day in the life of a software engineer | 6 hour productivity | building a social networking app

This is a transcript of a YouTube video by Phil Choi (Feb 7, 2025) blending a personal ‘day-in-the-life’ monologue about habits, consistency, and family with hands-on mobile app development. Phil and a colleague (Speaker B) debug an app (React Native/Android/iOS), discuss build issues (signing, vector icons, pod install), migration to a per-icon package, and localStorage usage. The chunk also includes UX/frontend guidance (enter key behavior, ellipsis handling) and informal team interactions (assigning tasks, referencing team members).

My kid, dude, he's fucking waking up late because we're, like, on holidays. All last week, I think I wanted to, like, sleep in a little bit. So quick how, like, schedules change, you know, like, habits. He was, like, waking up earlier than me, but now I'm waking him up. I don't even know how to wake him up. I just play, like, baby shark really loud. Okay, let's get started. So quick to, like, start a habit. You just got to start and just, like, it has to become normal. Say you want to learn coding. Just wake up and study for an hour and then make it feel like if you don't do it, it's something incomplete. All last week, bro, I didn't do my lifts at all. Feel like a lazy, fat piece of shit, dude. Holy shit. It's cold, dude. But one more month, I think we can withstand it. No. December, January, February, and then we got March. It's gonna start warming up by the end of this month. Oh, Korean summer suck, dude. Holy. That's. I mean, but if you just keep going, like, the same. Yeah. Forever. You go crazy. Yeah. You get results, but you get crazy. You go crazy. Oh, you get crazy. Yeah. Yeah. Like, because you have no change. That's why vacations are important to, like, reset your mind a little bit. But it's just eat, like, so easy to, like, fall into bad habits, too. Does India celebrate Chinese New Year's? Because they're Asian, too, but I put too much salt coffee to Gail, like, what's the most, like, the biggest thing you want to be buy. Dude, you'd rather buy yourself out of debt or buy yourself out of, like, tiredness, like, you know, like, troubles, then buy the new sweatshirt or something. Right. You'd rather have the skill than go drinking. Maybe if you have money and you're in debt or something or, like, you're having a hard time. What's the biggest thing you want to buy? Comfortable life or out of debt. Right. I find myself, like, doing that all the time. I'm like, what would I rather buy, like, a new. New sweatpants or pants or, I don't know, save up for a new computer? Yeah. I hated my life, and I just. I had fun, you know? Yeah. And, like, I really liked hanging out people and mingling and it was, like, a way to have people hang out and not ask them to go out for a beer or something, you know, my. Cut it. Yeah. Do you think about the progression? It's starting to look good, though, now. I know it does, because it's, like, it finally like goes here. Yeah. But like before it wasn't an awkward. It was like here when we first started. Yeah. And it grew. I think if you like watch the first videos, I'm like a lot fatter. Yeah. And I have shorter hair. And then it like it's been progressing and that's like consistency, dude. So my name is Phil. Became a senior developer after the age of 30. If you have any way that you stay consistent, let me know in the comments. Probably drop a video soon about it too. We got a conversation started there like comment share. Really help the algorithm push us out. Just remember, if I can do it, you can do it too. Yo, you got the. Is that a soccer shirt?
Yeah, it's psg.
That's what's up. Oh, let me turn the camera on. How are you doing? Good.
How about you guys?
Good, good. I just trying to fix the Android for like let the lit social thing. Yeah, it's kind of pissing me off but. Oh, I just, I just started so I have to kind of debug the Android part, but the iOS is all working. Can you actually try that real quick? Dude, Is it okay?
Yeah, let me give it a try.
Hold on, let me, Let me just push on the main. So you can actually like get stash things inside of like an array kind of thing and then you can. So it doesn't affect anyone's branches. So it's only stashed in your like storage, local storage I guess, or something like that. You can think about it like that and then later on if you need it back, you can git pop it.
Do I just hit never on this thing? Because this thing keeps popping up every time for me.
I just, I just, I just run X because I just like don't want to. I don't want to like mess with any of the Java files or anything like that because we aren't actually in an Android project. Right. We aren't. You know what I mean? So I, I always just try to like avoid touching like the. This stuff as much as possible. All right, now can you re. Can you press command P and then reopen info plist, please? All right, now. Mpx space pod hyphen. Wait, wait, pod install. Yeah, that one. I don't know why this vector icon is. I might just rip it out because it's been giving us so much trouble. Yeah. But I don't know why it works on my computer. That's like the age old thing like oh, it works on my computer. But I don't know. All right, Now, Jocelyn left yesterday.
Oh.
But it's okay.
Is that a good go away party?
I just had a small little gathering at my house. Can you just try to play it from your. Your X code and then. Yeah, like, build it here? Yeah, but I want to. I'm wondering why it's asking you to sign. Because I have team none and it's building well for me because I'm building on debug mode. Hold on.
Do you have this thing checked up here? This automatically managed signing?
Yeah. That's a good thing to have. Do you have any Asian friends in Florida? Because.
Not that I can think of, no.
Oh. It was Chinese New Year's and it was just. It was like a huge holiday in Korea at least. Just wondering. I remember like, I used to have a friend named like Lizzie, but her mom, for Chinese New Year's she would always give us red envelopes. Like, and it would have like 20 or like $40 in there. It was pretty. It was pretty legit, you know. Hey. Oh, what do you call it?
I don't think I'm on the latest Mac os. Will that be a problem or.
No, I don't think so. It's fine. No. Yeah. What Mac OS are you on?
See?
Yeah, I'm on. What am I on? I'm in Sequoia 151 1.
Sonoma 1461.
