day in the life of a software engineer | 6 hour productivity | my juniors are leveling up

Transcript of a Phil Choi YouTube video ("day in the life of a software engineer | 6 hour productivity | my juniors are leveling up") capturing an informal team meeting/mentoring session. The speaker demos an app (login/signup screens, animation, bottom-tab navigation), explains technical setup (API client, token refresh logic, React Query integration, query provider), and assigns tasks (shopping-cart features: prevent duplicates, quantity support, clear cart, total cost calc). A signup-screen bug (invalid email still shows a check mark) was reported on GitHub. Logistics: speaker plans an informal session starting ~10:30, a mentee has a free class with Jay at 10 and will join by 11, and pull requests are requested by "tomorrow night" for review on Friday. The recording mixes live coding/demo talk with mentorship coordination and personal anecdotes.

I was. You know, it's getting kind of fun now, right? We have a heart.
Damn.
We got, like. We got.
Look at that, dude.
Look at that animation, dog.
You're such an ad lib.
Look at that, dude.
Hold on, let me get that.
Let me get a shot of that real quick.
Oh, my.
Oh, my God.
Dude, hold up. Oh.
Holy.
That's the dog right there. Right there. Okay.
That's the best place.
They would have to be at. Damn, bro. So much is going on in my life right now. We're almost. We're almost about to be done with the course.
Yep.
Oh, we've been hard at work this month, dude. And every night I've been working, dude.
I know. Less social, baby.
Last night I couldn't even go on a voice chat. I think I told someone I'd go on a voice chat.
Oh, you were.
You were.
I thought you were asleep. You just. You decided to crank it out.
Yeah, that's what's up.
You have any, like, a design networker, like, network from your past?
Maybe? I don't know. We'll see.
Well, we can definitely do five. I'm sure they'll be better than the thumbnails we got.
You got no mask on, dude. You're not sick anymore.
No, I'm not sick.
Me too. A little sick.
I have stuff, but, like, once it comes out, it's done.
Yeah, we gotta do the lesson. I think I'm gonna start at 10:30. You know, whoever. Whoever's free. Just come in. Not, like, start the lesson, but just hang out for like 30 minutes so we can get all the hangout done.
Hang out done?
Yeah. No, so we can end at 1.
That might be a good strategy. Actually, I have.
We.
I have to do free class with Jay, actually.
What time? 10.
Okay, so I'll do that while you do less social. A little bit.
Yeah.
I'll be there by 11.
Damn, bro. But. Shopping cart, you kind of gave for homework.
No, I asked them to, like, try it out, but they didn't have enough time.
And I'll show. I'll do it. You know.
It'S pretty much review of everything we've learned so far.
You know, you have to review anyways.
Exactly.
Even when you code and shit, you gotta review. And honestly, I think that's like. Like with these lessons and shit I'm reviewing, you know, it gives me a chance to build something out, keep my skills sharp.
Something as basic as this.
Yeah, it is. And like, dude, I'm like, looking at my old code recently. I'm like, what the did I do? All the time, dude. Like the react query. I have no clue, bro. Sign in. All right. And then it has like these tabs and everything's ready to get programmed. Yeah. So it's pretty good, I think.
Lit.
Yeah, I like it, dude.
I do, man.
Yeah, I like it a lot, you know. Yeah.
Improvement from the previous versions you've built up.
Yeah. And just set up all these, set up everything, you know, clean, bro. Code is pretty clean. Easy to work with, easy to work with. Pretty good. I don't think I need that. All right. It's pretty cool, you know, I got all the like, stacks and navigation all set up with like the bottom tab inside of here. Yeah, dude, but the code is done. Like, look at this code, bro. Just look at this. Hold on.
The way he said it's like, it's marvelous.
No, I mean look at this, dude. Like, look at this query provider right here. Right.
So clean.
Look at the cure. Look at all this, dude. I don't even remember what I did here, dude. Oh, hello. Does it work? Yeah. How are you? I'm good. How are you? I'm okay. I'm just setting up all the navigation stuff, I guess. How'd you do? How did your project turn out? I was looking up how to add redux. Yeah. But I wasn't sure from looking at your code that you pushed to. Can I help you with that? Yeah. All right. Can you share your screen? Can I show you guys the progress on the app? Is it okay? This is the logout right here. This is like the initial screen. We'll kind of get started. Song and I added this animation and then press get started. Forgot password is finished as well. Good job, everyone. Yes. What?
I put it in issues, but the bug is if you go to your sign up screen right now.
Yes.
Yeah. If you type in the wrong email, type in an invalid email.
Okay.
Yeah, press submit. See if there's a check mark there even though it's invalid.
