day in the life of a software engineer | day off

A vlog-style hike by Phil Choi (day off) where he riffs conversationally about pop culture (Squid Game), the social impact of coding (accessibility, teaching others, 'coding saves lives'), and professional skills—especially communication and teamwork in software development. He draws parallels between hiking and coding as ways to find a flow state, emphasizes mentorship and teaching (helping someone learn to code rather than giving money), and uses a band/drummer metaphor to describe the communicator's role on a team.

We're going to go on a hike. Dude, Ojo Game was so sick. Squid Game? Yeah. Oh, my God. That movie, that show can't wait until season three. They said definitely 2025. I think it's in post production right now. I think Kiyun is gonna become the front man. Yeah, right. I think so too. He's like, showing traits of it. Like, definitely. Yeah. Coding does save life. And, like, I think coding is so, like, accessible. Everyone has the Internet and computer. Anybody with any background can do it. Right, Right. They can come from anywhere, you know, Like, I've even watched a story, like, where a programmer guy in Silicon Valley, like, gets a homeless guy and he's like, hey, do you want this money or you want me to teach you how to code? And I think that would be fucking awesome. Content. Oh, my God, that'd be sick. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. And if you find the guy that chooses the, you know, coding over, like the thousand dollars or whatever. Yeah. You, like, help him, like, 100, like giving them a fish or teaching them how to fish. Right. And I think rather than coding, you know, you can be a good coder with just like, communication. If you can deliver, like, how a message is supposed to be delivered to someone, I think that's like, more powerful, but that, that's like what programming needs. Like, I think you'll need like a whiz. Right. Good programmer. And I mean, if you're a whiz at something, I'm sure you, like, you don't mind getting all this work, you know? Yeah. Someone who's like, good at styling. Right. Front end, a good communicator between them that can take on some tasks and then like, somebody that's like, I don't know, like, overseeing something, but like, like a band, you know, like, everyone has their part. But I think the communicator is probably going to be like, you know, like the drummer. The drummer is going to convey the message, like, hey, we're going to do this time. Timing. We're going to do like, I'm going to keep the rhythm and all this kind of stuff. So if you can do that and just keep everyone moving, I think that's a super powerful skill. Even if your coding skills aren't super great or whatever, you know, we're hiking. Minnie's kind of like making fun of me because I'm breathing a little hard. But, you know, this is my flow state. I can go like this forever. And it's not boring. It's just challenging enough. And I Feel like you can find that in coding a lot where you're, you know, you're at your flow state of just finding challenging enough tests. Oh, crap, this is gonna be hard, dude, because. Because the bench is an array, and you, you know, like, when you're at work and, you know, you're seeing, like, I don't know, like, 11:00am and then all of a sudden, it's like, 10:00pm you know, it's like, oh, what the. I forgot to eat. You know, And I think that happens to a programmer a lot. And it's just about finding the right company and the right manager and the fun tasks to find your flow. Like, even with the mentees, sometimes it's kind of like, where the. Did the time go? Yeah, but, you know, you just use your brain, think about solutions that for problems, you know, ask the right questions, and you're okay two hours later. How does it feel up here, dude? Feels good. I mean, I think we'll be done in, like, another 30 minutes. Just like, hiking. Look over here. You know what? If I only got to the top, the top wouldn't be as, like, great without this struggle, you know? Exactly. So, I mean, I'm sure, like, driving to, like, a viewpoint like this would be fine, you know, but just hiking up, it is something different. It's different. If I can do it, you can do it too. Coding saves lives.
