Louis Barajas explains why immigrant entrepreneurs build multimillion-dollar businesses in restaurants, construction, and trucking, then lose them. They skip estate planning, succession plans, and buy-sell agreements that protect the asset when the owner dies or gets sick. Without these safeguards, the business collapses instead of passing to the next generation.

Now there's something about immigrant entrepreneurs that I don't think we talk about enough. Many immigrants didn't start businesses because they dreamed of becoming entrepreneurs. They started businesses because they had to, out of necessity, just like my dad. Nobody would hire them. Maybe they didn't speak English. Maybe they didn't have the right papers. So they did what immigrants have done for generations. They created their own opportunity. They put their heads down. They worked their butts off. They built restaurants, construction companies, landscaping businesses, trucking companies, cleaning companies. And some of these businesses are now worth millions of dollars. But here's the problem. We've learned how to build the businesses. We didn't learn always how to protect them. So what happens if you suddenly can't be here? What happens if you're the owner and you get sick, or if you die, or if your immigration situation changes and you have to leave the country? Who can run the business for you? Who has the legal authority? Who owns it if something happens to you? Can your family sell it? These aren't questions you should answer during an emergency. Talk to an attorney and your financial and tax advisors. Create an estate plan. Have a succession plan. And if you have partners, consider a buy-sell agreement. And most importantly, build a business that can operate without you because you didn't work this hard just to create a job for yourself. You worked this hard to create an asset for your family, and protecting that asset is part of building generational wealth.
