Purpose, Gratitude, and Compassion in a Unequal World

We don't all start from the same place. Luck and privilege matter as much as hard work, and that realization should spark gratitude, not guilt. Real purpose means acting with kindness and compassion, especially toward people whose struggles stay invisible.

If there's something that I've come to understand later in life is this: we're all on the same journey, but we don't all start in the same place. There are people in this world who are struggling not because they didn't work hard, but because they never had access. They weren't born into the right zip code. They didn't grow up surrounded by networks, safety nets, or opportunity. They didn't get the benefit of the doubt from the system. And then there are others, others who worked hard but were also lucky, lucky to be born at a certain time in a certain place, to certain parents, in neighborhoods that open doors instead of closing them. When you really sit with that, the response isn't guilt, it's gratitude. And gratitude carries responsibility. Our purpose in life is not to divide, it's not to win arguments, and it's not to be right. And it's not to defend systems or laws created by people in power to protect themselves and suppress others. Those laws were made by humans, and they can be unmade by humans. Our purpose is much simpler, much harder at the same time. It's to be kind. It's to be loving. It's to recognize that every person you see is carrying a struggle you can't see. When someone tells me, "I like what you say as long as people are legal," I pause because before labels, before borders, before paperwork, we're all souls. We're all human beings trying to survive, provide, and live with dignity. Money, policy, and power without compassion just creates more suffering, but money guided by empathy can reduce it. Now, if you've been given more, your role isn't to judge those with less. Your role is to help make the path a little less steep. That's not weakness, that's purpose.
