day in the life of a software engineer | 7+ hour productivity | coding the next best app for SWE's

This YouTube video (Phil Choi, Feb 24, 2025) is a mixed-format 'day in the life' developer vlog featuring informal conversation and a team working session. Phil and Gabe (and other teammates) discuss UI ideas (floating action button vs. middle button), review pull requests, demo React Admin for creating CRUD admin interfaces, and walk through backend setup tasks (Docker, environment files, NPX pod install for iOS). They plan admin endpoints, JWT-based auth, and social logins via Firebase (Google/GitHub/Microsoft; Apple requires developer capabilities). The clip also covers developer workflow items: server health check, role/permissions for admin panels, and task assignments with a Feb 18 design target.

But I might pull you into the back end.
Okay, that's fine.
Because maybe your computer is turning into a jet engine. I'm late, bro. Strange thing is, like, when you're, like, in a rush, you make so many mistakes, bro. This morning I thought I was gonna be late. I was fucking, like, running into all the fucking lights and making them fall over and shit, you know? Do everything at your own time, Dud. Oh, yeah. Let's get started. Dude, he's so heavy, bro. I feel like my muscles are getting, like, huge, bro, because of that, dude. Feel that. Feel that, dude. Holy. Yeah, I did pull ups in the afternoon yesterday. Yeah? Busted out like 15 of them, dude. I haven't even been training in pull ups, bro. You needed that rest, man. So I'm carrying my baby around it. Yeah. I could have done more too. You know what I mean? Yeah.
Yeah.
Damn, dude, this baby's huge. Would I rather have my kid, like, come up and, like, hug me and tell me he, like, loves me, or would I rather. Would I trade that for, like, being able to go out and drink and shit, you know? Really? Like, I've been watching this show, like, called Sky Castle, a Korean drama. I don't think I could ever be, like, one of those, like, dad, bro. You know what I mean? Like, how some people turn into that.
I don't think I can do it.
I feel like they had a kid for themselves. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's like, an accomplishment. Well, it's like, to carry their fucking legacy on, dude. They're all fucking talking about superior genes and shit. Oh, dude, I fucking. Oh, my God. Dude. Dude. I had to tell you what happened on the show last night. Holy shit. Are you hungry? That doesn't get it, bro. I don't think I could ever be part of that kind of society. It's like Game of Thrones. I know these, like, royal families where they have to, like, act like they're. They have to, like, attack people while smiling. They don't really care about money because they all have money, but then they're all fighting for, like, power, so. My name is Phil. I became a senior developer after the age of 30. Like, comment or share on the video really helps out a lot. And if you could comment about a time you felt Imposter syndrome. Let's get through it together. Coding saves lives. Doing good.
How are you guys doing?
Just. Just. I. I miss hanging out with you, Gabe. Me too. Me too. Song is here. Gabe is here. Booty's here. And Jocelyn, this is our team.
The whole Team is here.
This is the team. Yeah, I'll be like. I'll be like a quarterback. XY Split Slim. All right, did everyone get the back end running on the computer by chance? Because if you haven't, this is a good, good chance that we can get that going. I do have a pull request up. Thank you, buddy, for reviewing it and telling me that it sucks. Thank you. Appreciate that. No, because it's a community app and people leave comments on posts and stuff, we're gonna leave the chat up like on the home screen. So it's like an inbox instead of in the tab. It'll encourage people to comment and talk through, like the posts more my opinion. What do you guys think of like a. A button in the middle here to post something? You like that, everyone?
Yeah, that would be nice.
I think you guys have seen it before. Floating action button, kind of like this on the side where you plus it and then it, it pops up a menu and you could be like, hey, I want to post a question or I want to post a community post. What does everybody think? Which one is a better experience? The middle button. You like the middle button? Okay, okay, I got it. So we got to add that. We're going to do some planning, I guess. So this is like a hidden variable or like a variable of dunders or whatever in react native. So it's underscore, underscore, dev, underscore, underscore, and it's just a global variable that react native has to know if it's in the development mode or production mode. Jocelyn, did you push your admin code?
I submitted a pull request request.
Okay, awesome. Let's go over that real quick. I just want to see what pull requests open are on our thing right now. Ooh, what is the. What is the password? Holy shit, dude, this is sick.
That is sick, dude.
It's so powerful, bro. React Admin.
It is. It's clean, bro.
Holy. This is. Dude, React admin if. Dude, that's a real level up skill right there, dude. To be honest, if you guys have not used React admin, this shit's sick, bro.
