. And I think when I played the intro, I just picked all three. Either way, all three picks or pick, pluck, pluck with your fingers. It's all the same. Whatever you want to do. So that is our first chord. The next thing we're going to do is this kind of E minor 7 chord here and we're going to start on the fourth string.
And we're going to play. So basically we've got our first finger on the second fret of the fourth string and our second finger is on the third string or, sorry, third fret. Of the second string. So it's kind of like. So if you're going to make a full like E minor 7, we're just taking the bottom two notes. But we're playing it with our first and second finger, obviously, because we just came from this G. So it's probably easier just to replace this first finger with your second finger and then move your first finger into place on the second fret of the fourth string. And what we're doing here is we're picking the first two notes, so the fourth string and the third string. And then I'm plucking the second string and doing a pull off. So this finger is pulling off and playing the open B string. So I've got pick, pick, pluck to a pull off.
And then I'm grabbing the bottom string with my other finger here. My. What's that? My ring finger. So I've got my G.
First three notes. And then we've got.
That's your second chord. Now our next chord, we're going to jump up here. Think we got like an A minor 7, which you wouldn't strum the whole. I'm on the wrong fret. So this is going to be the fifth fret on the top string. I'm going to use my second finger and my third finger is going to be on the. The fifth fret from the capo on the second string. So I got the fifth fret on the top string, fifth fret on the second string. And there's a reason I'm playing it this way. And you'll see in a couple chords why. And this I'm going to pluck with the pick on the top string, pluck. And then I'm going to pick the third string and second string. So it's pluck.
Pluck. So it's top string, third string, second string. Okay, so that's the first part. It's three notes.
Then we're going to hit that top string again and we're going to slide this note. Hear the slide?
So you're pressing down, you're sliding up to the seventh fret. And we're going to do the same exact thing. Top string, third string, second string. So this bottom finger has also slid. So it is also on the seventh fret. So back here we go from the fifth.
Slide to seven and then same thing, slide to eight.
So we're doing that five, seven, eight. So let's do it again. So we got five, oops.
Slide to seven, slide to eight.
And then what we're going to do we're going to come back up to this third string, get that open G string. And our Pinky's going to reach for the 10th fret on the bottom string here. So we've got fifth fret.
Slide to seven.
Slide to eight.
And Pinky is going to reach for the 10th fret on the bottom string. So let me go in for some close ups here just so that you can see what I'm doing. Okay, here I am trying to do a little bit of a close up for you guys here. See if I can do a split screen. And we're going to start off with that G.
And we're going to. I'm going to pick. I'm going to pick. So we got our first finger on the third fret. Second string, third finger on the bottom string, fifth fret. And I'm going to pick down all three.
That's our first chord. The next one is the E minor seven chord. So you can see my second finger just replaced my first finger. And my first finger came up to the fourth string, second fret. I'm going to pick the top two notes.
And then I'm going to use this second finger here to pluck.
Do a hammer or, sorry, a pull off. And then my ring finger is going to grab.
The bottom D string. So I've got.
I'm sorry, starting on the fourth string.
So that's what we got for that second chord. One more time. Pick, pick, pull off, pluck. Now we're going to go up to the fifth fret. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Second finger on the top string, third finger on the second string, fifth fret. So both of these fingers are on the fifth fret. We're going to pluck or, sorry, I'm going to pick the top note and then pluck the third and second with my middle finger, ring finger. So it's five. Now here comes the slide up to seven. This bottom finger is also in the seventh fret. We're going to slide up again to the eighth fret.
And then we're going to reach with that pinky to the 10th fret. So if I play the whole thing, I've got.
And then we're going to switch.
The next chord. V and V.
And there you have it. That is how we're going to play the intro. It comes in and out of the song multiple times. So pay attention to that. And in the next section we're going to go over the strumming pattern for this song. So the cool thing about this verse section is that it's really just a minor 7.
And G over and over again.
So what are we doing? So we're doing. It's a 16th note strumming pattern and the A minor 7 and the G are splitting a measure. So The A minor 7 does the 1, the A before 2 and the 2. So it's 1, A 2, 1, A 2.
Down, up, down, down, up, down.
That's all the A minor seven is doing.
Down, up, down.
