day in the life of a software engineer | holiday productivity | my junior came to visit me in Korea

Transcript of a YouTube vlog by Phil Choi (uploaded Feb 3, 2025) capturing a casual conversation and day-in-the-life walkthrough. The speakers discuss post-holiday adjustment and productivity, family/home life in Seoul, smoking and breaks, music and instruments, community invites (coding meetups/visits), and a hands-on coding session covering backend/mobile architecture and tools (Firebase auth, Docker compose, NATS, Mongo, React Admin, React Query, wrappers/components). Tone is informal and conversational with technical asides.

Past the holidays now, dude. It's like, knocking your brain back into, like. Like, some kind of, like, normal mode. Yeah. After, like, a week of holidays, it's hard, bro. Happy Lunar New Year's. And well, belated. Now it's over. One, two, three. Damn it, I wish I had going. Keep going. Okay, stay. Stay there. Stay there. That is a lot of effort, dude. All right. All right. Later.
You just can't give up. You just have to go.
That's right.
Keep going. You have to keep pushing. It's the passion that keeps you driving forward.
So.
Yeah.
She gave a speech this morning to the group ment. Holy. Yeah. Unplanned. Thank you for that.
I always give my unplanned speeches because, like, I do appreciate you guys, you know? Like, you guys, like, a lot for me, you know, it's like a vice versa.
But it's.
I think that's why we also work each other up.
Yeah.
Yeah, exactly. And I've talked to you before about it. About it. Like, it's nice to have people that are, like, on the same frequency level. I guess you want to get kind of spiritual about it, but, like, push each other, you know, Just progress and progress and progress and progress.
I think parts like that is what makes all the struggle work. Right, Exactly.
That's what makes it work.
Even, like, the holiday mode is, like, different, you know? Like, my kid's not going to daycare. I'm not working as much. No, but honestly, like, our work has no holidays. You know what I mean? Actually, no, I worked a bunch. Yeah, I worked a bunch, but still, like, the regular life cycle of, like, my kid going to daycare and my wife going to work. Not there. So everything was, like, a little bit tougher. You know what I'm saying? No, no, no. For me, for us especially, I think, you know, like, I get, you know, when my kid goes to daycare, I have that time to work and. Yeah, I know. I'm a YouTuber. No. Like, what's this guy? Okay. All right, let's get started. Oh, yeah, I didn't shower yesterday, bro, because I was like, I didn't go to the gym, but I washed my hair, and then some plants fell through. So then I just, like, was giving my kid a shower and I washed my hair, and I was like, okay, I'm gonna go to the gym, and I'll come back and I'll take a shower. But then, like, my kid, you know, he wasn't sleeping early. Yeah. So I didn't go to the gym. So plans changed. You know, so I didn't go to the gym and I ordered some chicken and drank some beer. This I don't know. So.
What'S up?
You're on YouTube. Thought we'd code for a bit today and then we'll go do something fun. Last year was good. Last year was good. You know, we wouldn't have this year without last year. And it's like a lucky year for me because it was like the year of the dragon. It was my 36th year on the planet. Three is a lucky number, you know, and the year of the dragon, dude. And the tarot card reading was like, sick. I'll teach her the fill away. This is the spot right here. This is the famous cigarette spot. Go on, give me one.
And then now we're gonna be like, y' all need to stop smoking. Yeah, I need to stop smoking.
You know, we're gonna get those comments.
Oh, yeah. But you know, like, I feel like cigarettes kind of like help like get your mind going.
So that's like my argument. Like whenever I have to work or like code or something, I always smoke a cigarette before. It helps my cognitive activity.
Yeah.
Like, even for Alzheimer's, they say to chew like nicotine gum and it'll prevent it. My doctor friend told me.
A doctor friend?
My doctor friend, he's like, you know.
Come to the doctor. Yeah, certified.
He's like, my homie. I know he's watching.
He's my cigarette homie.
He smokes a lot of cigarettes. Okay.
