IMPORTANT The 3 Pillars of Programming | Senior Developer (No CS Degree)

Phil Choi maps a life framework onto programming: speed, skill, and cost. You can only optimize two at once. He shares how he built a strong dev team before layoffs cut it short, and why picking your two matters.

There's a theory there are three pillars of life. The three pillars being spirit, body and mind. But in those three pillars you can only choose two. You can only live 66% of your life at one time or have 66% of the things you need in your life at one time. If you want to have your spirit be fulfilled with your friends, family, partying or your body exercising, eating healthy and mind st studying and working, you only have time for two of those. So if you want to exercise and you want to work, you won't have time for friends. If you have time for friends and you want to work, you won't have time to exercise. These three pillars I find true especially in software development. In software development there are also three pillars. There are speed, skill, cost. If you want fast software with good code, it's going to be expensive. If you want cheap code that's fast, it's going to lack in skill. And it's really a shame because before the layoff we spent 15 months looking and looking for developers and finding a team. And we finally had a team in the end that filled all three pillars of the software development. And it's a real shame because we weren't able to display the full product. Because of the short time that I had with them. I felt like we were building fast. The design was basically done and it wasn't changing. We were moving, we were moving in the right way, but it all ended. I feel like we could have built a number one app. If you want to find your own team filling all the three pillars of code or life, you can join the Discord. The Discord will have a community where you can look for a team. You can get coding help from all different backgrounds. People with computer science degrees, people that have graduated boot camp or self taught or many others. Just know. Try not to be greedy. And you can only have two out of the three things of anything. If you guys can think of something else that have three pillars as well, because I can relate with the three pillars, maybe you can share it in the comments. Just remember, if I can do it, you can do it too. Coding saves lives.