On the and of two, we're going to switch to a G chord. That's why it feels like it's hopping a little bit, because we're switching on the. And instead of a downbeat, we're switching on the upbeat. So this is more of an intermediate, somewhat even advanced song. If you want to take into account the finger picking here and the hybrid picking, very, very different things. And I should also mention on a side note, if you don't want to use a pick, if you just want to finger pick the intro, you can. The hybrid picking makes for a much easier transition when you get into the strumming so that you can get a solid strum. So again, back to the strumming. A minor is down, up, down, three, four.
One, two, three, four. One A, two, three, four, one, one, two, three, four.
Now when we come back to the. And the D is going to get the down.
So 1, A, 2.
And so we're doing down, up, down.
Down, down, up, down, down, down, up, down, down.
One more time.
Down, up, down, down Again. Down, up, down, down.
So that's the timing of the chord change. And then after that we do a lot of strumming and I'll probably improvise a little bit on this because when we get into these 16th note strumming patterns, I tend to improvise. But what I have written down here on my chord chart is E and A four, E and A. So we're not playing anything on three. There's no down on three. So we've just come on. And E and A. So it's down, up, down, up. And then fore, I and A. Fore and A. So the G is going to be down, up, down. Sorry. So we have a minor seven.
Down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up. So that's our G. Down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up.
That's what we're doing on the G. So a minor 7, 1, a 2.
And e and a 4, e and a 1, a 2 and e and A 4. E and a 1, a 2 and E and a 4, e and A 1, A, 2 and E and A. 4, e and A.
And that's the strumming pattern you can use throughout the song. Now, later in this verse section, we are going to go to a C chord and we're just. You can just use that strumming pattern over the C chord. So we've got a minor, a minor 7 to G. And then we have C.
And then C minor.
And then it goes back to. I missed you. Right back to a minor 7G.
So we have that part.
And now I know that I did something wrong.
Cause I missed you.
Yeah, yeah, I missed you.
And you probably heard on my C minor. Just to give it a little flare.
Sometimes I'm releasing the pressure on the chord and I'm getting a little bit of this. Or I'm just. It allows me to mute the strumming a little bit. So I am doing a little bit of that. I'm not going to get into detail in this particular tutorial on how to do that. I do go over this in my guitar course, these kind of percussive rhythm things. But. But just know that the C chord just go the regular strum.
And then it goes to C minor.
And then right back into a minor 7 to G. Okay, so the next part, we're going to go back to the picking. Do that again. She does it one time through. You technically could do it two times through, but I think it's better to jump into strumming. This next kind of intro part, and the way I wrote it out here is an A minor 7.
To a G. B chord to a C.
And if you want it to be brighter, I think if we use like a CAD9, let's do C, add 9. Because it gets that brightness and you hear the brightness in the song. So we're going to do A minor seven.
And we are. Do, do, do, do, do.
Okay, I don't understand if you really care. And I'm just doing down, down, down, up down, down, down, up down, down, down, up down, down, down, down.
So again, that part is a minor 7.
Down, down, down, up.
G slash B.
Down, down, down, up.
So they're splitting a measure. Then we're going to go to the CAD 9.
Down, down, down, up down, down, down, down.
Which if you listen to the song, that sounds like it'll really go well with the song. And then after that we just jump right back in.
So the last part we're going to go over is our kind of like a bridge part. We're going to start with an A minor and we're going to keep doing that.
Down, down.
And it's the part that goes, I.
Thought I'd live forever but now I'm not so sure. You try to tell me that you're clever.
So it's that part. And we're gonna start with A minor and we're gonna do a full measure.
Down, down, down, up, down, down, down, up.
Then to C, add nine.
Down, down, down, up, down, down, down, up.
Then a minor 7 in G B splitting a measure.
Down, down, down, up, down, down, down, up.
And then we're going to add on the C, add nine. And we're going to do down, up.
Down, up, down, down, up, down.
And then after that we go right back into.
The kind of intro lines here. So again, we're starting with a minor 7.
What's the next chord? Sorry?
C at nine.
A minor seven. G, B, C, add nine. And there you go. That is Lisa Loeb's stay. So I hope you guys really enjoyed this lesson video. It's really, really super cool. Thanks for whoever requested it.