You're back. You're. You're. You're in history, bro. This is the worst. Because.
You want me to click on this?
Yes, yes, please. It says. Oh my God. It's still the vector icons thing. Hold on. Yeah, well, I fixed that. Hold on. I thought I fixed it. Cannot find native. I put an RN in front of there and I think it started working one second. Even when you get the job at. Or when you work at Arizona, maybe you can keep working with us too. Like my biggest. Yeah, like, like, you know, like I'll, like, I'll keep helping you no matter what. You know what I mean? Like your lifetime. If you ever need help, like at your job or something, you can just, like, you don't need to like, tell me any, like, obviously anything, like, weird. But you can just be like, hey, how do I do this? And I'll just be like, I don't know, like, let's figure it out together. And then we could let them, like, you know, we'll be on that basis for the rest of our lives, I guess, if. If you want. And. Yeah.
Appreciate it.
Yeah.
Cuz kind of have as many friends, you know.
Yeah.
It's possible in in this whole thing, so.
Yeah. And yeah, that's. You'll be in Korea soon, guaranteed. Yeah. I don't mean to offend you, but in the movie Water Boy, they eat alligators and stuff. Have you ever eaten alligator before? I. No.
Oh, I'm not. I don't know how. I, I do have to try it.
Yeah.
Because like, I, I heard it's good with my dad. There's this like really redneck, like super, you know, Trump bill.
Yeah.
Up north somewhere. I think it's called like Smells Fear or something like that, that every year they have a frog leg festival. Have you ever had frog legs?
No, I, I've seen them, but I, I, Yeah, but I, I heard it tastes like chicken, though. It's good.
Yeah, it tastes like chicken.
It's. Hey, they changed the documentation a little bit. So let me, let me fix that. I'll fix it and let you know. Okay. See, migration, you're migrating from react native to the package. Per icon set approach. We have a next and then a previous. I feel like that's a little bit backwards. But next is going to get the next page and the previous going to get the previous page. So it went backwards like it gave it to you in reverse. I see what happened. So now we have to. If. And at this point we got to say if next we return like this. If not, we do players dot reverse.
Pretty sure the guy at the top for some reason is not there.
But is it correct for the next person?
Yeah, the second person is now the first person.
Okay.
The first person just got cut off, I guess.
Okay, so we're just querying a little bit weird right now, right? Yeah. On the previous. So then what if you press next again?
I think if we had just one, it would fit perfectly because the space is like for one right here. Right.
Okay, so let's just say, hey, I have this guy for trade right now, right? Yeah. Okay, let's do that right now. Or how about you can just trade anyone on the bench.
Yeah, that, that works too.
Yeah, do that.
That way you have five spots trade.
Yeah, I think that's, I think that's cool. Like, that would be easiest because then you don't have to worry about the on field players to be traded. Okay.
Why is it like this?
Oh, because he needs too many. We got to handle that real quick because you know, the description text, it's too long. Right. Because all the, all the positions. So I'm going to give you a function here inside of utilities. Can you make a function called like Handle long string.
In utilities.
Yeah, in utilities. And then like make a folder called like helpers or something. In my code I call it long string ellipsis because that three dots is called ellipsis. So you have an original string and then you set a max length, and then if it's longer than max length, you slice it from the zero index and the max length and then you add dot, dot, dot. So now long string. I'm going to call it handle long string instead. All right, thank you. I'll see you soon.
Yep, thank you. See you then.
Later. That's it. All right. Hey, Minnie. Yeah? Can you tell people to come to the zoom link? Hello? Hey, what's up?
Hello.
How are you?
Happy Monday Sunday.
Happy Monday. Happy, happy Monday. Minnie's here. Yeah, we're all here together. Did Minnie Send over the GitHub repository for you guys to take a look at about local storage? Hey, Mustafa, I missed you last time, bro. Yeah, yeah, sorry about that. Oh, no, no, no need to be sorry. I just, I missed. We missed you. But William, it's good to see you, bro. All right, we're building a, like a soccer building thing and it's a lot bigger than I thought it was because you have to like manage the whole team. You have to put them up for trading block, you have to sign players from the free agent, you have to paginate a bunch of stuff. It's. I thought it was, I thought it was gonna be a lot smaller, but it's getting really big. Line four because it's a get a document, get element by ID and then tasks. What JavaScript is smart enough to know that is your ID is, is available as a variable. Yeah, I commented it out. And then in your index HTML. In your index HTML. Okay, I, I just changed line 13 ID to, to do input because that's basically the same code, right, William? Yeah. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then if you try one more time, everything should work similarly with the enter.
And I don't have a remove yet.
Okay. It looks nice. I, I like, I like to always add the enter because every time in a modern web app like the UX or whatever, they always expect the enter to work on an input. So. Very good. Right, so right now if you wanted some kind of thing like this, you would put like if to do input dot value equals on empty string, you could just say return alert or return alert, input value, please. And then you could just add that guard.
Just like in my browser right now.
Yeah, you can try it in your browser. Like you can do so you can check what is inside a local storage first. So inside of my storage I have username and I have one item in my storage right now, right? So then if I actually said local storage dot remove item at username. Now if I type in local storage there's nothing inside of my storage. So now if I did local storage setitem just say 1 at 1 and then 2 at 2 and then 3 at 3 and then I did local storage I have three items inside of local storage. So right now if I said local storage dot remove item at 1, what what do I expect inside of my local storage after?
Would you use that ternary thing wherever if then else statements like wherever you use that. You could swap those out like a.
Switch case and Right, yeah that's that is true Manny, you could. But there are certain places where an if else is a little bit more readable.
