Attorney Lorena Rivas breaks down a Trump administration rule starting March 23 that blocks commercial drivers with work-authorization permits from renewing their CDLs. Existing licenses stay valid until they expire, but after that, drivers lose their jobs. The move will disrupt supply chains and raise prices, though a lawsuit to stop it is pending.

Something is happening this upcoming Monday, March 23rd, and it's going to affect all of us, even though it technically only affects a small fraction of us. It's going to affect our truck drivers, commercial driver's license individuals who make their occupation delivering goods across the United States. Based on a new rule introduced by the Trump administration, this upcoming Monday, March 23rd, will cause possibly many other truck drivers the inability to continue driving their big trucks. For example, if somebody has a valid driver's license, commercial driver's license, and they obtained it based on a work authorization permit because they have a pending asylum case or they're a refugee or a DACA recipient, a Dreamer, then they're not going to be able to renew it. Now, if they already have a driver's license, it's valid until it expires, but after that, they don't have the ability to continue working. The Trump administration is using and saying that they're changing, making these changes to increase the safety of the public, saying that, you know, these foreign-born drivers are more, you know, prone to having accidents, which is not true. A person's race or nationality has nothing to do how to how well they can drive. Unfortunately, these accidents across happen across the line. But the Trump administration is using this to further choke the ability of immigrants to contribute and work in this community, despite them doing it for years upon years. Now, there is a lawsuit that has been filed to stop this rule from entering effect. We're still waiting on a decision, and we haven't heard back. But in the meantime, these truck drivers are going to be losing a job, these employers are going to be losing valuable employees, and we, the general public are gonna get this effect by increased cost of goods or slower delivery of goods. We wait to hope that changes will happen, but in the meantime, who knows.
