A short talk by Louis Barajas (financial advisor/coach) arguing that teaching children resourcefulness, self-esteem, health, and financial skills during a parent's life is more valuable than simply leaving a large inheritance. He recommends using some wealth now to educate and guide children so they can thrive even if an inheritance is lost. The piece contrasts monetary legacy versus life-skill legacy and urges active parental investment in development.

Welcome back. This is Luis Barajas, your financial life healer. And I'm going to ask you a really important question. If you could have just one one of I'm going to give you a choice here. You can leave your children half a million dollars when you pass away, or you can leave your children with the knowledge that you taught them to be resourceful in their lives. Which do you think would be most important? And so what I'm sharing with you is that recently I have seen people when I've been working with their estate plans, you know, they're more focused on how much money they're going to be leaving instead of taking a step back and seeing, hey, can I use some of that money now that I was going to leave them and help them and guide them to be, to have a higher self esteem, to travel with them, to educate them, to teach them to be resourceful. Whether they lose all the money, they know that they can make it back. Okay. So all I'm saying is that when you're thinking about helping your children, leaving them money or saying, you know, I just want to make money so I can leave my kids better off, that's not going to get them better off unless you use some of that money now to teach them to be happy, resourceful, teach them financial planning tools, teach them how to be healthy. Those are probably, that's probably more important and more impactful in their lives.