Okay. Okay. Okay, let's. Did you put in issues in GitHub or inside of Trello? Yeah. Oh, okay.
GitHub.
Okay. Okay. Yeah, we'll. We'll. I'll get that working. But it'll never submit, right? Yeah, well, no, no, no. I don't think it was. Yeah. But thank you. Good looking out also. Yes. So everything's like looking good to program. I got an explore button, I got a search button, I got a profile button. And then what do we need to do now? So I set up all the request stuff. Let me take you guys through that real quick. So here's the server services. This is the API client. I set up all the token stuff last night. And then if like the token gets messed up, it refreshes the token and then re tries to request. I added that one. I added API types. You guys don't really need to touch that. Maybe you guys need to use this. I added the HTTP. HTTP error stuff. I added the query provider, and that's what's wrapping the whole app. With T's query client everywhere, this row is going to be that. Oh, my God. Sorry, One second. All right, and then passing this, and this is going to be that array. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. Just one second. I'm just getting all this set up. String, string, number, number, number. There we go. All right, now everything is set up here. So that's how you set that up. And then right now, if we use get posts, I'll show you the reason why I want to use React query. Let's see on the home screen, right, If I wanted to use this on load, I would do get post from here. And then I would have to import Use effect. Use effect. And then I would have to do something like useeffect Const posts. And then I would have to like, say, get const. Fetch post equals async. And then I would do like const posts like this. And then I would call fetch post down here. All right. And then like this. Hey, okay. All right. All right, guys, later on. All right. Thanks, bro. All right, you guys got the two tasks each? Please put out the pull request. It would be nice if you guys did them by tomorrow night or whatever. So I would have them on Friday and I can review them on Friday and then I can. I can like put. I can message you guys one on one and we can merge them, but I mean, it's not really a hard thing or anything, but it would be nice if I can review them when I can. All right, everybody. All right. Thanks.
Thank you.
All right, Bye, Gabe. Later. My dad doesn't speak any English. I don't know what happened, but I feel. Or he speaks English, but I feel like they had like a Korean agent that like, guided them through it. Elves are my favorite creature, for sure. The mono Green elves deck in, like. I think Urza's Saga was a very good deck. Or maybe it was green weenies or something, but. Or Invasion had really good elves too. Oh, my God. I loved. I loved magic at one point in my life, dude, I. That's all I thought about for a while. Like, my. My childhood in high school, that's all we did. Like, on our lunch break, we'd go up in the library. Yeah. Play magic. Oh, dude, I remember, dude, this. I was like. I think I was playing after school at a library. I still remember this. I don't know, like, why, but, like, I was, like, 11 or 12, and there's this K name. Guy named Sheldon Douglas. I think his name was Sheldon Douglas. He was, like, a bully. He was, like, a bully at my school. And he took my card, and he, like, threw it in the trash. I got, like. I got so sad, and it was like. I don't know. Like, I just remember, like. Like, that happened to me. And then, like, I was like, dude, I don't ever want to, like, get punk like that again. And then, like, I learned how to fight. But, yeah, and then I had a Dell for a long time. And then the first Mac I bought was in 2009, the white Unibody MacBook. And I was trying to. I remember at that time, I didn't know how to code, so I was trying to use GarageBand to become a rapper with Auto Tune and shit. And I could actually do cars push, and I could spread cars to push here like this. And that's probably the way you'll probably see it in real life a lot because you'll probably be adding an array to an array or something. So this will be the same output right here. William Weeks, can you try that out?
I'm gonna go, but.
Okay.
I wanted just to, like, welcome Anne and say hi to her, because she's, like, the second girl, so I'm not the only one. I don't feel so lonely anymore.
But, yeah, this is kind of how a UI kind of looks for a shopping cart, or it's how it's supposed to function. This is pretty much like the to.
Do list, kind of.
It's very much like the to do list, but you have a little bit more. Yeah, a little bit more stuff. But I think it looks cool. But, yeah, please, please, you know, prevent duplicates from being added, because we have the add button, and then so we added the quantity support, and then we can add a clear cart button, which resets everything. And then I want you guys to add the calculation on the bottom for the total cost with the ui. Okay. Okay. All right, I'm gonna turn the. I'm gonna take a screenshot. All right, Ready, set, go. All right, thank you so much, guys. I'll see you guys on Monday. Please get that done and ask the questions. Utilize. Mini. Yeah, and next week, you know, Jocelyn and Gabe. Yeah, yeah, the mentees, they're gonna be answering questions and, you know, is that once the. The 17th or whatever? Yeah, exactly.
Okay.
So you can actually reserve time with them and they'll spend time with you as well. And thank you, guys. I'll talk to you guys on Monday at least. All right, thank you.
Thank you, guys.
Later. Bye.
