Louis Barajas shares his mother's philosophy of stopping age counting after 50 to focus on blessings instead. He created Sin Cuenta workshops for people over 50 to address retirement savings, Social Security timing, healthcare, and wealth transfer using a framework of truth, awareness, responsibility, and courage.
I learned something from my mom. I asked my mom on her birthday when she was like in her mid-70s how she was actually going to be, and she smiled and she said, "Cincuenta." And I said, "Not cincuenta. You're not going to be 50, Mom." And she goes, "No, cincuenta," which means without count, because she told me that after 50, she stopped counting the years and started counting her blessings. And that's always stayed with me because at this stage of life, something shifts. You start realizing that time is real. And for a lot of people, that creates pressure. And I've seen this for decades working with our Latino community. When people feel that kind of pressure, they start making emotional decisions. They take risks they normally wouldn't take. They trust people they shouldn't trust. And unfortunately, that's when people get taken advantage of. So that's why I've created my Sin Cuenta Workshops. Now, these are for people who are 50 and older, and they're there to help you understand and answer questions like, do I really have enough money and will it last when I retire? Or, when should I take Social Security? At age 62, 67, or 70? What happens if I get sick? Who will take care of me? And am I protected? Or, how do I leave what I've built the right way to my kids? And what do I do if life forces me to slow down or stop working? And most importantly, how do you avoid mistakes that come from fear, pressure, and desperation? Now, in these workshops, I focus on what I believe everything in life comes down to, my 4 pillars, which are truth, awareness, responsibility, and courage. Because the truth is, you don't need to panic. You just need a plan. Let me tell you something from experience.