Yeah. Especially like whenever one is like maybe stressed or they have like a bunch of things to do, it's like, take a break, smoke, and then you're back at it.
But the one thing about, like, I used to have like a lot of part time jobs when I was younger and it just felt like the. That smoked got breaks and I never got a break. But you know what? And I think that's why I started smoking cigarettes. I was like, I want a break too. I want to break too.
Is this what it takes?
Is this what it takes, like hobbies and they bring you together, you know, like, whether it be boxing or exercising or coding.
Yeah.
And like, definitely, like through coding. I think it's created a community. And we even have Jocelyn coming to Korea, which is awesome. And you know, like, whoever else wants to come, you should come. Just the most expensive thing will probably be the ticket, maybe the stay. But we got you. You know, we'll get some food, get some drinks, we'll have a, we'll have a good time. And you Know, life's all about good times, good booze, good food, good coffee, good moods. Boom.
Yeah, exactly.
You know that's on your Instagram or something. Good mood, good food, good booze equals good mood. I had that same thing on my Instagram, like three years ago. I wrote it like a function in my description, like as a function. Like good mood, like parameters. And then I returned good times or something. This is the baby room, the bedroom, his toys. And he likes trucks.
Huh?
Yeah.
Yeah, I can tell.
This is the view. Nature in the middle of Seoul. It's a laundry room. And this is the. This is where everything happens. But it's really messy right now. Right here. That's the cupcake. Yeah. Yes. This is my desk. It's my wife's desk.
Dang. Your monitor is huge, man.
Yeah. This is the vinyl.
Yeah, it's bigger than what it looks like.
This is the vinyl player we got.
Where's the Mariah Carey?
Right here. Do you remember that Kizak guy? The cmo? You want to hear him sing?
Yes.
Oh, is that a. You have a recording of him? Yeah. Is that him? Yeah. He's good. This is the.
The guitar.
This is the go to guitar. Yeah. He's gonna do a concert now. I'll play you a song. Are you ready?
Let's.
Wait. Wait. I'd rather be working for pain paycheck than waiting to win the lottery. Besides time, I think it's different. I mean, I really think you like me. That's it.
Nice. That was good stuff.
This is called the Halo. This is with Halo Clears.
Okay.
It's really heavy. Yeah. Like the feel.
Yep.
This is an electric. This is like a toper keyboard.
This is like an older one, huh?
No, it's new, but I just.
Oh, it looks old.
The string contains this dollar sign and then the. And then this P. The knights with the lance, respectively.
Only three hours later. Wait, just one more second.
One more. Just one more minus equals on the V night Right index. I don't think I'm doing it correctly. Hello. Oh, hi, Phil. Hey, how are you? Hey, look who's here. We got everyone in the house all here. What's up? Hello. What's up? What's up? How are you guys? Oh, good man. How are you? So I think we gotta start doing some back end stuff. I think, because. Let me handle the mobile side. I'm gonna share my screen. I'm gonna show you the. The back end stuff. Okay. All right. I don't want to show them my failures. The deep seek came out and Destroyed the U. S stock market.
Yeah, yeah.
Deep Seek is a trading company, right? Is it a trading company? I don't know. Yeah, yeah, they did that as a side project. And it's that good. Well, what, like what I heard, I'm using it. This is very good. It shows you how it thinks. So like you can actually know why the AI made the decision it did. So what I heard was they used a bunch of OpenAI's data because ChatGPT can produce a lot of data, so they just scraped all of that data to train their models and that's why it was so fast. Anyways, so I don't know. That's the thing.
We'll find out.
