Stop relying on willpower to build wealth. Now, if building wealth depends on willpower, well, you're probably going to lose. Everybody tells you that building wealth takes discipline, and yes, discipline matters. But you know what works even better than discipline? Yep, automating your savings. Because you're human, you're going to have months when you're really motivated and months when you're not. You're going to want a new car, the vacation, the clothes, and sometimes life's just going to happen. So stop making yourself decide every single month whether you're going to save. Now, if your employer offers you a 401 plan, a SIMPLE IRA, 403, 457, sign up. Now contribute a percentage of your paycheck, not just a fixed dollar amount. Why? Well, because when your income goes up, the amount you're saving automatically goes up with it. Now, and do the same thing outside of work. Open up a brokerage account and automatically transfer money into every single month. Maybe it's $25 a month, maybe it's $100 a month, maybe it's $1,000. The amount isn't where the habit starts, the automation is. And if you're just getting started with investing, you don't have to make it complicated. A diversified, low-cost index fund could be a simple place to begin. But before you automate anything, ask yourself one question: what's the money for? Is it to save for a down payment of a house? Is it for your kids? Retirement? Financial independence? Give your money a purpose and then automate the behavior because the best financial system isn't the one that requires you to be disciplined every single day. It's the one that keeps you working on the days when you're not. So don't depend on willpower to build wealth. Build a system that makes building wealth automatic.