That's cool. It makes it look easier for one.
I know, dude. It reminds me of Django Molecular always comes in with. Let's see here. My local host 3000, my rest API. This get post, get put, delete is automatically created right in the backend. So let's say I just do the get request like this. It's automatically created when I create a service. So I think the provider takes advantage of that. So, so like users, I overwrote post, I overwrote the create. Like if I try to do the get, it comes in correctly, it has pagination, I can search for something. So somehow we need to be able to get this array right? And like in the back end we have to start making some admin endpoints, right? Like I'll make you an admin service that you can actually log in with and stuff like that. And I'll give you a JWT token. What I need you to do, Jocelyn, is I need you to understand how react admin. I want you to hook up the data provider for molecular and then teach me because I don't understand it right now. Hey, did you finish the input hide text entry thing? No, I thought we were going to go over that together. Okay, okay, let's go over that together after this call. Is it okay? Yeah. All right. And then, Gabe, have you worked on the settings screen or the edit profile screen? And then we have. I. I forgot to do the youth server health check because I was working on the Android stuff. Thank you, buddy. You did this one. Have you done the tab view for home at all?
No, I. I sent you a message asking if we can discuss the details about it, like more. Because I kind of. I want to do it in a way that you wouldn't want to change later. I just want to get it completely right.
I understand. There is no right answer. I'm sorry for that. If that's like how you guys feel, that's my, My, My failure, I guess. But.
No, no, no, no, no, it's fine. It's just you, you teach us the way. Basically, I just want to do it the exact way.
Oh.
I just want to keep best practices pretty much.
Okay. I just, I'm not even saying I have the best practices. I just, I just know how. I know how I do it. But you guys can come up with a better solution and have an argument for why it's better and I'll follow suit. I'm going to send you an environment file, Gabe. Okay. Because you have to get the backend running. I'm going to teach you how to do that real quick. Do you have Docker on your computer? I do.
Wait, so do you want me to open the backend or the.
Well, you. Because you need both of them, right? Oh, I did. Okay.
I have both of them.
Yeah. Okay, cool. Let me just send you the environment file. All right, cool. So I ran the post installed, ran everything. Now can you just check one more thing, please, Gabe? I just Want to see something? Go back to your. The file branch, please. I mean. No, no, no, no. The file. The file tree, you know, like. Yeah, that one. Yeah, yeah, the explorer. I don't know what to call it. All right, can you go if there's. Oh, yeah. Can I see the patches? It's above, above src. Yeah. Okay, cool. I just want to make sure that was there. All right, awesome. And then now you want to run NPX pod, install iOS. I fixed a lot of the Firebase stuff. I think we got a lot of work done this for this month. By February 18th, I'm gonna be. I know I've been saying I'm gonna get a design for a while, but we have to start looking now. So I'm gonna finish that on. On input on hide secure text entry with you right now. And then I'll finish the use server health check. Because honestly, the app shouldn't even even work. Like what I want is when the, when the app opens, right, if the server is not even running, it's going to take you to a screen and say, hey, come back later. Like, Google Login is really low hanging fruit. If we want to get Google Login done, does anyone want to take a crack at it? Honestly, the social networking, social login stuff, a lot of people wonder how to do it, but it's quite easy, especially Google Login because we already have Firebase. And then you'll understand that GitHub login is probably the same. Microsoft Login is obviously the same. But Apple Login is going to be a little bit tricky because we need to go get a, we need to get a developer account to actually make it work in the capabilities. Hey, buddy. Yeah, for you, I might pull you into, if you, if you can keep doing the Android development, that really helps out, but I might pull you into the back end. Okay, that's fine because maybe your, your computer is turning into a jet engine. Okay, I appreciate you guys. I'll talk to you guys soon. Song, stay in here, please. And then this controller, right? Because you have, you're. We're passing this control here, right? Okay, Control, form, props, any control, blah, blah, blah. Right? Control. And then you pass control into this controller, then inside of, let's say, setup screen. Right. You know, everybody thinks an app is just one. One code, you know, one file. I mean, no, like one app. You know, to build a software company, you're gonna need to make the admin panel server, the database. Yeah. The app, the landing page.
Yeah.
The web client, some other admin panels you know, it's not just one admin panel, bro. You need, like, some other admin panels, you know, you need to create roles. Yeah. There's a lot of things you have to kind of think about, you know?