We'll find out. All right. All right, so this is the back end right here. If you guys have not cloned it, clone it. It's. So I'll show you working. Did I make a readme here? Docker compose up minus D nats Mongo Mongo express NPM run dev. I really don't like to hold like passwords and stuff in my database, right? So I like to handle like, like let Firebase handle all that kind of stuff because if there is, if there is a breach in your database and a whole bunch of passwords get leaked, that's like on you. So I just like, I don't like any of that responsibility. So I just like, I handle all authentication with Firebase and then any kind of like backend. Because the one drawback of Firebase really is like cost later on. So as much as the, like, if we just put the authentication inside of Firebase and stuff, the cost will not get too crazy and then we can run our own server and it's a better learning experience. It's a better. It's better too. It's good. So we probably need a create user action. So the way we set that is we do like rest and then post. I'll turn my copilot off for a second post and then slash, we'll say like create user and then we'll say params and then how is our create user going to work? All right, let's check this out for a second. I'm just going to run the let fill social project to mobile so we can kind of connect them. Can you guys research about React admin? I think it is a good resource. If you look at it. They have a CRM, like some help desk stuff. It looks pretty cool. This is a demo of it. React admin comes with a bunch of stuff like email field, text field and then like data grids, text field and all this kind of stuff and I think it should be. And you can hook it into like molecular microservices right here. Yeah, we should use React admin. We can hook it up very easy. You see that? I never knew that. It's fucking sick. Which will hold our configurations there. And then we'll have. We're going to use something called react query so we're going to have something called queries. I'll show you guys how to use it. And then we'll have our repositories which is actually our API calls and then themes. I think that's pretty self explanatory. Hold dark and light mode and then we'll have our utils which will hold like helpers which I always call helpers like helper functions. We'll have our async async storage and we'll have our like other stuff. Let me keep thinking about this. You guys made the login page. Song did. Oh and I put your REACT logger in here too. So I'll explain that in a second. I put your react logger in here inside the utils login screen we call use logger like this with the path and then we have logger dot DEBUG and then you'll see that inside of here it says it'll put the path here so we know exactly where the logs are coming from and what kind of log it is and it'll be helpful later on. Make something called wrappers. Let's call this main wrapper tsx and then this will be import react from react Import view from react native. We don't need the text, we need style sheet probably we need import. What else do we need? We need import Use safe area. Use safe area insets. There you go. I think we're good. Export default function. We're going to call this the main wrapper wrapper and then all right, we're going to make it really easy to use interface. I maintain wrapper there. We're going to put a flex in here. It's going to be a number. We're going to have children array and then we're going to have justify content. We're going to have align items but I think we can just take in view props here. View props and we'll extend view props. That'll be good. And then what other things you need for the wrapper to have? All right, well we'll do now we'll do return. Hold on. What do you mean by the wrapper like each screen. Because like right now you see how it's like I cannot see the input because it's covered, you know, by. So I want to just make this so that we just use this for every screen so it's easy to use so we don't have to use. Use safe area insets on every single screen. So like later on it'll be easy for us to work on. So I'll, I'll. I'll show you that. So padding top, insets top, padding bottom. All right, so like children is just like the, the UI we're sending in. So like I want each of my views to like at least not cover up the top or the bottom. And I want it. And then I just want it to be easy to use. So I'll show you. Because I don't like these really big style tags in my code. So I try to rip them out. So I have like a container and then I, I set like if it's scrollable or not. I have like the, my scroll div style and then I just stick everything inside of there so I don't have to keep reusing. And then in my container I have things like if it's scrollable, if what children I'm sending it, like what if it's using safe area or not. And all this kind of stuff. Also the children is whatever you pass into that component that you just made. Oh, right. Maybe I did not answer that correctly. So the children is the. Yeah, exactly. So I'm using container and all this stuff or all this stuff inside, like header, div and all this kind of stuff is the child. Is the children. Yeah, is the children. Right, okay. And the reason why I put it. Yeah, and I put. The reason why I put in is an array is because you'll notice header and div are on the same spot. Right. You'll see. So if it's just one react node that you type it to, you can only send in one, one element, one parent element inside. But we can accept that it's going to be a couple elements inside. So at the top level. So that's what that is. And I'm going to get rid of this for a second and I'll show you how this one's working. So we have a main wrapper on the signup screen. I'm going to import main wrapper from the components at wrappers and then. Main wrapper, main wrapper. Now if I save this, I should be able to see it more easy. Right? And this is how.
